Meeting of Regional Heads of Customs Administration of Asia Pacific Region of WCO Held in Kochi

The World Customs Organization (WCO), the world body for Customs agencies of various countries, called for enhancing cross border trade and international logistics. The call was made by the representatives of various customs agencies from around 33 countries in the Asia Pacific region at a meeting held in Kochi ahead of the 20th WCO Regional Heads of Customs Administration (RHCA), which will begin in Kochi. 

  • The trade day was organized to bring together senior officials of customs administrations, leaders from the private sector and academia to discuss contemporary issues in international trade and logistics.

158th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore Observed

The 158th birth anniversary of Rabindra Nath Tagore celebrated all over West Bengal. Various programmes have been organised to pay respect to Gurudev Tagore. The day began with musical soirees, probhat ferry and garlanding statues and potraits of Tagore.

  • The West Bengal Government has organised a special musical programme in Kolkata this afternoon to pay tributes to Gurudev Tagore. The day is also being observed in Santineketan.

Indian Army to commemorate 2019 as ‘Year of next of kin’

The Indian Army is commemorating this year as the ‘Year of Next of Kin’ and plans to reach out to the next of kin of battle casualties, ex-servicemen and serving soldiers to inform them of entitled financial benefits, welfare schemes and help resolve pension related problems.

  • The issue gains importance in light of most next of kin of deceased soldiers being unaware of the financial benefits that are entitled to them. Incorrect and incomplete documentation is a common problem for most of the next of kin, which aggravates their plight.

Microsoft unveils software for secure, verifiable voting

In a bid to help countries ensure secure and verifiable voting, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced “ElectionGuard” a free open-source software development kit (SDK). It will enable end-to-end verification of elections, open results to third-party organisations for secure validation, and allow individual voters to confirm their votes were correctly counted

  • It will make voting secure, more accessible, and more efficient anywhere it’s used in the US or in democratic nations around the world.

Andhra tribal welfare minister Kidari Sravan resigns from post

Tribal welfare minister of Andhra Pradesh, Kidari Sravan Kumar resigned from his ministerial post recently. He was given the charge of the ministry on November 11, 2018, after the sudden demise of his father KS Rao.

  • He contested in the recently concluded assembly elections from Araku constituency, results of which will be announced on May 23. His father represented the Araku assembly constituency and was killed by Maoists on September 23, 2018.

UN to hold 2020 ocean conference in Lisbon

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to hold its 2020 high-level conference early June in Portugal’s Lisbon to support the sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources.

  • The UNGA “decides that the overarching theme of the conference shall be “scaling up ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions.”

WHO and IFBA to eliminate industrially produced trans fats by 2023

WHO (World Health organization) collaborated with the International Food and Beverage Alliance (IFBA) to eliminate industrially produced trans fat (iTFA) from food supply worldwide by 2023. Trans fat-intake leads to coronary heart disease, due to which globally 5,00,000 deaths occur every year.

  • Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO had a meeting with the IFBA representatives, that included CEOs (chief executive officers) from around 12 companies comprising IFBA. This aligns with the WHO’s mission of its REPLACE action package, developed and launched in 2018.

Australian Qantas Airways launches world’s first zero-waste flight

Qantas flight F739 from Sydney to Adelaide was the first commercial flight to produce no landfill waste. About 1000 single-use plastics were replaced with alternative solutions or removed altogether from the flight, including Qantas staples like individually-packaged servings of milk and Vegemite. 

  • All inflight products on board were then disposed of by Qantas’ ‘Green Team’ via compost, reuse or recycling.

Bharatpe launches India’s first UPI Bahi Khata for merchants

BharatPe – India’s first Fintech start-up enabling payments for merchants through interoperable UPI QR codes, has announced its foray into merchant services with a new app. The app allows merchants to record their cash/credit (Udhar) sales customer wise, request accounts receivable from customers via SMS payment links, and keep track of accounts payable to suppliers, among other services.

  • The BharatPe app also serves as a networking platform for merchants to connect with other BharatPe merchants near them and to collaborate with them to both sources and expand their businesses.

Samsung unveils world’s highest-resolution image sensor

Samsung Electronics Co introduced the world’s highest-resolution image sensor, with 64 megapixels for smartphones, to meet the growing demand for mobile devices with better image quality. Samsung unveiled two new 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensors- the 64-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 and the 48-megapixel ISOCELL Bright GM2, expanding its 0.8-micrometer pixel image sensor lineup, the smallest pixel size currently available in the market.

Reliance Industries acquires global toy firm Hamleys

In a bid to become a dominant player in the global toy retail industry, Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) announced it has acquired iconic British toy retailer Hamleys from Chinese fashion wear firm C Banner International for an undisclosed sum.

  • Reliance Brands, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, has signed a definitive agreement with Hong Kong-listed firm C Banner International, to acquire 100 per cent shares of Hamleys.

AIFF technical committee clears Stimac as next India coach

The technical committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) picked up Igor Stimac as India’s new national team manager and has recommended his name to executive committee for the necessary approval. Stimac’s name was finalised after a marathon meeting at the AIFF headquarters in New Delhi.

OBITUARIES

1st Chronicler Of Partition, Prof. Kirpal Singh Passes Away

Prof Kirpal Singh, the first chronicler of Partition, who started building an archive in 1954, passed away at 95 in Chandigarh. He began his journey in Partition’s historiography in 1953 as a young lecturer at Khalsa College, Amritsar.

  • Amid the despair of Partition, he believed that the stories of hope were yet to be told. “People saved girls, collected dowry, and married them off. They sheltered them for years and later united them with families.

United Nations Global Road Safety Week

The Fifth United Nations Global Road Safety Week, under the theme “Leadership for road safety”, is taking place from May 6 to 12.  This major worldwide campaign was requested by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018 in resolution A/72/271 on improving global road safety.

  • The Global status report on road safety 2018 shows that road traffic crashes claim approximately 1.35 million lives across the world every year. An additional 20–50 million people are injured annually, with many sustaining permanent disabilities.
