Railways’ operating ratio worst in last 10 years: CAG

The CAG report titled ‘Railways Finances’, says the Railways recorded an operating ratio of 98.44% in 2017-18 which is the worst in the previous 10 years.

  • An operating ratio of 98.44% means that the Railways spent Rs.98.44 to earn Rs.100.
  • The net revenue surplus decreased by 66.10 per cent from ₹4,913.00 crore in 2016-17 to ₹1,665.61 crore in 2017-18.
  • The share of internal resources in total capital expenditure also decreased to 3.01% in 2017-18.

Andhra CM launches Post-Operative Sustenance Allowance for patients

Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy launched Dr YSR Aarogyasri Aasara scheme at the Guntur General Hospital in Guntur.

  • The main aim of the scheme is providing Post-Operative Sustenance allowance of Rs 225 per day or Rs 5000 per month during the recuperative period after treatment
  • New Arograsri cards will be issued to those having an annual income less than Rs 5 lakhs. Patient’s medical report will be included in the card that can be accessed through QR code.

Indigenous Faith Day celebrated in Arunachal Pradesh

The Indigenous Faith Day was celebrated on December 1 throughout Arunachal Pradesh with day-long programme. The IFCSAP calendar was also launched in the event.

  • The event was organised at Zomkhang hall Tawang, whichwas graced by Venerable Dr Rikya Lhavoi Rinpoche and Padmashree Ven Lama Thupten Phuntsok, the founding Director of Manjushree Vidyapeeth.

20th Edition of Hornbill Festival begins in Nagaland

The 10 Days Hornbill Festival began with a colourful blend of culture and tradition with a modern twist at Naga Heritage Kisama in Nagaland. This is the 20th edition of Hornbill Festival.

  • The festival organised by Nagaland Government is an annual tourism promotional event to showcase the state’s traditional and rich cultural heritage in all its ethnicity, diversity and grandeur.

Regional Conference on Ek Bharat-Shresht Bharat focusing on Jal Shakti, Disaster Management concludes

The two-day Regional Conference on ‘Ek Bharat Shreshta Bharat’ focusing on ‘Jal Shakti’ and ‘Disaster Management’ concluded with adoption of Sahyog-Sankalp resolution in Jammu.

  • During the two-day conference, six technical sessions were held on wide ranging issues viz., Rejuvenation of Rivers- Cauvery and Jhelum, Reducing Water Consumption in Agriculture, Water Warriors Discussion, Urban flooding, NDRF Rescue operations – 2014 Srinagar floods and 2015 Chennai floods.

India, Japan hold first ‘two-plus-two’ dialogue in New Delhi

India and Japan held their inaugural foreign and defence ministerial dialogue held in New Delhi with an aim to give further momentum to their special strategic partnership, particularly in the maritime domain.

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation while the Japanese side was headed by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Minister of Defence Taro Kono
  • The two leaders decided to institute the new mechanism for further deepening bilateral security and defence cooperation and bring greater depth to the special strategic and global partnership between the two countries.

Global Migration Film Festival organised in Dhaka

The day-long festival ‘Global Migration Film Festival (GMFF)’ was organised in Dhaka, Bangladesh which will be screened ovrer 15 films on the theme of migration and its various aspects.This year it is being organised across many cities in the world between 28 November to 18 December 2019.

IFC to anchor $200 million investment in Mahindra Finance to boost MSME lending

International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, has anchored an investment round of 200 million dollars (about Rs 1,430 crore) in Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services Ltd to create a dedicated pool of financing for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in low-income states

  • IFC has invested 75 million dollars (about Rs 536 crore) from its own account and is mobilising another 125 million dollars (about Rs 894 crore) as parallel loans.

Net surplus revenue decreased by 66.10 pc to Rs 1,665.61 cr in 2017-18: CAG

India’s net revenue surplus decreased by 66.10 per cent from Rs 4,913.00 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 1,665.61 crore in 2017-18, said the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG)

  • The share of internal resources in total capital expenditure also decreased to 3.01 per cent in 2017-18

BCCI bans U19 cricketer Prince Yadav for age fraud

Delhi cricketer Prince Ram Niwas Yadav was disqualified and banned 2 years for age fraud by the Board of Control of Cricket in India’s (BCCI).

