Two-day National Education Ministers’ Conference begins in Gujarat 
The two-day National Education Ministers’ Conference begins in Gandhinagar Gujarat. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated this conference which is being participated by other Union Ministers and Education Ministers of States and Union Territories.

  • The conference is expected to witness deliberations on strengthening the education ecosystem in the country with focus on implementation of National Education Policy 2020, skilling in schools and digital initiatives like NDEAR, NETF.

Jan Aushadhi outlets cross Rs 100 crore revenue mark in May
Jan Aushadhi outlets for the first time crossed the Rs 100 crore sales mark in May, an official release said.Jan Aushadhi outlets offer more than 1,600 generic medicines, 250 surgical devices, nutraceuticals, Ayush products and Suvidha Sanitary pads.

  • Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) is the implementing agency of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
  • With a vision to provide quality medicines at affordable rates to the common man especially the poor, the goverment has set a target to increase the number of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) to 10,000 by March 2024.
  • There are 8,735 such stores across 739 districts in the country, at present.

Supreme Court recognises sex work as a ‘profession’
I’m  a significant order recognising sex work as a “profession” whose practitioners are entitled to dignity and equal protection under law, the Supreme Court has directed that police should neither interfere nor take criminal action against adult and consenting sex workers.

  • It need not be gainsaid that notwithstanding the profession, every individual in this country has a right to a dignified life under Article 21 of the Constitution,” the court observed.

Govt. reconstitutes Central Advisory Board on Archaeology
The Central Advisory Board on Archaeology (CABA), which was formed seven years ago to promote ties between the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and people working in the field of archaeological research, was re-established.

  • The ASI reconstituted the board, with the Culture Minister as chairperson and members including officials from the Culture Ministry and ASI, MPs, State government nominations, university representatives, scientists, and Indus Valley script experts.
  • It was reconstituted for a three-year term to promote closer contacts between the Archaeological Survey of India and Indian universities conducting archaeological research and other institutions conducting studies related to the application of archaeological principles, as well as to provide for a closer association of learned societies in India with the ASI’s activities.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Bangladesh top recipient of Covid vaccines under COVAX
Bangladesh remains the top recipient of COVID 19 vaccines under the COVAX facility to date, says UNICEF.

  • It has received over 190 million doses of COVID 19 vaccines through the COVAX facility which is a global initiative co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and the World Health Organisation, with UNICEF as a key delivery partner. COVAX accounts for over 62 percent of doses received by Bangladesh.
  • Bangladesh with 69 per cent fully vaccinated population is close to achieving the global benchmark of 70 per cent fully vaccinated population by June 2022. A COVID-19 booster dose campaign is planned for June.


BANKING & FINANCE

World Bank to Disburse USD 700 Million to Crisis-hit Sri Lanka: Report
The World Bank is planning to disburse USD 700 million to crisis-ridden Sri Lanka by re-purposing its existing loans, a move that will help the island nation grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis much-needed breathing space till a bailout package with the IMF is worked out, media reports said.

  • Sri Lanka is nearing bankruptcy and has severe shortages of essentials from food, fuel, medicines and cooking gas. For months, citizens have been forced to stay in long lines to buy the limited stocks.

Tata Aia Life Debuts Industry-first Smart Value Income Plan
Tata AIA Life Insurance Company Limited (Tata AIA Life), a joint venture company established by Tata Sons Pvt. Ltd. and AIA Group Ltd. (AIA), has launched a ‘Smart Value Income Plan’, a non-linked, participating life insurance savings plan where the bonus can be adjusted against premium payments.

  • This plan includes first-in-industry features such as the option to accumulate cash bonuses which will earn rewards in the form of loyalty bonuses in the sub wallet and favourable interest rates on loans for MSMEs and women entrepreneurs, as well as an additional 1% concession on loan facilities for women entrepreneurs. Individuals between the age group of 1 and 65 can buy the Smart Value Income Plan, with a maximum maturity age of 100 years.The policyholder may also be eligible for tax advantages under Sections 80 C and 10 (10 D) of the Income Tax Act of 1961.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh top in GST registrations 
Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have topped in Goods and Services Tax (GST) registrations by businesses and dealers followed by Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, reflecting that economic prowess of these states.

  • Official data from government on aggregate GST registrations in the 2017-22 period showed that Maharashtra has 1.48 million normal GST payers who pay taxes on a monthly basis, while Uttar Pradesh has 1.33 million such tax payers.
  • Gujarat has 1.09 million normal and composition tax payers, while Tamil Nadu has 1.06 million GST registrations. Businesses having operations in different states are required to take registrations in each of the states where they operate. Karnataka has over 953,000 GST registrations, while Rajasthan has over 795,000 GST registrations. Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands have fewer than 10,000 GST registrations.

Sebi rejigs risk management review committee 
Capital markets regulator SEBI has restructured its committee, which reviews the risk management framework for the cash and derivatives, including commodity derivatives.

  • The 14-member committee will be headed by IIM Ahmedabad Professor JR Varma, an update with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) showed.
  • The committee has been entrusted with the task of recommending changes if required in the margin system, consider and suggest measures in reducing transmission of risk from other segments and review the investor protection measure in the stock exchanges related to risk management.

