PM Narendra Modi unveils postage stamp on Gujarat High Court’s Diamond jubilee event
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Gujarat High Court. The prime minister also virtually released a commemorative postage stamp on Gujarat High Court, as part of the institution’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

  • The Gujarat High Court has completed sixty years of its establishment on May 1, 2020.

PM Modi launches ‘Asom Mala’ programme in Assam’s Sonitpur to boost road infrastructure
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Asom Mala’ programme in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district with an aim to boost the state’s road infrastructure and contribute to the state’s economic progress and improve connectivity.

  • The programme is unique for its emphasis on effective maintenance through continuous field data collection and its linkage with the Road Asset Management System.
  • PM Modi also laid the foundation stones of medical colleges and hospitals in Biswanath and Charaideo with an aim to boost Assam’s health infrastructure.The two medical colleges and hospitals are being set up at Biswanath and Charaideo at a total estimated project cost of over Rs 1,100 crores.
  • The Prime Minister also dedicatef the LPG import terminal built by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to the nation in Haldia, West Bengal.

President Kovind inaugurates General KS Thimayya Museum in Karnataka
President Ram Nath Kovind, who inaugurated Gen. Thimayya Memorial Museum at Madikeri in Kodagu district said it commemorates the services and valour of one of the greatest soldiers of India.

  • General K.S. Thimayya served as the Chief of Army Staff from 1957 to 1961 and his ancestral house ‘Sunny Side’ has been renovated and converted into a museum.
  • The museum showcases memorabilia, including weapons and military uniforms, and houses a battle tank at the entrance in addition to a fighter jet, MiG 21, both of which were used in the 1971 war.

National Horticulture Fair 2021 begins in Bengaluru 
This year’s edition of the five-day national horticulture fair being organized by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) will be begin at the Institute’s Hessarghatta campus on the outskirts of Bengaluru city. Kailash Choudhry, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, inaugurated the event virtually.

  • The country’s premier horticulture fair, which is being held both in physical and virtual formats for the first time, will showcase cutting edge technologies, crop varieties, pest and disease management practices and processing methods among others.
  • The fair, which is being held under the theme ‘For start-up and stand-up India’ aims to increase farmers’ incomes by turning horticulture into a business enterprise especially in the wake of the recent trend of educated youth taking to farming.

India, Afghanistan sign MoU for construction of Lalandar [Shatoot] Dam 
India and Afghanistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) virtually for the construction of the Lalandar [Shatoot] Dam in Afghanistan as part of the new development partnership between the two nations.

  • The proposed dam would meet the safe drinking water needs of Kabul city, provide irrigation water to nearby areas, rehabilitate the existing irrigation and drainage network, aid in flood protection and management efforts in the area, and also provide electricity to the region.
  • This is the second major dam being built by India in Afghanistan, after the India- Afghanistan Friendship Dam (Salma Dam), which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister and the President in June 2016.

Food regulator FSSAI notifies regulations to limit trans fat in food items
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified prohibition regulations called the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Second Amendment Regulations, 2021 to limit the content of trans fat in all food items.

  • With this, India joins the league of 40 nations globally that have enacted best practice policies to eliminate trans fats.India would be among the first countries in Asia after Thailand in achieving the best-practice policies in trans fat elimination.
  • This regulation states that all food products in which edible oils and fats are used as an ingredient should not contain industrial trans fatty acids more than 2 per cent by mass of the total oils/fats present in the product, on and from January 1, 2022.
  • It also defines industrial trans fatty acids as: “All the geometrical isomers of mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids having non-conjugated, interrupted by at least one methylene group, carbon-carbon double bonds in the trans configuration. It excludes trans-fatty acids from dairy, meat, fish and their products.

UP govt announces a unique 16-digit Unicode to identify landholdings
The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced a system of issuing a unique 16-digit Unicode to mark all kinds of landholdings in the state.

  • The revenue department will be issuing the Unicode for marking all kinds of agricultural, residential and commercial land and a person will now be able to know the details of the land with a single click.
  • The Unicode number of the land will be 16 digits with the first six digits based on the population of the land, the next 4 digits determining the unique identity of the land. The digits from 11 to 14 will be the number of the division of the land. The last 2 digits will have the details of the category, through which, the agricultural, residential and commercial land will be identified.

Delhi Cabinet Approves ‘Mukhyamantri Vigyan Pratibha Pariksha’ Scholarship Scheme
The Delhi cabinet approved ‘Mukhyamantri Vigyan Pratibha Pariksha’ in which Rs 5,000 will be provided to Rs 1,000 meritorious students of Class 9 in schools of Delhi as a science scholarship.

  • The scholarship will provide a boost to science education in secondary classes at the school level.
  • The students studying in Delhi schools who have secured more than 60 percent in Class 8 are eligible for the examination. Students belonging to SC, ST, PH, or OBC category will be given a relaxation of up to 5 percent of marks.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Moody’s projects nominal growth of 17% for next fiscal
Global rating agency Moody’s projected India’s nominal growth at 17% for the coming fiscal, a mark up from the 14.3% earlier, based on the “pro-growth” budget, but highlighted the weak prospects of fiscal consolidation.

