Weyan: 1st Village to Vaccinate 100% Adult Population
A remote hamlet in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir has become the first village in India to vaccinate all its adult population against the novel coronavirus.

  • Weyan, a village in district Bandipora (J&K) has become the first village in the country, where the entire population above 18 years has been vaccinated.

India Taking All Steps to Ensure it Becomes Free of Single-use Plastic by 2022: Prakash Javadekar
India is taking all steps to ensure that the country becomes free of single-use plastic by 2022 as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said while launching ‘Plastic Hackathon 2021’ campaign.

  • Kick-starting the two-month long awareness campaign on single-use plastics (SUPs), Javadekar, in an audio message, said the Environment Ministry has taken several steps towards eliminating single-use plastic from the country.
  • The “India Plastic Challenge – Hackathon 2021” is a unique competition calling upon start-ups /entrepreneurs and students of   Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop innovative solutions to mitigate plastic pollution and develop alternatives to single use plastics.

PM Modi launches E-100 project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the E-100 pilot project in Pune to mark the World Environment Day. The ambitious project aims to set up a network for production and distribution of ethanol across the nation.

  • The Prime Minister also released the ‘Report of the Expert Committee on Road Map for ethanol blending in India 2020-2025’, in line with the theme for World Environment Day this year – promotion of biofuels for a better environment.

Govt approves to allotment of 5 MHz spectrum in 700 MHz frequency band to Railways for enhanced safety and security of train operations
The Union Cabinet has approved an allotment of 5 Megahertz Spectrum in 700 MHz frequency band to Indian Railways for public safety and security services at stations and in trains.

  • With this spectrum, Railways has envisaged to provide Long Term Evolution, LTE-based Mobile Train Radio Communication on its route. The estimated investment in the project is more than Rs 25,000 crore and it will be completed in the next five years.
  • The purpose of the LTE for Railways is to provide secure and reliable voice, video and data communication services for operational, safety and security applications. It will be used for modern signalling and train protection systems and ensure seamless communication between loco pilots and guards.

Centre releases Revenue Deficit Grant of Rs 9871 crore to 17 States
Centre has released the 3rd monthly installment of Post Devolution Revenue Deficit (PDRD) Grant of Rs. 9,871 crore for the current financial year to 17 States.

  • With the release of 3rd installment, a total amount of Rs. 29,613 crore have been released in the first three months of the current financial year as Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant to the states.
  • The States recommended for Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant are: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

Govt approves 708 proposals for construction of 3.61 lakh houses under PMAY-U
The Government has approved 708 proposals for construction of 3.61 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U).The decision was taken at the 54th Meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) under PMAY-U held in New Delhi.

  • These houses are proposed to be constructed across Beneficiary Led Construction and Affordable Housing in Partnership verticals.
  • In addition, ‘PMAY- U Awards 2021 – 100 Days Challenge’ was also launched by Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) Durga Shanker Mishra .
  • The awards are given to recognize and celebrate the outstanding contribution and performances by States, Union Territories (UTs), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and beneficiaries for successful implementation of the Mission and create a healthy competition.

Jal Shakti Ministry allocates Rs 40,700 crore under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) phase -2 towards solid and liquid waste management
Jal Shakti Ministry said that Rs 40,700 crore have been allocated under Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) phase -2 towards solid and liquid waste management to support over two lakh villages in the current financial year.

  • The Ministry said, the Central share will be around Rs 14 thousand crore and the States will spend over Rs 8300 crore. The funds to the tune of Rs 12,730 crore will be made available through the 15th Finance Commission.
  • The implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase 2 in 2021-2022 will see construction of over 50 lakh individual household toilets, one lakh community toilets, plastic waste management units in over 2400 blocks, apart from the targeted support for over two lakh villages in implementation of solid and liquid waste management interventions.

Economist report ranks Dhaka, Karachi in worlds ten least liveable cities
Damascus remains the world’s least liveable city and most of the previous ten least liveable cities remain in the bottom ten this year, including Dhaka and Karachi in the Asia-Pacific region, as per the the 2021 edition of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (The EIU) Global Liveability Ranking.

  • The 2021 edition of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (The EIU) Global Liveability Ranking finds that Auckland is the most liveable city in the due to the ability of New Zealand city to contain Covid-19 faster, leading to the early lifting of restrictions than other cities around the world.

El Salvador becomes first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender
El Salvador has become the first country to make bitcoin legal tender, a move President Nayib Bukele hailed as a historic step towards financial inclusion and economic growth for the poor Central American nation.

  • The legislature, which Bukele controls, passed the bill with 62 of 84 possible votes.
  • Under the law, bitcoin can be used for purchases or tax payments, and bitcoin exchanges will not be subject to capital gains tax.

31st edition of India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol begin
The navies of India and Thailand have commenced the 31st edition of India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol (Indo-Thai CORPAT), aimed at keeping the Indian Ocean safe and secure for international trade.

  • Being held at their international boundary line, the joint patrolling of the two forces will culminate on June 11.
  • Indigenously-built naval offshore patrol vessel INS Saryu, Thailand’s offshore patrol vessel HTMS Krabi and Dornier maritime patrol aircraft from both navies are participating in the CORPAT.


BANKING & FINANCE

Sebi Slaps Rs 5 Cr Fine on Franklin Templeton AMC, Bans Vivek Kudva for 1 Year
Sebi barred Franklin Templeton AMC from launching any new debt scheme for two years and fined it Rs 5 crore for violating regulatory norms in the case of winding up of six debt schemes in 2020.

