PM Modi inaugurates first ever submarine optical fibre cable project for Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2300 kilometre submarine optical fibre cable network between Chennai and Andaman and Nicobar Islands at the cost of Rs. 1,224 Crore.

  • This project is the Union government’s commitment for Ease of living.
  • This project will boost tourism in the Islands and this is Independence Day gift for the people of Andaman and Nicobar islands .

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar launches portal on Human Elephant Conflict on World Elephant Day

The Minister for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar released document on Best Practices and launched “SURAKHSYA” a portal on Human Elephant Conflict on the occasion of World Elephant Day, 2020.

  • The efforts are in full swing to provide food and water to the animals in the forests itself to deal with the growing human-animal conflict cases.
  • The World Elephant Day is observed every year on 12th August to spread awareness about the animal. It was launched in 2012 to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants.

‘Gandagi Bharat Chorho’: PM Modi Launches Week-Long Cleanliness Campaign For Garbage-Free India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a week-long campaign ‘Gandagi Bharat Chorho’ to free India of garbage and waste.

  • The campaign will continue till August 15. The rural and urban areas of the country will witness special ‘swachhta’ initiatives during the week.

Punjab Cricket Association’s new international stadium to be named after Patiala’s last ruler

The Punjab Cricket Association has decided to name its new stadium in Mullanpur after the last ruler of erstwhile Patiala state, late Maharaja Yadavindra Singh, who played a Test match for India in 1934.

  • He was the father of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh
  • The PCA has also started the process of renovating the existing IS Bindra Stadium to turn it into an international cricket academy.

Bihar Pollution Control Board signs MoA with IIT, Delhi for air quality management

The Bihar State Pollution Control Board has signed a ”Memorandum of Agreement” (MoA) with IIT, Delhi for setting up of geographical information system (GIS) based platform for air quality management in the state.

  • The agreement, which was signed to help in identifying sources and transport of PM 2.5 at a “very high resolution” and help the board to identify “effective mitigation measures”.
  • This particular project will help to identify local hot spot of particulate matter PM 2.5 in the non-attainment cities in Bihar namely Patna, Gaya and Muzaffarpur.

Chhattisgarh CM launches Indira Van Mitan Yojana

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced the launch of Indira Van Mitan Yojana on the occasion of World Tribal Day.

  • Under this scheme, groups of youth will be formed in 10,000 villages of tribal area of the state and all forest-based economic activities will be conducted through these groups.
  • The Indira Van Mitan scheme aims to add 19 lakh families from scheduled areas. Through this scheme, groups will be empowered to manage trees, so that they can collect the forest produce from the trees of the forest areas and get economic benefits.

Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur becomes country’s first Municipal Corporation to provide forestland right certificates to people of urban area

Chhattisgarh’s Jagdalpur has become the first municipal corporation of the country, where people of urban area have been provided forest land right certificates.

  • Jagdalpur is among the few municipal corporations, jurisdiction areas of which includes forestlands.
  • Nearly 1777 applications have been received for forestland right certificates, which will be resolved as per the rules.

Haryana CM launches anti-bullying campaign of Faridabad Police

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the anti-bullying campaign of Faridabad police by unveiling its Instagram, Facebook and Twitter pages to flag the problem of bullying at home, in neighbourhood, schools, colleges and workplace.

  • The district police aims to implement targeted programmes to counter the menace of bullying.
  • The campaign will particularly target teenagers, the segment worst-affected by the problem. Bullying destroys a victim’s confidence, impairs their personality development, stunts their social intelligence and drives them to depression and a host of other diseases.

US IT firm The Boston Group to setup a centre at Vizag

The Andhra Pradesh government has entered into an understanding with the U.S.-based Boston Group for setting up its development centre in Visakhapatnam.

  • The proposed firm is expected to create more thant 250 jobs in the IT sector in the state.

CDSL gets UIDAI nod for e-KYC Aadhaar authentication

Leading depository CDSL said it has received clearance from UIDAI to carry out e-KYC authentication using Aadhaar.

