President Kovind inaugurates Shirdi International Airport

President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated Shirdi International Airport in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.

  • He also flagged off the inaugural flight of Alliance Air from Shirdi to Mumbai.

Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi inaugurates the 3rd edition of ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ at Dilli Haat, INA

The Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi inaugurated the 3rd annual ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ at Dilli Haat (INA). For most women, this is the first time that they are travelling to Delhi from remotest parts of the country to showcase their unique merchandise to the people of Delhi and surrounding areas.

  • With the theme ‘Good for Women; Good for India; Good for you’, the Ministry intends to highlight the health and environmental advantages of organic goods, provide a platform for women engaged in it and boost the development of sustainable and easily accessible sales outlets for women producers from the remotest corners of India.

MP CM launches ‘Single Click Pension Delivery’ scheme

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched ‘Single Click Pension Delivery’ scheme, wherein the money will go directly into the account of the beneficiaries. More than 35 lakh people of the state will be benefitted from this move.

Chauhan also honoured the elderly who completed the age of 100 years with the “Shataayu” award.

IREDA lists 5-year Green Masala Bond in UK

The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency launched a new Green Masala Bond on the London Stock Exchange’s new International Securities Market to raise funds to finance renewable energy projects across India.

The five-year dated bond raised approximately $300 million (Rs19.5 billion), with a coupon of 7.125%, and became the first Green Masala Bond to be listed on the International Securities Market (ISM).

Burqa ban comes into effect from today in Austria

Austria’s law banning face veils such as burkhas or niqabs comes into effect from today (October 1, 2017). The government said, acceptance and respect of Austrian values are basic conditions for successful cohabitation between the majority Austrian population and people from third countries living in Austria

UAE begins collecting ‘sin’ taxes on tobacco, energy drinks

 The United Arab Emirates has begun collecting new “sin” taxes on tobacco products, energy drinks and soft drinks.

  • Beginning October 1, tobacco and energy drinks will be taxed at 100 per cent and soft drinks at 50 per cent. 
  • All six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council have agreed to begin collecting so-called VAT taxes, though others may begin later than January.
  • The GCC includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.


ECONOMY

India’s end-June external debt at $485.8 billion: RBI

According to data from the Reserve Bank of India, India’s overseas debt rose marginally in the June quarter, but the corporates’ financial engineering led to an 8 percent in short term debt rise, while the long term debt fall 0.1 percent.

  • India’s external debt amounted to $485.8 billion during the quarter ended June’17, up 1.3 per cent over the same period a year ago.

Verstappen wins Malaysian GP ahead of Hamilton

Max Verstappen has won the F1’s Malaysian Grand Prix after beating Lewis Hamilton.

Female assistant referee to be seen in U-17 World Cup for first time

The U-17 World Cup will set a record of sorts as it will see for the first time a female assistant referee in a FIFA men’s competition this time.

  • FIFA, the world governing body of football, said it’s time for elite female support referees to be involved in a men’s competition.
  • Seven female assistant referees from across the world, one from each continent, have been chosen by FIFA along with 70 male referees to officiate the 52 matches in the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be played in six Indian cities from October 6-28.

Official Ball for FIFA U-17 World Cup Unveiled

FIFA has launched the official ball for Under-17 football World Cup and it will be called Krasava, a word generally used by Russian sports fans to describe a striking performance and it is the ultimate praise for a team when they play with creativity and flair.

  • The ball is manufactured by ‘Adidas’  and the pattern on it features a striking red design with jagged lines running through it, designed to represent the design of a Russian Ruby and the metaphorical jewel of the game.

Indian entrepreneur wins UK business award for innovative IT solutions

A Ghana-based Indian entrepreneur has won a prestigious business award in the UK for his efforts to bring innovative IT solutions to Africa.

  • Birendra Sasmal, CEO of Subah, bagged the International Business Person of the Year at the Asian Achievers Awards in London for turning the company into a thriving IT, telecoms and manufacturing success story with operations across West Africa.

Veteran journalist, Dainik Asam editor RM Bhagawati dies at 84

Radhika Mohan Bhagawati, veteran Guwahati-based journalist and editor of Dainik Asam, oldest Assamese daily newspaper, has passed away.

The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year. The holiday is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
