Three-day Organic World Congress – 2017 inaugurated in Greater Noida

Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister, Shri Radha Mohan Singh inaugurated the three-day Organic World Congress – 2017 being organized at India Expo Centre in Greater Noida. It saw the participation of 1,400 representatives from 110 countries, and 2000 delegates from India. The Organic World Congress (OWC) is organized once every three years in a different country and this time it is being organised in India.

Delhi Govt Signs Twin City Agreement With Seoul

The Delhi government signed a twin city agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Government for strengthening cooperation in the fields of e-governance, transportation, climate change and smart city.

Telangana govt declares Urdu as second official language

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao declared Urdu as the state’s second official language. Every office in the state will now have an Urdu speaking officer, he added. First official language is Telugu.

India’s first Military Literature Festival in Chandigarh next month

India’s first Military Literature Festival (MLF) will be held in Chandigrarh in December next month as a tribute to the armed forces, whose contributions to the nation remain etched in history as iconic events. The MLF will be held here from December 7 to 9.

Google Arts and Culture unveils its first lab experiment in India

Announcing the launch of Future Relics, an interactive installation that takes participants on a shared journey, connecting the past with the present whilst looking to the future, Google Arts and Culture unveiled its first lab experiment in India in Mumbai.

Coastal security exercise along Bengal-Odisha coastline

Aiming to strengthen coastal security along the Odisha and West Bengal coastline, the governments of both states will hold a joint security exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’ in the Bay of Bengal this November.

  • The two-day exercise is meant to ensure preparedness against any sea-borne terror strike similar to the 2008 Mumbai attack.

Cartoon Network’s theme park to open in Surat

Amaazia, India’s first Cartoon Network branded amusement park, will open in Surat, Gujarat in the first quarter of 2019.

  • The amusement park will be divided into four major sections – a theme park, branded by Cartoon Network, a water park, a family recreational hub and a service apartment and retail shopping area.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

IEA Ministerial meeting held in Paris

Two day International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meet held in Paris, France. Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Raj Kumar Singh led the Indian delegation in the IEA Ministerial Meet.

APEC Summit 2017 begins in Vietnam

APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit 2017 began in Da Nand, Vietnam. It is scheduled on 10-11 November.

US grants $500k to promote religious freedom in India, Sri Lanka

The US has announced a grant of nearly USD 500,000 for organisations which can come up with ideas and projects to promote religious freedom in India and Sri Lanka.



BANKING

Banks to provide doorstep banking facilities to senior citizens & divyangs by 2017

The RBI has asked banks to provide doorstep banking facilities to senior citizens of more than 70 years of age and differently-abled persons by 31st December, 2017.

  • All banks, including small finance and payments banks have been directed that senior citizens and specially-abled persons, including the visually-impaired, should be provided basic services like pick-up of cash and instruments against receipt, delivery of cash against withdrawal from accounts, delivery of demand drafts, submission of Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and Life Certificates at the premises or residence of such customers. 


BUSINESS

GST Council raises Composition Scheme threshold to Rs 2 crore

The GST Council decided to raise Composition Scheme threshold to Rs 2 crore. The Council, which held its 23rd meeting in Guwahati, decided that there will be no inter-state taxes and input tax credit for composition dealers. Only 50 items, mostly demerit, sin and luxury goods will be in the top 28 per cent tax bracket. Meanwhile, aggregate revenue loss for Centre due to GST stood at Rs 60,000 crore and revenue loss for states is at Rs 30,000 crore.

GST Council cuts tax slab for 178 items from 28% to 18%

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that out of 228 items in the 28% tax bracket, 178 have been put into the lower tax category of 18%. It will be applicable from 15th of this month.

  • Tax rate will be 5% uniform for all AC or non-AC restaurants, except those in hotels with tariffs of more than Rs. 7,500, which will continue to be taxed at 18%. Outdoor catering will be taxed at 18% with ITC.

2018 FIFA World Cup official ball unveiled

Adidas Football has unveiled the ‘Telestar 18’ official ball for the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia. The 2018 FIFA World Cup from June 14 to July 15 will see a participation of 32 nations.



OBITUARY

Former cricketer A.G. Milkha Singh passes away

Former India left-hand batsman Amritsar Govindsingh Milkha Singh has passed away following cardiac arrest.
