Delhi govt launches ‘Operation SHIELD’ in 21 containment areas
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced ‘Operation SHIELD’ in 21 containment zones to curb the spread of COVID-19 and warned of strict action against those misbehaving with healthcare personnel in the city.

  • Under the first ‘S’ of the operation, the government seals the area immediately and its surroundings after geographical marking following positive cases there.
  • In the next stage, we put people of sealed areas under home quarantine and then in the third stage, the process begins to isolate those who have symptoms of COVID-19 and trace their contacts.
  • About ‘E’ character of ‘Operation SHIELD’, Kejriwal explained that the government ensures home-delivery of essential items.
  • “After this stage, the government sanitises such areas where one or two positive cases have been found.
  • “Under ‘D’, checking of door-to-door houses is conducted to ascertain whether anybody in containment has cough or any other symptoms of COVID-19.

Govt announces Rs 15,000 crore package to ramp up health infra to fight COVID-19
The government announced a financial package of Rs 15,000 crore to ramp up the overall healthcare infrastructure in tackling the coronavirus pandemic that has infected nearly 6,500 people and has left at least 196 dead in the country.

  • The government said an amount of Rs 7,774 crore out of the package will be utilised for immediate response to the pandemic while rest of it will be spent in the medium-term (1-4 years) under mission mode approach.
  • Separately, a Group of Ministers (GoM) chaired by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan carried out a comprehensive review of the overall containment as well as management of COVID-19 in the country

Railways designs ‘doctor’s booth’ for zero-contact check-ups
The West Central Railway’s Coach Rehabilitation Workshop (CRWS) has designed a mobile “doctor’s booth”, using a toilet from one of its old coaches, to facilitate zero-contact check-ups in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

  • The CRWS in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal city repurposed the toilet from an old bogey, by converting it into a cabin, which can be used by doctors to examine patients without directly coming into contact with them.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

 China becomes world’s top patent filer: UN
According to World Intellectual Property Organisation’s annual report, China last year became the world leader in international patent filings, unseating the United States which had held the top spot for more than four decade.

  • A record 265,800 international patent applications were filed last year, a 5.2 per cent increase on 2018.
  • China and the United States were followed by Japan, Germany and South Korea as the world’s top patent application filers.

Bank of Baroda rolls out mobile ATM in Mumbai
Public sector lender Bank of Baroda said it has rolled out a mobile ATM which will move in various parts of Mumbai to help customers withdraw money in their localities.

  • The mobile ATM will move around various residential colonies of the city.

Flipkart, ICICI Lombard, Go Digit to offer COVID-19 focused health insurance
E-commerce marketplace Flipkart, in partnership with ICICI Lombard and Go Digit General Insurance, has launched health insurance policies on its platform that distinctly cover COVID-19.

  • The COVID-19 Protection Cover by ICICI Lombard provides an instant Rs 25,000 benefit plan paid to the customer on positive diagnosis of COVID-19. It is priced at an annual premium of Rs 159.
  • The Digit Illness Group Insurance offered by Digit Insurance allows consumers to avail a hospitalisation cover up to a sum assured of Rs 1 lakh with an annual premium of Rs 511
  • Further, there is no limit on room rent or intensive care unit. The policy covers 30 days pre-hospitalisation and 60 days post-hospitalisation fee. Policyholders can also avail one per cent of the sum assured for ambulance services.

DBS revises India’s GDP estimate to 1.5 pc for FY21
Singapore’s banking group DBS revised the country’s GDP estimate to 1.5 per cent for the current fiscal amid the current lockdown due to COVID-19.

  • This comes a day after American brokerage Goldman Sachs revised its forecast for the country’s real GDP growth to 1.6 per cent as against 3.3 per cent it had estimated earlier.

Goldman Sachs cuts India GDP growth forecast to 1.6% in FY21
Goldman Sachs expects the global economy to sink into recession in 2020 and sees the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic–hit global gross domestic product (GDP) come in at a negative 1.8 per cent in 2020.

  •  The latest forecast is a 5 percentage point (pp) downward revision since early this year and around 3 pp lower than the March 22 forecast.
  • For India, the global research house has lowered its real GDP forecast to 1.6 per cent in financial year 2020-21 (FY21) from 3.3 per cent earlier. This, however, is still higher than United States, which it now sees contracting to -6.2 per cent in 2020 (from -3.7 per cent earlier).

India retains 108th slot at FIFA’s latest ranking
India football team retained its 108th spot in the latest FIFA rankings.Belgium and France retained their first and second positions respectively in the latest rankings. Brazil is on the third place followed by England.

  • The solitary change sees South Sudan move into joint-168th position with Bermuda after the latter dropped a ranking point thanks to a 2-0 defeat in Jamaica (48th, unchanged) on March 11.

IFFCO Tokio General Insurance appoints Anamika Roy Rashtrawar as MD, CEO
IFFCO Tokio General Insurance Company has appointed Anamika Roy Rashtrawar as its managing director and chief executive officer with effect from March 27.

  • Rashtrawar, who takes over from Warendra Sinha after his retirement, is the first woman MD and CEO of a large private sector general insurance company in India.

AU Small Finance Bank appoints R V Verma as chairman
AU Small Finance Bank said the Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Raj Vikash Verma as Part-time Chairman of the bank for a period of one year.

  • The RBI has also approved reappointment of Sanjay Agarwal as managing director and CEO of the bank. Agarwal, who has been associated with this institution since its inception in 1996 (erstwhile AU Financiers (India) Limited, is also its promoter.

Jeff Bezos tops Forbes billionaires list for the 3rd year
In COVID-19 times, Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has maintained his top slot as world’s richest man with a net worth of $113 billion, followed by Bill Gates at $98 billion, according to the latest Forbes 34th annual world’s billionaires list. 

  • Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of luxury magnate LVMH (LVMHF), moved up the list as the third-wealthiest person with $76 billion fortune. At $67.5 billion, Warren Buffett’s fortune landed at fourth place.
  • The total combined net worth of this year’s billionaires is, down from $8.7 trillion in 2020.


OBITUARIES

John Prine, US folk and country songwriter passes away
John Prine, the US folk and country singer beloved of Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and more, has died aged 73 due to complications from Covid-19.

  • The Grammy winner with 19 studio albums to his name this year received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy.
  • In 2019 Prine was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and in 2016 joined elite company including Chuck Berry and Leonard Cohen in earning a prestigious songwriting award from the PEN literary organization.

 Former cricketer Jackie du Preez passes away
The former Zimbabwean cricketer Jackie du Preez passed away in Harare due to a long-standing heart condition.

  • The leg-spinner played for South Africa in Zimbabwe’s pre-independence days. He played two Tests for South Africa in 1967.

Prize-winning reporter writes book on Melania Trump called ‘The Art of Her Deal’
A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The Washington Post has written an unauthorized biography of first lady Melania Trump. Mary Jordan’s “The Art of Her Deal,” which draws upon more than 100 interviews, comes out June 16.

  • Jordan began working on the book in 2015, well before Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the presidential election. She investigated everything from Melania Knauss’ childhood in Slovenia to her years as a model to her relationship with her husband.
