NATIONAL NEWS

Maneka Gandhi, Ahir Launch Book on Prevention of Crimes Against Children

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi and Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir has jointly launched a handbook titled “Legal Processes for the Police in Respect of Crime Against Children” on ways to prevent crimes against children.

  • The handbook dealing with the safety of children, has been brought out by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
  • It was launched keeping in view the need for preventing child abuse and to ensure congruent capacity building of the police to deal with this growing menace.

Goa Revolution Day Celebrated on June 18

Goa Revolution Day was celebrated on June 18 in the state to pay tributes to the martyrs of the state’s liberation struggle. 

  • On this day in 1946, freedom fighter Dr Ram Manohar Lohia gave a clarion call to the people of the state to unite and fight against the Portuguese colonial regime.
  • The revolutionary call provided a spark to Goa’s freedom struggle and the state was finally liberated on 19th December, 1961.

Committee to examine using MNREGA in agriculture

The Central government is mulling to link MNREGA with the agriculture sector in a way that the rural employment scheme and the demands of labour in agriculture complement each other.

  • To examine the feasibility of the idea the government has formed a seven-member committee of the Chief Ministers that will also suggest the way to implement it.
  • The committee would examine the feasibility of using the employment generated under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in agriculture related activities both pre-harvest and post-harvest.
  • The committee, headed by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and comprising his counterparts Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), Vijay Rupani (Gujarat), Nitish Kumar (Bihar), Yogi Adityanath (Uttar Pradesh), N. Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) and Pawan Chamling (Sikkim).
  • Under MNREGA, the Central government has to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed employment involving unskilled manual work in a financial year to every household in rural areas as per demand.

11th Common Review Mission Report Released

Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare released the 11th Common Review Mission (CRM) report of the National Health Mission.

  • According to the report, India has registered a record 22% reduction in MMR since 2013, which is the highest percentage decline so far when compared to all the previous reductions in Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) as per the earlier rounds of Sample Registration Scheme (SRS).
  • Maternal Mortality Ratio of India has declined from 167 in 2011-2013 to 130 in 2014-2016.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

US pips India as top greenfield FDI investment destination: Report 

The United States has surpassed India to become the top destination for greenfield FDI investment in 2017, according to FDI Report 2018 compiled by FDI Intelligence, a division of The Financial Times Ltd.

  • As per the FDI report, the number of greenfield FDI projects in India during the year fell sharply by 21 percent to 637.
  • India had maintained the numero uno slot in greenfield FDI investment in 2015 and 2016. However, in 2017, the US reclaimed the spot from India, recording USD 87.4 billion of announced Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
  • In the Asia and Pacific region, China was on top in terms of FDI in total number of new projects and capital investment, followed by India.
  • China received foreign capital investment of USD 50.8 billion in 2017 in greenfield projects, compared to India’s USD 25.1 billion.

Greece, Macedonia Sign Pact to Change Country’s Name

Greece and Macedonia has signed an agreement to change Macedonia’s name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia, setting aside 27-year-old dispute over the latter’s name.

  • This new name for the Balkan state will pave the way for Macedonia’s admission to the European Union and NATO.

  • The foreign minister of Greece Nikos Kotzias and his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Dimitrov signed an accord to rename the former Yugoslav republic despite of protests on both sides over a deal seen as a national sellout.
  • Since 1991, both the countries have been in dispute over the former Yugoslav republic’s name, arguing it could imply territorial claims over the Greek province of Macedonia, ancient Greek culture and its civilization.

WHO classifies ‘gaming disorder’ as mental health condition

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now included “gaming disorder” as a mental health condition in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

  • The ICD, a diagnostic manual published by the WHO, was last updated in 1990 and its new edition, ICD-11, has included gaming disorder as a serious health condition that needs to be monitored.
  • Gaming disorder has been added to the section on addictive disorders in ICD-11.

International ICT conference concludes in Nepal

The two-day international Information and Communication Technology (ICT) 2018 conference concluded in Nepal on June 18.

  • The event was organised by the Federation of Computer Association Nepal under the theme “Sustainable Development Goals for Smart Society”.

Ratan Tata launches North East Small Finance bank

Tata Trusts Chairman Ratan Tata and Assam’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the first 28 branches of the North East Small Finance Bank (NESFB) marking the region’s first small bank.

  • The Tata Trusts Chairman, through the investment arm RNT Associates, has invested Rs 40 crore in the bank.
  • RGVN (North East) Microfinance Ltd got the Reserve Bank of India’s Small Finance Bank license on March 31, 2017 mandating it to carry out banking services in remote and “unbanked” areas of the eight states of northeast India, as well as in West Bengal and registered a public limited company by the name of North East Small Finance Bank Ltd.

