India’s first Lightest and indigenous Bullet Proof Jacket ‘Bhabha Kavach’ from Ordnance Factory Board gets nod of MHA

India’s Lightest Bullet Proof Jacket ‘Bhabha Kavach’ by Ordnance Factory Board was launched at the International Police Expo 2019. Developed by OFB and MIDHANI this state-of-the-art jacket can withstand 7.62mm hard steel core or bullets fired from an AK-47 rifle, 5.56mm INSAS bullet and even the recently decommissioned 7.65mm bullet of self-loading rifle (SLR).

Govt notifies constitution of National Traders’ Welfare Board

The commerce and industry ministry has notified the constitution of a National Traders’ Welfare Board that will identify ways to improve access to funds for this unorganised sector and suggest measures to simplify acts and rules applicable to traders.

2,0000 more Health and Wellness Centres to become functional by March 2020: Govt

Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has said that around 20 thousand more Health and Wellness Centres under Ayushman Bharat Scheme will become functional by March next year.

  • At present, around 20 thousand such Centres are functional in different parts of the country.
  • He said, the government has set a target of establishing 1.5 lakh such centres across the country by 2022.

One Nation-one Ration Card scheme implemented on pilot basis in four States

In a major boost to national food security, government launched the One Nation-One Ration Card scheme on a pilot basis in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

  • Families who have food security cards can buy subsidized rice and wheat from any ration shop in these states. Their ration cards should be linked with Aadhar Number to avail this service.
  • The Centre is intended to extend the programme to all states by August next year so that the portability of the food security card implemented.

Rural India set to become ODF by October 2

Rural India is poised to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) by 2nd October this year due to the successful implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).

  • The State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched the campaign named as ‘Save Green, Stay Clean’ in Kolkata.

BIS to set up Pashmina testing centre in Leh

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Director General Ms. Surina Rajan said that BIS would set up a Pashmina testing centre in Leh, in partnership with the lab of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh.

  • ‘Drive for Pashmina’ is a Motor bike expedition to create awareness and promote Pashmina.

Arvind Kejriwal announces Delhiites to get free electricity up to 200 units

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that Delhiites will get cheapest electricity in the country. He said, consumers consuming up to 200 units of electricity will not need to pay their power bills.

  • Delhi government will give full subsidy to those consuming up to 200 units of electricity. He said, Delhi government will continue to give 50 percent power subsidy to those consuming 201 to 401 units of electricity.

LG approves free health check-up scheme for Delhi govt employees

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal gave his in-principal approval for a scheme to extend mandatory annual health check-up “free of cost”to Delhi government employees over 40 years of age.

  • The mandatory annual health check-up shall be made part of the employees’ annual performance assessment report to ensure its implementation in letter and spirit, the governor said in a communique.

22nd National Conference on e-Governance to be held in Shillong

The Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG), in association with Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) and the Meghalaya government will organise the 22nd National Conference on e-Governance 2019 on August 8 and 9 in Shillong, Meghalaya.

  • This is the first time the event is being organised in Northeastern region of the country.

Cabinet approves ISRO Technical Liaison Unit at Moscow

Cabinet has given nod to the setting up of ISRO Technical Liaison Unit (ITLU) at Moscow in Russia. The unit will collaborate with Space agencies and industries in Russia and neighbouring countries for mutually synergetic outcomes.

Federal Reserve cuts interest rate for first time since 2008 financial crisis

The Federal Reserve cut down its interest rates — for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis — by a quarter percentage point in an attempt to ward off the possibility of an economic downturn.

  • Interest rates, which affect the cost of borrowing for credit cards and mortgages, are now set to hover between 2 per cent and 2.25 per cent.

Postal dept decides to convert India Post Payments Bank into SFB

The Postal Department said it has decided to convert the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) into a small finance bank (SFB), enabling it to offer small loans to customers.

  • Besides, the department also looks to open one crore accounts for IPPB in 100 days.

CRISIL cuts India’s GDP growth in FY20 to 6.9 pc

Global analytical firm CRISIL sliced its estimate of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth by 20 basis points to 6.9 per cent for the current fiscal 2019-20 following a triangulation of downside risks

Giriraj Prasad Gupta takes over as new CGA

Giriraj Prasad Gupta, a 1983-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer, took over as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) with effect from August 1, 2019.

  • Gupta succeeds Anthony Lianzuala as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA) under the Finance Ministry.

RN Ravi sworn in as Nagaland governor

Former Intelligence Bureau officer RN Ravi was sworn in as the 20th governor of Nagaland. He succeeded Padmanabha Acharya.