  • Also, it has been asked to refund investment management and advisory fees to the tune of Rs 512 crore, including interest, collected with respect to the six debt schemes, Sebi said.
  • In a separate order, the regulator has barred Vivek Kudva, former head of Asia Pacific (APAC) for Franklin Templeton, and his wife Roopa from the securities market for one year for redeeming units of Franklin Templeton MF schemes while in possession of non-public information.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India Projected to Grow at 8.3% in 2021: World Bank
India’s growth for FY 2021/22, which began in April 2021, is forecast at 8.3%, supported by plans for higher spending on infrastructure, rural development, and health, and a stronger-than-expected recovery in services, the World Bank says in its June 2021 Global Economic Prospects.

  • Better growth prospects since January, however, masks significant damage to economic activity from COVID19.
  • The economy is expected to follow the same, yet less pronounced, collapse and recovery seen during the first wave. Growth in FY 2022/23 is expected to slow to 7.5%.
  • The global economy is expected to expand 5.6% in 2021, the fastest post-recession pace in 80 years, largely on strong rebounds from a few major economies. However, many emerging market and developing economies continue to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, the World Bank says

Virender Sehwag Launches Cricket Website ‘CRICURU’
Former India opener Virender Sehwag launched cricket coaching website “CRICURU” with an aim to redefine the learning experience for budding players.

  • The curriculum for each player has been developed by Sehwag along with former India batsman and batting coach Sanjay Bangar.
  • The country’s first AI-enabled coaching website aims to offer a personalised learning experience for the younger players and help youngsters learn playing cricket through master classes of 30 player coaches from across the globe with about four hours of curated video content with each coach.

RBI Gives Nod To Re-Appoint CS Ghosh As MD & CEO Of Bandhan Bank
Bandhan Bank has received RBI nod to re-appoint Chandra Shekhar Ghosh as its MD and CEO for three years, lower than the five-year tenure approved by the company’s board in November last year.

  • Ghosh’s current term comes to an end on July 9, 2021.
  • With 30 years of experience in microfinance and development, Ghosh had set up Bandhan as an NGO in April 2001 and it was converted into an NBFC later.

Social media giant Facebook has named Spoorthi Priya as its grievance officer for India on its website.

  • The move comes in the backdrop of the new IT rules coming into effect recently that require significant social media intermediaries – those with over 50 lakh users – to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer and a chief compliance officerm

Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar Assumes Charge As DG Naval Operations
Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, AVSM, VSM has assumed charge as Director General Naval Operations.

  • The Flag Officer is a specialist in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and has served on frontline warships of the Navy as ASW Officer and later as the Executive Officer and Principal Warfare Officer of Guided Destroyer INS Mysore.
  • He has commanded the missile corvette INS Kora, the missile frigate INS Shivalik and the aircraft carrier INS Viraat.

Indian-American Student Wins Prestigious Award for Developing Eco-friendly Foam Alternative
An Indian-American student has won a prestigious award for developing an eco-friendly foam alternative, which was motivated by the impact of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.

  • Sohi Sanjay Patel, a sophomore at a Texas high school, was declared the winner of the Patrick H Hurd Sustainability Award at the 2021 virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
  • The award is given by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Her project proposes to provide a plant-derived, flame retardant polyurethane foam that could be used for housing insulation and other applications.

Three Indian universities achieve top-200 positions in QS World University Ranking
Three Indian universities are ranked in the top-200 in QS World University Rankings 2022, with IIT-Bombay securing 177th position, IIT-Delhi at 185th, and IISc-Bengaluru placed on 186th position.

  • IISc-Bengaluru has been ranked number 1 in the world for research, shows the QS Ranking data. QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, released the 18th edition of the world’s international university rankings.
  • The US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been ranked number 1 university in the world, with an overall score of 100. University of Oxford has been ranked second, while Stanford University has secured third position.

Rhea Chakraborty Topped ‘The Times 50 Most Desirable Women 2020’
Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty has topped the list of The Times 50 Most Desirable Women 2020. 

  • The Times 50 Most Desirable Women 2020 list features women under 40 across various fields. It puts the spotlight on those who have made a mark in the last one year and won hearts. The ranking is based on votes cast in an online poll, along with an internal jury.
  • Chakraborty was followed by Adline Castelino (Miss Universe 2020 – 3rd Runner-up) and Disha Patani, who secured second and third spot in the list.
  • Kiara Advani was listed at number 4 and Deepika Padukone at number 5. Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anupria Goenka, Ruhi Singh and Aavriti Choudhary (LIVA Miss Diva Supranational 2020) occupied the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth place, respectively.


ENVIRONMENT

Two species of Monals sighted together in Arunachal Pradesh
Two species of monals were sighted together by local wildlife enthusiasts in upper Siang district of central Arunachal Pradesh.

  • One discovered species is While Himalayan monal also called as Lophophorus impejanus. It is widely distributed from Afghanistan to northeast India. While, other is Sclater’s monal which is also called as Lophophorus sclateri. It is found in southern China and northern Myanmar.
  • It is listed as vulnerable by IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature). It was sighted near Komji Lipik at 2,850 metres.


OBITUARIES

Casting Director-producer Seher Aly Latif, Known for ‘The Lunchbox’, passes away
Casting director Seher Aly Latif, known for her work on films like The Lunchbox and Durgamati, died due to cardiac arrest, her associate and director Neeraj Udhwani said. She was in her early 40s.

  • Also the co-founder of independent production company Mutant Films, Seher backed the Netflix series Bhaag Beanie Bhaag, starring Swara Bhasker, and Maska, a film for the streaming service which featured Manisha Koirala.
  • Seher was known for her extensive work as a casting director on projects like mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan’s biopic The Man Who Knew Infinity, starring Dev Patel; filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s period film Viceroy’s House and Bhumi Pednekar-fronted drama feature Durgamati.
