NATIONAL NEWS

Centre approves creation of National Testing Agency

The Union Cabinet approved the creation of a National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct entrance examinations for higher educational institutions.

  • Its creation will relieve the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) – which conducts exams like the National Eligibilty-cum-Entrance Test – and the All India Council for Technical Education of the burden of conducting entrance tests.

India first to partner with Facebook on disaster response

At an event on disaster management, ‘India Disaster Response Summit’, Union minister Kiren Rijiju that India is the first country to partner with social networking site Facebook on disaster response. He further said, this partnership is a benchmark and first of its kind.

Rajnath Singh chairs second meeting of Island Development Agency

The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh chaired the second meeting of Island Development Agency (IDA) in New Delhi. The Island Development Agency reviewed the concept development plans and detailed master plans for holistic development of 09 islands (four in A&N Islands i.e. Smith, Ross, Long, Avis) and (five in Lakshadweep i.e. Minicoy, Bangaram, Thinnakara, Cheriyam, Suheli).  

  • IDA also decided to develop an airport at Minicoy Island to boost tourism and promote tuna fishing industry for improving livelihoods in Lakshadweep.

Environment ministry forms 7-member panel to find solutions to air pollution in Delhi-NCR

The Union environment ministry formed a seven-member committee headed by environment secretary, CK Mishra, to formulate short and long-term measures to solve the problem of air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.

  • The committee will ensure that the measures are implemented and the hotspots where pollution is a major problem are regularly surveyed to monitor the situation.

Govt triples home loan limit for central govt employees to Rs 25 lakh

The government has more than tripled the maximum amount that a central government employee can borrow from the government to Rs 25 lakh, from Rs 7.50 lakh earlier.

  • Revising the house building advance (HBA) rules incorporating the accepted recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission, the government also increased the amount that a central government employee can borrow for expansion of their homes to 34 months of basic pay to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh, from Rs 1.80 lakh earlier.

First power plant under PM Ladakh scheme commissioned in Drass

A 1.5 Mw small hydropower plant in Biaras Drass of Kargil in Jammu & Kashmir has become the first project to be commissioned under the Prime Minister’s Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative. The plant will power the Drass town in Kargil, which is one of the coldest places in India.

Indo-Bangla defense cooperation: Army training capsule in Patna

An army training capsule on counter-insurgency/ counter-terrorism operations will be conducted in Patna’s Danapur Cantonment from November 13 to December 10, as a part of the ongoing Indo-Bangladesh defense cooperation.

  • This training capsule is one of the major training events and defence cooperation endeavours between the two armies and will be first of its kind being organised for the Bangladesh Army at Danapur Cantonment.

China all set to make first contact with aliens

China, which on its way to emerge as a Space Superpower, has claimed be the first nation to make contact with alien life using the world’s largest radio dish.

  • According to reports, china has spent billions of pounds into space exploration and the world’s largest dish to detect alien signals coming from other galaxies.


APPOINTMENTS

K.J. Alphons elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

Union Minister of State for Tourism and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader K.J. Alphons Kannathanam was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan in the by-election for a vacant seat. The seat fell vacant after M. Venkaiah Naidu, elected as India’s Vice-President.

Debjani Ghosh set to be first woman President of Nasscom

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) named Debjani Ghosh as its President-Designate, who will succeed R Chandrashekhar after completion of his tenure in March next year. Ghosh, former managing director of Intel South Asia, will be the first woman President of Nasscom.

UNESCO confirms France’s Audrey Azoulay as new head

UNESCO member states confirmed the nomination of France’s former culture minister Audrey Azoulay to head the cultural agency. With this, Azoulay becomes UNESCO’s second woman director general.

UNHCR to get Mother Teresa Award 2017 for social justice

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been named as the recipient of the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice, 2017 as an acknowledgement of its exceptional work worldwide.
