South Korean President Moon Jae-in arrives in India for four-day visit

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has arrived on his first state visit to India during which he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on key issues such as the situation on the Korean peninsula, and ways to boost trade and defence cooperation.

PM Modi to inaugurate Statue of Unity on October 31

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Statue of Unity on October 31, the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

  • The memorial will be inaugurated in Kevadiya near Sardar Sarovar Dam in the tribal-dominated Narmada district, about 190 kilometres from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • The 182-metre tall statue is being built with 25,000 tonnes of iron and 90,000 tonnes of cement.

Government launches ‘technology challenge’ for solutions to end human intervention in cleaning of sewers

With an aim of eliminating human entry into septic tanks and drains for cleaning, the ministry of housing and urban affairs has launched a ‘technology challenge’ seeking suitable solutions from individuals and NGOs.

  • According to the ministry, the initiative is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently expressed desire for a challenge to promote latest technologies to avoid human intervention in cleaning of sewers and septic tanks in the country.

Railways to launch Ramayana Express from November, will link religious sites

The Indian Railways is planning to launch a special train on November 14, along the route taken by Lord Ram in the Hindu epic Ramayana.

  • This 800-seater tourist train, named ‘Sri Ramayana Express’, will start from Delhi and reach Rameswaram in 16 days.
  • It will start from Delhi’s Safdarjung station and make its first halt at Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The train will then cover important religious locations such as Nandigram, Sitamarhi, Janakpur, Varanasi, Prayag, Shringaverpur, Chitrakoot, Nasik, Hampi and Rameshwaram.
  • Tourists who wish to complete the full journey will have an option of taking a flight from Chennai to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
  • In Sri Lanka, tourists will be able to visit Ramboda, Chilaw and Nuwara Elliya.

Gorakhpur launches mobile app to check encephalitis

With encephalitis claiming the lives of hundreds of children every year in eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh, the Gorakhpur administration has launched an android based smart phone application to combat the epidemic.

  • Named ‘Stop JE/AES’, the app lets users seek immediate medical help with the touch of a button.
  • The app, available on Google Play Store, could be used on any smart phone even without internet to ensure that people in remote areas get timely medical aid.

Samsung opens world’s largest mobile factory in Uttar Pradesh

South Korean multinational conglomerate Samsung opened the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing factory in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

  • The facility, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, is spread over 35 acres in Noida’s Sector 81. Built at a cost of ₹5,000 crore, the facility can produce 12 crore mobile phones every year.

Frontline Indian warship INS Trikand reaches Lanka on goodwill visit

India’s latest frontline warship INS Trikand has reached Sri Lanka on a goodwill visit. The Sri Lanka Navy ceremonially welcomed the state-of-the-art warship in accordance with naval traditions.

  • The ship’s crew will play a friendly football match with the Sri Lanka Navy.

RBI cancels licence of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that the licence of Alwar Urban Co-operative Bank in Alwar, Rajasthan has been cancelled as it is not in a position to pay its depositors in full as and when their claims accrue, among other reasons. It also added that the cancellation of the licence is effective from the close of business on July 5.

Dipa Karmakar first Indian to win gold in Gymnastics World Challenge Cup

Dipa Karmakar clinched the gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin, Turkey.

  • The athlete from Tripura, who is returning to action after a lay-off of nearly two years due to an injury, created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to clinch a gold at a global event.

Momota wins Indonesia Open title

Japan’s Kento Momota defeated Danish world No 1 Viktor Axelsen 21-14, 21-9 to win the Indonesia Open badminton tournament, a BWF Tour 1000 event.

Sebastian Vettel wins British GP

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari won the British Grand Prix, strengthening his grip on the overall lead in the Formula One drivers’ standings after beating out Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Finland’s Kimi Raikkoenen (Ferrari), who finished second and third respectively.



OBITUARY

Senior Congress leader M.M. Jacob passes away

Senior Congress leader and former Meghalaya Governor M.M. Jacob has passed away. Jacob, 92, had been suffering from age related illnesses.

  • He was also the Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Water Resources and Home Affairs in the cabinets of former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and P.V. Narashima Rao.
