Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched new Logo for ‘Ayurveda Aahar’
Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya launched the ‘Ayurveda Aahar’ logo on the occasion of World Food Safety Day on June 7.
- The Ayurveda Aahar Logo will allow for easy identification. Thus, it will help in creating a unique Identity of ‘Ayurveda Aahar’. The logo will also reinforce the quality of Ayurvedic products.
- As per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Ayurveda Aahar is food prepared in line with the recipes or ingredients or processes given in the authoritative books of Ayurveda.
Himachal Pradesh becomes the first Indian state to approve a policy for drones
The Himachal Pradesh government gave nod to a drone policy as it seeks to enable the use of drones and similar technology for different public services in the hill state.
- The ‘Himachal Pradesh Drone Policy 2022’ was approved by the chief minister Jai Ram Thakur. The policy envisions creating a holistic drone ecosystem built upon the foundation of Governance and Reforms Using Drones (GARUD).
- With this new drone policy, Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in the country to formally acknowledge the public use of drones.
Cabinet approves transfer of in-orbit communication satellites to NSIL for easing business in Space sector
The Union Cabinet approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from the Government of India to NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL), a Public Sector Enterprise under the administrative control of the Department of Space.
- According to the statement, this approval is expected to trigger domestic economic activity in the space sector and increase India’s share in the global space market.
- The Union Cabinet has also approved increasing the authorised share capital of NSIL from Rs 1,000 crore to Rs 7,500 crore.
Funding under DRDO scheme enhanced to Rs 50 crore per project
In a significant development, the Ministry of Defence has approved enhancement of funding under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme to Rs 50 crore per project from Rs 10 crore.
- The TDF scheme, executed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), supports the indigenous development of components, products, systems and technologies by MSMEs and start-ups.
- The TDF scheme aims to provide a major fillip to the defence manufacturing sector by encouraging the industry to innovate and develop defence technologies in order to place India on a self-reliance trajectory. The scheme facilitates up to 90 per cent of the total project cost and allows the industry to work in consortium with other industries/academia.

European Parliament votes to ban sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035 to fight climate change
Members of the European Parliament have voted to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. The move aims to step up the fight against climate change through the faster development of electric vehicles.
- The voting was held on an amendment that would have allowed some auto emissions from new vehicles after 2035, which was rejected by Members of Parliament.
- The European Union assembly voted in Strasbourg, France to require automakers to cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 100 percent by the middle of the next decade. The mandate would amount to a prohibition on the sale in the 27-nation EU of new cars powered by gasoline or diesel.
UN to grant humanitarian assistance of $48 million to Sri Lanka amid crisis
Amid the ongoing disastrous financial crisis with severe food, power and fuel shortages in Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament that the UN has planned to provide humanitarian assistance of around $48 million over a four-month period to the island nation’s food, agriculture and health sectors.
- Prime Minister further informed that he spoke with officials from the UN, Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Program (FP), UN Development Program and the World Health Organization.
Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland elected to the UNSC
Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland were elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term, and took over the horseshoe table from India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway on January 1, 2023. India has been at the vanguard of the 15-nation Council’s reform efforts for years.
- The newly elected members will take up their new responsibilities on Jan 1, 2023, and will serve till Dec 31, 2024.
- India’s two-year stint as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council will finish in December 2022, when it will simultaneously hold the Presidency of the powerful UN body.

Over 1.18 crore payment devices deployed across country till April: RBI data
More than 4.11 lakh PoS, mobile PoS and other physical devices were deployed across the country under the Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) scheme as on April 30, 2022, the RBI said.
- Besides, 1,14,05,116 digital devices, including inter-operable QR code-based payments such as UPI QR, Bharat QR, were deployed under the scheme.
- The PIDF scheme, operationalised by the Reserve Bank from January 2021, subsidises deployment of Points of Sale (PoS) infrastructure (physical and digital modes) in tier-3 to tier-6 centres and northeastern states of the country.

Tamil Nadu’s CM unveils the 44th Chess Olympiad’s logo, mascot
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin unveiled the mascot and the logo named ‘Thambi’ for FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai. ‘Thambi’ in Tamil means younger brother.
- The international event will be held at Mamallapuram near Chennai from 28th July to August 10.
- Over two thousand players from 186 countries will be taking part in the event. The biggest ever contingent from India is playing in this edition.

N J Ojha appointed as MGNREGA ombudsman
N J Ojha has been appointed as ombudsman for a two-year term under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
- Ojha has the power to investigate allegations by MGNREGA staff, consider them, award awards within 30 days of receipt of the complaint.
DD Director-General Mayank Kumar Agrawal given additional charge of Prasar Bharati CEO
The government gave additional charge as Prasar Bharati chief executive to Mayank Kumar Agrawal, currently serving as director general, news, at the Doordarshan.
- Agarwal’s appointment comes on the heels of Shashi Shekhar Vempati demitting office as Prasar Bharati CEO after completing his five-year tenure.
- As per the Prasar Bharati Act, a three-member search committee comprising the Vice President of India, chairman of Press Council of India, and the I&B secretary will identify the executive member of the Prasar Bharati board.
Panjab University alumnus Amandeep Singh Gill appointed as UN chief’s Envoy on Technology
Senior Indian diplomat Amandeep Singh Gill has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General as his envoy on technology, with the world body describing him as a “thought leader on digital technology” who has a solid understanding of how to leverage the digital transformation responsibly and inclusively for progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Gill, who was India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva from 2016-to 2018, is the chief executive officer of the International Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence Research Collaborative (I-DAIR) project, based at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva.

