UNESCO & MGIEP jointly organizes TECH 2019 in Visakhapatnam

A three-day TECH (Transforming Education Conference for Humanity) 2019, being organised jointly by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

  • The TECH 2019 focused on unifying the agenda to create ‘Friends of UNESCO MGIEP to promote digital technology in a sustainable way to achieve quality education equitably.

Mumbai-Nagpur corridor to be named after Bal Thackeray

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government decided to name the upcoming Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway (NMSCE) after the Shiv Sena founder-patriarch late Balasaheb Thackeray.

  • The 701-km longhighway, is the longest expressway in India, is an extensive project connecting 10 districts, 26 talukas and 392 villages.

MP govt to host Orchha festival in March, 2020

The three-day Namaste Orchha festival marking the cultural landscape of Madhya Pradesh will be organised by the state government from March 6 to March 8 in Orchha, which won the award for the best heritage city for 2017-18.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik flags off special train for senior citizens

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik flagged off the 1st Baristha Nagarika Tirtha Yatra Train from Balasore in Odisha.

  • The special train is accommodating senior citizens from the northern regions of Odisha to visit Haridwar in Uttar Pradesh

37 th National Symposium of Heads of Police Training Institution in New Delhi

The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) is organizing the 37th National Symposium of Heads of Police Training Institutions at BPR&D Headquarters, New Delhi.

  • The theme of the two day Symposium was ‘Optimal Utilization of Resources – Through Sharing and Networking’.
  • A Directory of Indian Police Training Institutions (DIPTI) was released by the Chief Guest that has information on the resources of around 300 Police training institutions all over the country.

Amazon launches Audible Suno app in India

Amazon-owned Audible has launched the Audible Suno app especially for Indian market. It features content from celebrities like Karan Johar, Tabu, Vidya Balan and Anurag Kashyap among others.Amazon’s Audible Suno is available for free of and it features ad-free content.

IRDAI forms group to study loss prevention

A ten-member working group has been constituted by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to suggest segment-wise ways and means to improve loss prevention and loss minimisation in the general insurance industry.

  • IRDAI Member (Non-Life) T. L. Alamelu will chair the group whose members include National Insurance Academy Director G.Srinivasan; General Insurance Council Secretary General M.Nagaraja Sarma; Insurance Brokers Association of India Vice President S.K.Jain as well as representatives from both public and private general insurers.

US replaces Kuwait as India’s 6th biggest oil supplier; Iraq remains on top

According to data furnished by the oil ministry to parliamentary committee, the United States has surpassed Kuwait to become India’s sixth largest oil supplier as it supplied 70 per cent more crude to the world’s third largest energy consumer during April-September.

  • Iraq continues to be India’s top crude oil supplier, followed by UAE and Nigeria.

Moody’s slashes India’s GDP growth forecast to 5.6% for 2019

Moody’s Investors Service has lowered its 2019 GDP growth forecast for India to 5.6 per cent as slow employment growth weighs on consumption.

  • It expects economic growth to pick up in 2020 and 2021 to 6.6 per cent and 6.7 per cent respectively, but sees the pace of growth remaining lower than past.

World number one Ashleigh Barty named WTA Player of the Year

Australian Ashleigh Barty, whose breakout 2019 campaign included French Open crown and world number one ranking, was named the WTA Player of the Year.

  • Her coach, Craig Tyzzer, was named WTA Coach of the Year and top doubles team honors went to Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic.

Canada’s 19-year-old US Open champion Andreescu was named Newcomer of the Year.

Dwayne Bravo returns from retirement, confirms availability for T20 World Cup 2020

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has returned from the retirement and will be available for selection for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia next year.

  • Bravo, who has played 66 T20Is, announced his retirement from the international cricket in October 2018

Shrikant Madhav Vaidya to be next Indian Oil Corporation Chief

The Public Enterprise Selection Board has shortlisted Shrikant Madhav Vaidya to be the next Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

  • Vaidya is presently the Director (Finance) at Indian Oil. He is slated to take over from Sanjiv Singh, who retires in June 2020.

Former PM Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared Algeria president

Abdelmadjid Tebboune(74), a former Algerian prime minister who served under deposed leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was declared the winner of Algeria’s presidential election as thousands of protesters poured into the centre of the capital, Algiers, to denounce the vote.

Deepika Padukone wins Crystal Award for spreading awareness about mental health

Adding another feather to her hat, Deepika Padukone won the 26th Annual Crystal Award for spreading awareness about the importance of mental health. She is the only Indian actress to feature in Davos 2020 winners list.

  • Apart from Deepika Padukone, artist Theaster Gates and choreographer Jin Xing have also been felicitated with the Annual Crystal Award.


OBITUARIES

India’s first advertising lady Tara Sinha passes away

The advertising industry’s doyenne Tara Sinha passed away. She was 87 years. Ma Sinha, as she was popularly called, started her career in the world of advertising in 1950. With over 50 years of experience, she was also the first woman to set up a national advertising agency, Tara Sinha Associates (TSA), in the 1980s.

  • Since her advertising days, she has been the Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. She also served as the Member, Advisory Council IIT, Delhi and Chairperson, Advertising Sub-Committee, ASSOCHAM.

Telugu Actor and Writer G. Maruti Rao passes away

Renowned Telugu actor and writer Gollapudi Maruti Rao, who enthralled people with his writings and acting for several decades, passed away. He was 80.

  • Rao, who acted in around 250 films in about four decades, he had won the prestigious Nandi Award of the government in undivided Andhra Pradesh way back in 1960s as a writer, among many others.

‘Mind Master’, The Book written by Viswanathan Anand Released

Five-time world champion, Viswanathan Anand has penned a book titled “Mind Master: Winning Lessons from a Champion’s Life”. The book, published by Hachette India. This book is co-authored by sports journalist Susan Ninan.
