Railways launches its first set of solar plants with total capacity of 5 megawatt peak in Delhi

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal launched the railways’ first set of solar plants in Delhi with a total capacity of 5 megawatt peak (MWp), an ambitious project aimed at reducing the national transporter’s carbon footprint.

  • The project is part of the government’s National Solar Mission in which Indian Railways plans to commission 1,000 MWp solar plants across its network. 

UP declares Vrindavan, Barsana as sacred sites, no meat and liquor shops allowed

TheUttar Pradesh government has issued an order notifying Vrindavan and Barsana towns in Mathura district as “pavitra teerth sthals (sacred pilgrimage sites)”. No meat and liquor shops will be allowed in these towns anymore.

11th World Congress on Adolescent Health held in New Delhi

World Congress on Adolescent Health is held by the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH) every four years, with this year’s location being New Delhi, India, and is focused on lowering mortality rates for adolescents. 

  • Theme: Investing in Adolescent Health—the Future is Now. This year’s theme included discussions over mental health and adolescents, gendered approached to adolescent health, opportunities and challenges and more. 

India to host UN wildlife summit in 2020

India will host the next UN global wildlife conservation and international species protection conference in 2020.

  • “India to be the host of the next CMS Conference of the Parties CMSCOP13! Officially announced at the closing CMSCOP12 plenary, in Manila,” the UN for Environment Programme tweeted.

Shipping ministry offers grant to JNPT, Karwar port

The Ministry of Shipping has sanctioned Rs 25 crore to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust for development of coastal berth and another Rs 50 crore to the Karwar port in Karnataka under the flagship Sagarmala project.

India overtakes US to become second largest smartphone market

Cheap handsets and the proliferation of fourth generation, or 4G, services have helped India overtake the US to become the world’s second-largest smartphone market, trailing only China, according to a new report by analyst firm Canalys.

The Philippine Department of National Defense hosted the 11th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Defense Ministers Meeting (ADMM) and 4th ADMM-Plus in Clark Field, Angeles City, Pampanga.

  • The ADMM-Plus is a platform for ASEAN Defense Ministers to engage their counterparts from the Plus countries namely: Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia and Unites States.

Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain

Catalonia‘s regional parliament declared independence from Spain in a disputed vote that is now likely to be declared illegal by Spain’s constitutional court.

World’s first hydrogen tram begins operating in China

The world’s first hybrid electric tram powered by hydrogen fuel cells has started running in China. The tram, which has three carriages with 66 seats, can run for 40 kilometres at a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour after being refilled with 12 kilograms of hydrogen. With water being its only emission, the tram emits no pollutants.

AU Small Bank, SIDBI launch Rs. 200-cr fund for MSMEs

AU Small Finance Bank has tied up with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to launch a Rs. 200-crore fund for providing loans to MSMEs. The programme will fund term loans in the Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 2 crore ticket size.

RIL becomes first Indian company to cross Rs6 trillion market cap

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) became the first Indian company to cross Rs6 trillion market capitalisation after its shares surged over 75% so far this year and hit a fresh lifetime high.

India 2017 becomes most attended U-17 World Cup

The FIFA U-17 World Cup in India became the most attended in the history of the tournament.

  • The total number of spectators who turned up at the six host venues across the country went past the earlier record attendance of 1,230,976 set in the first edition of the tournament in China, 1985.

Jeff Bezos replaces Gates as world’s richest person with $90.6-bn fortune

Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos has overtaken Bill Gates to become the world’s richest person with a net worth of $91.6 billion. Notably, Bezos became the richest person for the first time in July this year but lost the title in just a day.