  • Once market intermediaries register as KUA, they can open accounts using Aadhaar-based e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer).
  • CDSL said it will facilitate intermediaries to offer seamless online account opening using Aadhaar-based e-KYC.

Bangladesh to construct standalone war memorial for Indian soldiers killed by Pak in 1971

The government of Bangladesh has decided to construct a standalone war memorial in Ashuganj of Brahmanbaria district, bordering Tripura for the Indian soldiers who were killed by Pakistan during the country’s struggle for Independence in 1971.

  • The construction of the monument will be coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s Independence.
  • The architectural design will reflect the bond between the neighbours.

Mauritius declares state of environmental emergency

Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, has declared a “state of environmental emergency” after Wakashio, a Japanese bulker that ran aground off the coast of the island nation, began spilling oil.

  • The stranded ship, MV Wakashio currently lying at Pointe d’Esny in an area of wetlands near a marine park, is creating an ecological disaster, endangering corals, fish and other marine life around the Indian Ocean island.
  • The incident is being considered as one of the most terrible ecological crises that Mauritius has ever seen.


BANKING & FINANCE

Credit guarantee scheme extended to larger firms, self-employed

The Centre has expanded its credit guarantee scheme for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to cover loans given to larger firms, as well as to self-employed people and professionals who have taken loans for business purposes.

  • The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme was rolled out in May as part of the Centre’s Aatmanirbhar package in response to the COVID-19 crisis. It has a corpus of ₹41,600 crore.
  • Eligible MSMEs had to have an annual turnover up to ₹100 crore, with outstanding loans of up to ₹25 crore as on February 29, 2020.

Flipkart launches its startup accelerator program Flipkart Leap

Flipkart announced the launch of Flipkart Leap the company’s first startup accelerator program with the aim to help new and upcoming startups grow, scale, navigate challenges.

  • Flipkart Leap will identify B2C and B2B startups and will conduct a 16-week virtual program. Throughout the program, Flipkart’s leadership from business, operations, product and technology will mentor the selected startups.
  • Flipkart Leap has identified five themes to shortlist relevant startups. These include design & make for India, innovation in digital commerce, technologies to empower the retail ecosystem, supply chain management & logistics and enabling relevant deep tech applications

Max Verstappen wins 70th Anniversary Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has become the first non-Mercedes driver to win a race in 2020, the Red Bull racer winning out in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix from the Mercedes pairing of Lewis Hamilton and polesitter Valtteri Bottas after an incredible display at Silverstone.

  • Lewis Hamilton, who finished second place in Formula One’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, equalled Ferrari great Michael Schumacher’s record of 155 career podium finishes.

Walter Martos sworn in as new Prime Minister of Peru

Peruvian president Martin Vizcarra named retired general Walter Martos, the former defense minister, as the country’s new prime minister as part of cabinet reshuffle over a clash with the opposition-held Congress.

  • Marton will replace Pedro Cateriano.

Veteran administrator Mohamed Ould Bilal named Mauritania’s new PM

Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani appointed Mohamed Ould Bilal, the former head of several state agencies, as the new prime minister.

  • Bilal replaces Ismail Ould Cheikh Sidiya, who resigned with his entire government earlier in the day.

Three of 13 books penned by Mizoram governor during lockdown released

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has released ”Corona Kavithakal”, a collection of poems, written by Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai during the lockdown.

  • The governor has recently penned at least 13 books in English and Malayalam.
  • Two more books, ”Republic Day 2020” and ”Thus Speaks the Governor”, written by Pillai, were also released by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba through a video message.

Former WWE wrestler James ‘Kamala’ Harris passes away

Former WWE wrestler James Harris has died at age 70. He was also known as “Kamala”.

  • James Harris wrestled in the Mid-South, World Class Championship Wrestling, WCW and WWE. Harris began his career in wrestling under the tutelage of wrestler Bobo Brazil in 1984.
  • Kamala became a legend in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) era, during the mid-1980s and early 1990s.

World Biofuel Day

World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th of August to create awareness about the importance of non-fossil fuels as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlight the various efforts made by Government in the biofuel sector.

  • Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas organized the webinar with the theme “Biofuels towards Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