Tata Motors Inks Pact For Potential Acquisition Of Ford India’s Plant In Gujarat’s Sanand
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML), a subsidiary of Tata Motors Ltd, and Ford India Private Limited (FIPL), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Gujarat (GoG) for the potential acquisition of FIPL’s Sanand vehicle manufacturing facility.

  • The MoU includes potential acquisition of the facility’s land & buildings, vehicle manufacturing plant, machinery and equipment and transfer of all eligible employees of FIPL Sanand’s vehicle manufacturing operations, subject to the signing of definitive agreements and receipt of relevant approvals.

Gujarat govt signs MoU with Isha Outreach to save soil
Gujarat Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Isha Outreach to save soil. The MoU was signed in the presence of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev- the founder of Isha Foundation and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

  • He said that 115 soil health laboratories have been set up across the state to test and certify soil health.
  • The MoU will include aspects of soil protection like preventing aridity, salinity and increasing green cover. Sadhguru is on a 100-day bike expedition covering 30 thousand kilometres with the message of saving soil.

ISSF World Cup: Elavenil, Ramita and Shreya win gold in women’s 10m air rifle team competition
India opened their account at the ongoing ISSF World Cup with the trio of Elavenil Valarivan, Ramita and Shreya Agrawal claiming the gold medal in the 10m air rifle team women competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.

  • The Indian trio outplayed Denmark represented by Anna Nielsen, Emma Koch and Rikke Maeng Ibsen, 17-5 in the gold medal contest. Poland won bronze in the event.
  • Former world number one Elavenil, Ramita and Shreya had reached the gold medal clash after two rounds of qualification.

Wesley So wins the Norway Chess Blitz Tournament
Reigning U.S. chess champion Wesley So recently won the blitz event of the 10th Norway Chess Tournament in style, defeating world champion Magnus Carlsen

  • The Filipino American chess grandmaster recovered from a rocky start, having been beaten by China’s Wang Hao in the event’s opening round.
  • After settling draws against Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and India’s five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, So secured five successive wins, including one against Carlsen, to win the blitz event.


APPOINTMENTS

Rajesh Gera appointed DG National Informatics Centre
Senior scientist Rajesh Gera has been appointed as the Director-General, National Informatics Centre (NIC), a Personnel Ministry order issued. He is currently Deputy Director-General in the NIC.

  • The National Informatics Centre is an Indian government organization under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, was established in 1976 with the objective to provide technology-driven solutions to central and state governments.

Centre appoints DFS Joint Secretary Pankaj Sharma as PFRDA part-time member
The Centre has appointed Pankaj Sharma, Joint Secretary in Department of Financial Services (DFS) as part-time member of the Pension Fund Regulatory & Development Authority (PFRDA).

  • Pension regulator PFRDA has a Chairman besides three whole-time members and three part-time members (only two are filled up posts). Anne George Matthew, Additional Secretary in Finance Ministry is the other part-time member in PFRDA Board.
  • Meanwhile, the Centre has appointed Suchindra Mishra, Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services as a member in the Board of International Financial Services Authority (IFSCA). It has also appointed Shashank Saxena, Senior Economic Advisor in Department of Economic Affairs as a member in IFSCA, which is currently the Gift City regulator.

Retired SBI senior executive Natarajan Sundar joins NARCL as MD CEO
Former State Bank of India (SBI) executive Natarajan Sundar has been appointed managing director and CEO of National Assets Reconstruction Company Ltd (NARCL).

  • Sundar, who served SBI for over 37 years, retired as Deputy Managing Director and Chief Credit Officer of the bank on April 30, 2022. He has rich experience in corporate banking policies and products.

Jharkhand to Receive WHO Award for Tobacco Control
Lalit Ranjan Pathak, nodal officer of The National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) of Jharkhand, informed that Jharkhand has been selected by the World Health Organization for the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Award, 2022 for its efforts to control tobacco consumption.

  • NTCP was launched in Jharkhand in 2012 when the tobacco prevalence rate in the State was 51.1 per cent, of which 48 per cent were smokeless users, according to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS)-1 report.
  • The GATS-2 report, which was published in 2018, said tobacco users came down to 38.9 per cent in the State, of which 35.4 per cent were smokeless users.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Supercomputer ‘PARAM Ananta’ commissioned at IIT Gandhinagar
PARAM Ananta, a supercomputing facility under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), jointly steered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and implemented by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), was commissioned at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN).

  • The new facility is set to provide computational power to the scientific community of IITGN as well as the academic institutions and industries in the vicinity of the institute. It will help them take their R&D efforts to a global scale.
  • The logo of PARAM Ananta symbolises the Sudarshan Chakra in the form of the sun along with data grid mountains merging in perspective with the limitless horizon. The 838 teraflops (TF) supercomputing system is powered with 7400 CPU cores, 52TB RAM, 1PiB of storage space, and an enormous power of GPU nodes along with the usual software stack required to run high-end simulations.

Bollywood Singer KK passes away
Popular playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, fondly known as KK, passed away after a concert in Kolkata. He was 53 years old.

  • He has sung superhit numbers in several languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali, among others.
