Indian Railways Introduces 1st Double Stack Dwarf Container Service

Under the guidance of Piyush Goyal, Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Railways and Coal, in order to capture the lost traffic through the new delivery model for domestic cargo, Indian Railways has introduced Double Stack Dwarf Container Services.

  • This train was booked from the Reliance Rail Siding at Kanalus to Rewari in the state of Haryana.

Ministry of Tourism to organize the first ever India Tourism Mart (ITM)

The Ministry of Tourism in partnership with the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) and with the help of State/UT Governments is organizing the India Tourism Mart (ITM) 2018 from 16th to 18th September, 2018 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

  • FAITH is the apex organization of important trade and hospitality associations of the country.
  • The objective of the Mart is to create a Global Tourism Mart for India on lines of major international travel marts being held in countries across the world.

MoHUA launched LAP and TPS for 25 Smart Cities

To fast track the resolution of area based infrastructure issues, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry launched the Local Area Plan (LAP) and Town Plan Schemes (TPS) for 25 smart cities in the country, under which the ministry will provide Rs 2 crore as central assistance to every city for planned urban expansion.

  • An amount of Rs 50 crore would be provided as Central assistance at the rate of Rs 2 crore per city for identified 25 cities for preparing LAP/TPS.
  • The 25 cities are Greater Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Vadodara, Indore, Chennai, Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Warangal, Pune, Varanasi, Jaipur, Amritsar, Patna, Faridabad, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Raipur, Panaji, Shimla, New Kolkata, Srinagar, Dehradun, Aizawl, Gangtok and Imphal.

Six Universities granted ‘Institute of Eminence’ Status

The Union Government has granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status to six institutions including 3 from Public Sector and 3 from Private Sector.

  • The decision was taken on the basis of the recommendations given by an Empowered Expert Committee (EEC).

Three Public Universities granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status:

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay,
  • IIT-Delhi,
  • IISc Bangalore.

Three Private Universities granted the Institutions of Eminence (IoEs) status:

  • Jio Institute by Reliance Foundation,
  • BITS Pilani,
  • Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

International Round Table Conference on Data for New India held in New Delhi

The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has organised a two-day International Round Table Conference on ‘Data for New India’ in New Delhi. Such a Conference was organized in India for the first time.

  • The objective of the Round Table Conference was to identify innovative ideas for improving the statistical system in India, taking cue from the best practices followed in advanced countries like Canada, UK and Australia.

Plastic ban in Odisha starting Oct 2

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a ban on the use of plastic in the state from October 2, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

  • In the first phase, plastic will be banned in six places — the pilgrim city of Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela.

Andhra Pradesh tops ease of doing business rankings

Andhra Pradesh has emerged as the top ranked state in the Union governments latest ease of doing business index for states.

  • As per the index, jointly prepared by the World Bank and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Andhra Pradesh is followed by neighbouring Telangana, and Haryana is in third place.
  • Meghalaya was ranked last at 36th position and appeared as the worst performing state.

Gujarat signs MoU with KOTRA to strengthen trade, industrial relations

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Industries and Mines Department under the Gujarat government and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA).

  • The MoU was signed with an aim to recognize a mutual desire to further enhance and strengthen Korea – Gujarat trade and industrial investment relations and to encourage ongoing dialogue and cooperation.

Microsoft signs MoU with Rajasthan government for digital training to 9,500 students

Microsoft has signed an MoU with the Rajasthan government to provide free digital training to 9,500 college students in one year. The initiative was taken for the enhancement of digital learning and capacity building of college students in the state.

CM Yogi forms committee to ensure safety in UP jails

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath formed a three member-committee to look after the security arrangements in the prisons across the state.

  • The committee will be headed by former Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Sulkhan Singh.

Varanasi to host Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2019

The next Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in the holy city of Varanasi in January 2019. The theme of the three-day event, which is being organised in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, will be the ‘Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India’.

Disney launches campaign to support women filmmakers

Disney has launched a campaign titled ‘Dream Big Princess’ with an aim to inspire and support aspiring women filmmakers.

  • The studio has selected 21 women from 13 countries to develop digital short films about women who inspire them.
  • The filmmakers will tell the stories of real women working in various industries, including entertainment, sports, government, science and philanthropy.

Nepal to host BIMSTEC Summit on Aug 31

Nepal is set to hold a two-day Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, starting from August 31, in Kathmandu.

  • Nepal, the host nation and the current chair of the BIMSTEC, has made preparations to discuss over the trans-border crimes, terrorism, natural calamities, extremism, and illegal trade of arms, ammunition and drugs.
  • The BIMSTEC, a regional body founded in July 1997, has Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand as other members of the regional forum, including Nepal.


ADB approves USD 503 mln lining project of the Son canal in Bihar

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved USD 503-million lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad-Bhojpur region of Bihar which would benefit the agriculture sector immensely in the region.


Telecom Department Clears Vodafone-Idea Merger With Riders

The telecom ministry approved the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular Ltd. that will create the country’s largest mobile services operator. The Department of Telecom has cleared the Vodafone-Idea merger, but both companies will have to meet conditions for final approval.


India women’s cricket coach Arothe resigns

India’s women cricket team coach Tushar Arothe has stepped down from the role, citing personal reasons. 

  • Under his stint, the team reached the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017. In 2018, the team won the three-match ODI series and five-match T20I series in South Africa. Earlier this year, the team successfully reached the final of the Asia Cup held in Malaysia.

Erdogan sworn in as Turkish president

Recep Tayyip Erdogan was sworn-in as the President of Republic of Turkey for another term under the new governmental system.

  • Erdogan, who has served as the prime minister of Turkey and then as president for 15 years, won the June 24 election with 52 percent of the vote.
