ADB Launches $5 Billion Healthy Oceans Action Plan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) launched the Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies for the Asia and Pacific region at the 52nd Annual Meeting of ADB’s Board of Governors in Fiji.

  • The Action Plan for Healthy Oceans and Sustainable Blue Economies will expand financing and technical assistance for ocean health and marine economy projects to $5 billion from 2019 to 2024, including cofinancing from partners.
Japan’s private MOMO-3 rocket reaches outer space for first time
A Japanese aerospace startup funded by a former internet maverick has successfully launched a small rocket into space. Interstellar Technology Inc. says the unmanned MOMO-3 rocket has exceeded 100 kilometers (60 miles) in altitude before falling into the Pacific Ocean.
  • The rocket, about 10 meters (32 feet) long and 50 centimeters (1.5 feet) in diameter, weighs about 1 ton. The rocket is capable of putting payloads into orbit.

Shahid Afridi’s autobiography ‘Game Changer’ released, unveils many secrets

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi’s autobiography titled ‘Game Changer’ was released recently, and in it, he has lashed out explosively at India’s former southpaw and winner of two World titles Gautam Gambhir, taking their decade-old on-and-off-field spat to another level.

  • Shahid Afridi who is fondly addressed as ‘Lala’ has confessed that he was born in 1975 and not 1980 as stated in official records.

Stamm International Boxing Tournament: Gaurav Solanki, Manish Kaushik win Gold

Gaurav Solanki and Manish Kaushik won a gold medal each in the XXXVI Feliks Stamm International Boxing Tournament in Warsaw, Poland and with this win Indian boxers collected a rich haul of two gold, one silver, and three bronze after the conclusion of the tournament.

  • Solanki won his medal in the 52kg category whereas Kaushik won his medal in the 69kg category.


APPOINTMENTS

AAI names acting president to start election process

Archery Association of India named its senior vice president Sunil Sharma as its acting president to start the ball rolling for its polls after the Supreme Court’s order to set aside the national body’s election last year and subsequent resignation of its president.

  • The Supreme Court declared “null and void” the elections conducted last December by the AAI that were monitored by high court-appointed administrator S Y Quraishi, and directed fresh polling within four weeks.

Serbian Dragan Mihailovic appointed Indian men’s volleyball team coach

The Volleyball Federation of India appointed Serbian Dragan Mihailovic as head coach of the men’s national team in a move linked to the long term goal of Olympic Games qualification.

  • The VFI also announced the appointment of Pryemyslaw Gaszyoski and Valadimir Radosevic as the team’s physio trainer and physiotherapist respectively.

Dr Devi Prasad Shetty gets awarded the P.C. Chandra Puraskaar -27th PC Chandra Awards

P.C. Chandra Puraskaar, the annual national award from the P.C. Chandra Group was conferred upon one of India’s most reputed cardiac surgeon and humanitarian Dr Devi Prasad Shetty at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. Swami Suviranandaji Maharaj, the General Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and gave away the award.

  • Dr Devi Prasad Shetty also is known as ‘The Man with Divine Hands’ is a true visionary. He is one of India’s top cardiac surgeon who has an experience of more than 35 years.


OBITUARIES

Noted writer, academician Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao passes away

Prominent writer and academician, Maramraju Satyanarayana Rao passed away at a hospital in Hyderabad following a cardiac arrest. He was 84.

  • Satyanarayana Rao, born at Jayyaram village in Mahabubabad district, had worked as professor of political science and registrar of Ambedkar Open University in Hyderabad. He actively participated in separate Telangana agitation in 1969.

Arakkal Beevi passes away in Kerala

Adiraja Sultana Fathima Muthu Beevi, the head of erstwhile Arakkal royal family, passed away at her residence in Thalassery, Kannur owing to age-related ailments. She was 86.

  • Arakkal was the lone Muslim royal family in Kerala that had once ruled the Cannanore (present Kannur) and southern Lakshadweep.

World Laughter Day

World Laughter Day is celebrated on first Sunday of May every year to spread happiness in the whole world. In 2019, it celebrated on 5 May. It is a day to raise awareness about laughter and its many healing benefits.

  • World Laughter Day was created in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. “HAPPY-DEMIC” was the first World Laughter Day gathering outside India.