Bangladesh appoints General Aziz Ahmed as army chief

Bangladesh has appointed Lieutenant General Aziz Ahmed as the country’s new army chief for a three-year tenure. 

  • He would succeed General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Haque, who is set to retire on June 25.
  • Ahmed previously served as the Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) from 2012 to November, 2016.
  • Besides, Air Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat has taken over as the country’s air force chief.

Ivan Duque Wins Election to Become Colombia’s President

Conservative Ivan Duque has been elected as the new President of Colombia.

  • Duque, 41, polled just over 54 percent to his leftist rival Gustavo Petro’s 41.7 percent with nearly 97 percent of the vote counted.
  • Duque, who will turn 42 just before taking office on 8 August will be Colombia’s youngest ever president, though his party, Democratic Center, has a coalition in Congress.

ICICI Bank appoints Sandeep Bakhshi as COO

Private sector banking major ICICI Bank has appointed Sandeep Bakhshi as the new Wholetime Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

  • Bakhshi’s appointment as COO will be for a period of five years, subject to regulatory approvals. He will take over as the COO from June 19 or on the date of regulatory and other approvals, whichever is later.
  • Sandeep will be responsible for handling all the businesses and corporate centre functions at the bank and will report to Kochhar.
  • A Mechanical Engineer and a post-graduate in management, Bakhshi was earlier the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company, since August 2010.

Inter-Governmental Ministerial meeting on anti-doping begins in Colombo

The annual Asia and Oceania Region Inter-Governmental Ministerial meeting on anti-doping began in Colombo on June 18 with representatives from 29 countries including India.

  • The 15th such annual gathering is also being attended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to discuss important anti-doping issues that will help in the fight for clean sport.

  • The two-day meeting will discuss how to make the most of government engagement, ensure compliance with the world anti-doping code, support capacity building and a range of other topics.

All India Senior Tournament: Shuttlers Sourabh, Uttejitha emerge winners

2016 Chinese Taipei Masters winner Sourabh Verma registered a stunning comeback victory over top seeded Pratul Joshi to win men’s single competition in the All India Senior Ranking Tournament.

US Open: Brooks Koepka wins for 2nd straight year

Brooks Koepka won the U.S. Open Golf title 2018 for the second straight year, becoming the sixth player in the tournament’s history to win back-to-back titles. The last player to do it was Curtis Strange in 1989.

  • The 28-year-old Florida native emerged victorious by one shot over England’s Tommy Fleetwood. 
  • The World number one Dustin Johnson finished third.

Federer wins 98th ATP title in Stuttgart ahead of return to No 1

Roger Federer claimed his 98th ATP title and re-established his unrivalled superiority on grass with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) victory over Milos Raonic in the Stuttgart Cup final.

 

  • The top-seeded Swiss beat his Canadian opponent for the 11th time in 14 meetings while winning a first Stuttgart title.


SPACE & TECHNOLOGY

World’s most powerful supercomputer unveiled

US scientists have unveiled the world’s most powerful and smartest scientific supercomputer called Summit that can complete over 200,000 trillion calculations per second.

  • The supercomputer  will be eight times more powerful than its previous top-ranked system, Titan – providing unprecedented computing power for research in energy, advanced materials and artificial intelligence (AI).

WhatsApp Introduced payments service in India

WhatsApp has introduced beta testing of WhatsApp’s payments service in India. Almost one million people are “testing” the service over last few months.

  • The company is also working with the government, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and banks to expand the service to more users.
  • WhatsApp had earlier taken permission from the NPCI to tie up with banks to facilitate financial transactions via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Facebook partners with NCW for digital literacy for women

Facebook has announced its partnership with the National Commission for Women (NCW) to conduct a digital literacy programme aimed at training women scholars in Panjab University.

  • Launched in collaboration with Cyber Peace Foundation, the programme will enable women scholars to learn using online resources, protect themselves and promote digital literacy to reap the benefits of the internet.

Russia successfully launched Glonass- M positioning satellite

Russia successfully launched a new navigation satellite, Glonass-M positioning satellite, using a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket.

  • The Glonass-M navigation craft, built by ISS Reshetnev in Zheleznogorsk, Russia, lifted off from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome space center in northern Russia.
  • The Glonass network provides real-time positioning data for surface, sea and airborne objects around the globe, at an accuracy reportedly on par with the U.S. Global Positioning System.
  • With this there are now 26 Glonass satellites in orbit.