  • Due to the ban, the player will not be able to play in any 2020-21 and 2021-22 BCCI’s domestic cricket tournaments. He will only be allowed to participate in senior Men’s Cricket tournaments.

Senior Wrestling National C’ships: Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik clinch gold

Star wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik defated Haryana’s Anju 7-3 in the 55kg category and Radhika of Haryana 4-2 in the 62kg category in the finals to claim gold medals at the Senior Wrestling National Championships in Jalandhar, Punjab.

  • Gursharan defeated Pooja of Haryana 4-2 in the 76 Kg category to win the gold medal.
  • In the 50kg category, Meerut’s Sheetal Tomar dominated Nirmala to post a 7-3 win.
  • Haryana’s women wrestlers dominated the medals tally with total of 215 points.

Khelo India Youth Games: Mascot, jersey unveiled in Guwahati

The third edition of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 Logo was launched in Guwahati by Assam Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal in the presence of Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports. The Mascot, Jersey and Theme song of the event were also launched at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai.

  • The 3rd edition of Khelo India Youth Games will start from 10 January 2020 and continue till 22 January. Pune hosted the 2nd edition in 2019.

Hari Mohan takes over as Chairman, Ordnance Factory Board

A 1982-batch Indian Ordnance Factories’ Service (I.O.F.S.) officer, Mr Hari Mohan has taken over the charge as Chairman, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) w.e.f. December 01, 2019 from Mr Saurabh Kumar who superannuated from the services.

  • Mohan has contributed significantly in various positions in Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Hardwar, Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, Engine Factory Avadi, Heavy Vehicle Factory Avadi, Ammunition Factory Khadki, Ordnance Factory Bolangir, Ordnance Factory Chanda, Ordnance Factory Dehu Road, OFB New Delhi Office and Ministry of Steel & Mines.

Masatsugu Asakawa elected as ADB president

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that Masatsugu Asakawa has appointed as its 10th president. He will succeed Takehiko Nakao, who will leave office on January 16, 2020.

  • Asakawa, 61, currently special advisor to Japan’s Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, will assume office as ADB’s 10th President on January 17, 2020.

Tony Joseph’s ‘Early Indians’ Wins 2019 Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize

English author Tony Joseph has won the 12th ‘Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize’ for his 2018 book, Early Indians: The Story of Our Ancestors and Where We Came From, the Shakti Bhatt Foundation.

  • It was Instituted in 2008, the award carries a cash prize of Rs.2 lakh and a trophy.

Veteran Hollywood actress Shelley Morrison passes away

Veteran Hollywood actress with a 50-year career, Shelley Morrison passed away from heart failure after a brief illness. She was 83 year old.

  • Morrison played Rosario Salazar, a maid from El Salvador, in the original run of “Will & Grace” from 1999 to 2006, becoming part of a cast that won a Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble in a comedy series.

Ex-Maharashtra minister Tukaram Dighole passed away

Former Maharashtra minister Tukaram Dighole passed away after a brief illness. He was 77.

Freedom fighter, former MP Laxminarayan Nayak passes away

Laxminarayan Nayak, centenarian freedom fighter and former MP passed away  due to age-related illness. He was 101.

Noted Odisha theatre artist Paramananda Sahu passes away

Prominent theatre artist of Odisha, Paramananda Sahu passed away due to old age-related illness.He was 72.

  • Sahu had directed and acted in more than a hundred dramas, besides being an artist in All India Radio and Doordarshan.He had also acted in several Odia and Bengali soaps and received several awards.

National Pollution Control Day

Every year December 2 is observed as National Pollution Control Day to raise awareness about the problem caused by increasing pollution. The day is observed remembering the innocent lives that were lost in the Bhopal gas tragedy that occurred on this day in 1984.

  • · The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, on 2nd December announced, that a project worth of Rs 50,000 Cr, to decongest Delhi’s traffic is underway. Three students from IIT Delhi launched their product named as ‘Pollution Net’ on the occasion of National Pollution Control Day.