  • The larger-than-expected deficit projections reflected both credible budgetary assumptions and greater transparency, but the government’s weak fiscal position is likely to remain a key credit challenge.
  • The agency had pegged India’s fiscal deficit for the current fiscal at 7.5% of GDP and 5.5% for the next fiscal, while the budget put the figures at 9.5% and 6.8% for FY21 and FY22, respectively.

Defence ministry, BEL ink pact to procure ship-borne modern radio system
The defence ministry signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure a software-defined radio tactical ship-borne system worth over Rs 1,000 crore.

  • The procurement of SDR-Tac (software-defined radio tactical) “will bring strategic depth to the armed forces”.
  • The SDR-Tac is a four channel multi-mode, multi-band, 19-inch rack mountable, ship-borne software defined radio system.

ONGC to develop India’s first Geothermal Field Development Project in Ladakh
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Union Territory of Ladakh and the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, to develop the country’s first geothermal field development project. The MoU inked will be a step towards creating a carbon-neutral Ladakh.

  • ONGC has planned this field development in Ladakh in three phases. Phase one involves exploratory-cum-production drilling of wells up to 500 metres depth and setting up of a pilot plant of up to 1 MW power capacity.
  • Phase two would involve deeper and lateral exploration of geothermal reservoir by drilling of optimal number of wells and setting up of a higher capacity demo plant and preparing a Detailed Project Report.
  • Phase three would involve commercial development of the geothermal plant.

Joe Root becomes first batsman to score 200 in 100th Test
England captain Joe Root smashed his fifth double hundred on Day 2 of the first Test against India in Chennai. Following his knock, Joe Root became the first batsman to score a double hundred in his 100th Test.

  • In the process, Root also surpassed former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq as the player with the highest individual score playing the 100th Test match of his career.

Rishabh Pant and Shabnim Ismail voted ICC Player of the Month for January 2021
India’s Rishabh Pant won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for January 2021 for his performances in the two Tests against Australia where he scored a 97 at Sydney and an unbeaten 89 at Brisbane that led India to a historic series win against arch-rivals Australia.

  • South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail was named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for January 2021 for her performances across three ODIs and two T20Is during the month.

Steve Smith wins Allan Border Medal for the third time in his career
Former captain Steve Smith claimed his third Allan Border Medal while Beth Mooney bagged her maiden Belinda Clarke Award, the top two honours of the Australian Cricket Awards.

  • Smith was honoured for his performances in all three formats of the game, while Mooney bagged the recognition in the Australian women’s game for the first time.It was double celebration for Smith as he also won the men’s ODI Player of the Year.

Skyroot, Bellatrix signs MoU to use latter’s orbital transfer vehicle
Skyroot Aerospace and Bellatrix Aerospace have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use the Orbital Transfer Vehicle being developed by Bellatrix Aerospace in the upper stage of Vikram series of launch vehicles being developed by Skyroot.

  • An Orbital Transfer Vehicle is a spacecraft that can perform various in-orbit operations including deployment of customer payload to precise orbits, allowing a launch vehicle to deliver satellites to more orbits than what was conventionally possible.
  • Skyroot and Bellatrix plan to have the first mission of a Vikram launcher with an Orbital Transfer Vehicle by 2023.


ENVIRONMENT

Tamil Nadu set to create state’s 5th tiger reserve
Following the Centre’s approval, Tamil Nadu government passed an order for creating the fifth tiger reserve in the state and the 51st in the country. 

  • The Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve will span the forests of Megamalai wildlife sanctuary and Srivilliputhur grizzled squirrel wildlife sanctuary spread across the districts of Theni, Virudhunagar and Madurai.
  • The 100,000-hectare area is home to a range of mammals and bird species and more than a dozen tigers. Forest officials have noticed 14 tigers regularly in both the wildlife sanctuaries.


OBITUARIES

Tennis legend Akhtar Ali passes away
Tennis legend Akhtar Ali, a father figure in Indian tennis, passed away following prolonged illness. He was 81.

  • Akhtar represented India in eight Davis Cup ties against Pakistan, Malaysia, Iran, Mexico, Japan and Monaco between 1958 and 1964.He was winner of the Asian mixed doubles championship.
  • He was National team coach from 1966 to 1993. He also coached the national teams of Malaysia (1968-70 and 1991-93) and Belgium (1980-84).
  • Akhtar was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his lifetime contribution to tennis.

Bollywood actor Rajiv Kapoor passes away
Bollywood actor and Raj Kapoor’s son Rajiv Kapoor passed away Mumbai. He was 58.

  • He made his acting debut with 1983 movie Ek Jaan Hain Hum. He gained recognition with his father’s last directorial Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). Some of his other memorable films include Aasmaan (1984), Lover Boy (1985), Zabardast (1985) and Hum To Chale Pardes (1988).
  • In 1996, Rajiv directed Prem Granth which featured his elder brother Rishi Kapoor in the lead role along with Madhuri Dixit. He ventured into production with brother Randhir Kapoor’s directorial Henna in 1991 and also produced Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999).