QS World University Rankings 2023 released
The QS World University Rankings 2023 was released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education think-tank and compilers of the world’s most-consulted university rankings portfolio.Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the top university in the world for the 11th consecutive year.
- Just like last year, the top-100 list doesn’t feature any Indian university, and this is for the sixth year straight that IISc Bengaluru (Rank 155), IIT Bombay (Rank 172) and IIT Delhi (Rank 174) are the only three Indian universities that bagged a spot amongst the top 200. IIT Bombay saw a big dip from Rank 117 last year to Rank 172 this year.
- For the 2023 edition, QS analysed a total of 2,462 institutions and ranked 1,422 institutions in the world — which is their largest pool till date. In the total list, 41 Indian universities got ranked, with only 27 in the top 1000, 3 in the top 200, and none in the top 100.

WHO awards PGI Chandigarh Centre for tobacco control
The World Health Organisation has awarded the Resource Centre for Tobacco Control (e-RCTC) of the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh with the Regional Director Special Recognition Award.
- The Resource Centre for Tobacco Control provides information related to tobacco control in India, including circulars and orders, policies and legislations, multidisciplinary publications.
- Besides being a resource hub, the centre has achieved heights in capacity building by organising more than 50 workshops and webinars for around 3,500 program managers and academicians.
Shreyas G. Hosur becomes the first Indian Railways officer to complete the gruelling ‘Ironman’ Triathlon
Creating a history of sorts, Shreyas G. Hosur, became the first officer from the Indian Railways to complete the gruelling ‘Ironman’ Triathlon, considered to be the toughest single-day sports event in the world.
- This event includes 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42.2 km of running.
- He completed the event in 13 hours and 26 minutes on 5th June 2022, in Hamburg, Germany. The finishers of the event are popularly known as ‘Ironman’ befitting the mental and physical strength the race demands.
Ramkrishna Mukkavilli becomes the first Indian to recognized by UNGC as Global SDG Pioneer
For the first time in the world, an Indian has been recognized by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as a Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Pioneer for Water Stewardship from India.
- The United Nations Global Compact had announced 10 new SDG Pioneers — business leaders who are doing an exceptional job to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the implementation of the UN Global Compact Ten Principles on human rights, environment, labor, and anti-corruption.
- Ramkrishna Mukkavilli, the Founder and Managing Director of Maithri Aquatech, a Make-In-India company, was previously selected as India’s SDG Pioneer by the UN Global Compact Network India (GCNI) earlier this year, for his work in building water security with nature-based water solutions across India and 27 countries spanning South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Following this, he was recognized as one of the 10 new SDG Pioneers for 2022.

NASA sets 2029 as tentative launch date for Venus mission
NASA is set to launch a mission called “DAVINCI Mission”. DAVINCI stands for “Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry and Imaging Mission”.
- The mission will fly by Venus and explore its harsh atmosphere in 2029. It will be the first mission to study Venus by means of both flybys and descent. Spacecraft is likely to explore layered Venusian atmosphere.
- It will reach Venusian surface by June 2031. The mission would capture data about Venus, that scientists are trying to measure since early 1980s.
China releases world’s most detailed map of the moon
China has released a new comprehensive geologic map of the moon, the “most detailed” to date, which is expected to make a vital contribution to scientific research, exploration and landing site selection on the Earth’s only natural satellite.
- Chinese scientists from multiple research institutes and universities have created the high resolution topographic map based on data from China’s lunar exploration Chang’e project and other data and research findings from international organisations.
- The map includes 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 rock types and 14 types of structures, providing abundant information about geology of the moon and its evolution. It is expected to make a great contribution to scientific research, exploration and landing site selection on the moon.
PM Narendra Modi inaugurates IN-SPACe in Ahmedabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the headquarters of the Indian National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-SPACe) in Ahmedabad. The PM was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the event.The project was approved by the Union Cabinet in June 2020.
- IN-SPACe will be the nodal agency, which will allow space activities and non-government private entities to use the Department of Space related facilities. Its aim will be to ensure maximum.
- It will also monitor the manufacturing, operation and control of spacecraft for registration as Indian Satellite and all the associated infrastructure for the same.
Polyversity – World’s Largest Educational Metaverse & Bharat Blockchain Network launched
Michigan, USA-based IT Services & IT Consulting company Information Data Systems (IDS) has unveiled the Bharat Blockchain Network (BBN) (Academic Blockchain Consortium) & Polyversity (Educational Metaverse). Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI) launched the initiatives in the presence of officials from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) at an event held at the AICTE Auditorium in New Delhi.
- IDS is building Bharat Blockchain Network (BBN)- India’s Nationwide hybrid blockchain Network visioned to enable blockchain projects of academic interest around Governance, Issuance of verifiable credentials, Skill badges, Student transfer & Audit Trail along the lines of NEP (National Education Policy) 2020.
- Polyversity, a virtual university, is India’s Largest Educational Metaverse, with over 100 Academic Partners establishing virtual campuses, including the AICTE’s campus.Land parcels will be assigned to academic partners in Polyversity.

Sony ex-CEO Nobuyuki Idei passes away
Nobuyuki Idei, who led Japan’s Sony from 1998 through 2005, steering its growth in the digital and entertainment businesses, has died, the company said. He was 84.
