NATIONAL NEWS

India’s first solar-based water supply project launched in Arunachal Pradesh
India’s first solar-based Integrated Multi-Village Water Supply Project (IMVWSP) was dedicated to the people of Arunachal Pradesh by Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

  • The solar-based lift water supply project for 39 villages in Lower Dibang Valley district in northeastern Arunachal Pradesh was commissioned at a cost of Rs 28.50 crore. 
  • The project is designed to provide drinking water to 17,480 people and has been conceived as an integrated project with an element of drinking water, green energy and tourism component in it.
  • He also launched the “Arunachal Jal Sankalp“, a state government dedicated flagship programme to supplement the Jal Jeevan Mission and to sustain the drinking water systems.

Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh to provide insurance cover against COVID-19 for it’s ‘Green Soldiers’
Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Arunachal Pradesh has become the first in the eight-State northeast to provide insurance cover against COVID-19 for “green soldiers”.

  • 57 frontline staffs of the Park have been insured for nine months against health issues due to infection by the Novel Coronavirus. The ‘Wildlife Trust of India’ (WTI), an NGO, paid the insurance amount with support from ‘Foundation Serge.
  • The insurance coverage is of Rs 1 lakh each; but a few who would be retiring soon have been insured for Rs 50,000. 

FASTags to be mandatory for all four wheelers from 1st January, 2021
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification making FASTags mandatory for all four wheel vehicles from 1st January 2021. This will apply to old vehicles as well as M and N category of motor vehicles sold before 1st December, 2017.

  • As per Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the FASTag had been made mandatory for all registration of new four wheeled Vehicles since 1st December 2017 and is being supplied by the Vehicle Manufacturer or their dealers. It had further been mandated that the renewal of fitness certificate will be done only after the fitment of FASTag for the Transport Vehicles. For National Permit Vehicles the fitment of FASTag has been mandated since 1st of October, 2019.
  • The Ministry said that a valid FASTag is also mandatory while getting a new third Party Insurance through an amendment in certificate of Insurance, wherein the details of FASTag ID will be captured. This will be applicable with effect from 1st of April 2021.

AIM-Sirius Innovation’ programme launched for Indian & Russian school children
Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Sirius, Russia, launched ‘AIM-Sirius Innovation Programme for Indian and Russian school children.

  • Over a two-week programme, from 7th to 21st of  November , 48 students and 16 educators and mentors will create 8 virtual products and mobile applications addressing global challenges across a range of areas like applied cognitive science, health and well-being,  and artificial intelligence.

Gorakhpur to host International Bird Festival in February 2021
International bird festival will be organized in Gorakhpur in the month of February. It will attract international tourists at Ramgarhtal Lake for bird watching.

  • The main focus of the government is eco-tourism, as there is a lot of potential for eco-tourism in Gorakhpur and the surrounding Terai region.
  • The Bird Festival is organized by the government, which will be certainly giving an uplift to eco-tourism in the area.

Kerala on top, Delhi near bottom in New Migrant Policy Index
The states of Kerala, Goa, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh have been most successful in integrating migrant workers, while crucial migrant receiving states, including Delhi, have done poorly, shows the Interstate Migrant Policy Index (IMPEX) that seeks to measure integration of interstate migrants.

  • India’s average IMPEX 2019 score for 28 states and the Union Territory of NCT Delhi is 37 out of 100, reflecting the limited attention paid to integration efforts in destination states.
  • The index has been developed by Mumbai-based research non-profit India Migration Now (IMN), and it assesses states’ performance on eight policy areas spanning.


APPOINTMENTS

Indian diplomat Vidisha Maitra elected to key United Nations committee
India’s Vidisha Maitra was elected to the UN body – Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ)  with strong support of the member states.

  • In the Group of Asia-Pacific States, Ms. Maitra, First Secretary in India’s Permanent Mission to the U.N., obtained 126 votes.
  • The 193-member General Assembly appoints members of the Advisory Committee. Members are selected on the basis of broad geographical representation, personal qualifications and experience.

West Indies Great Michael Holding Appointed MCC Foundation Patron
Former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding has been appointed as a new patron of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) Foundation.

  • The 66-year-old Holding is a passionate advocate for equality in cricket and the wider community.
  • Last month, actor, mental health advocate and cricket-lover Stephen Fry had joined the Foundation as a patron. The pair join the list which includes Claire Taylor, Mike Brearley, Mike Atherton, Mike Gatting.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

Virgin Hyperloop completes first-ever human trial in hyperloop pod in US
Virgin Hyperloop has “successfully” completed the first-ever human trial in the hyperloop pod at the DevLoop test facility in the US, where the company has previously run over 400 un-occupied tests.

  • Two passengers, both company staff, travelled 500 metres in 15 seconds, reaching 107 mph (172 km per hour), marking the completion of the first-ever trial.


OBITUARIES

Filmmaker Sudarshan Rattan passes away
Bollywood filmmaker Sudarshan Rattan passed away due to COVID-19. He was known for his 1986 film Manav Hatya, starring Madhuri Dixit and Shekhar Suman.

  • The late filmmaker had also written, directed and produced the 1996 action drama film Hahakaar, starring Sudhir Pandey, Shafi Inamdar, Neelima Azeem and Johny Lever and others.

Veteran author & Gujarati columnist Father Carlos Gonzalez Valles SJ passes away
Veteran author and Gujarati columnist of Father Carlos Gonzalez Valles SJ, popularly known as Father Valles passed away. He was 95.

  • A  Jesuit priest born in Spain, he was a Mathematics teacher in Gujarat. He wrote extensively in Gujarati, English and Spanish.
  • He translated many mathematical concepts into Gujarati and coined terms for them.

Ex-SPG officer pens novel on transgenders 
A new novel by an SPG officer involved in the prime minister”s security from 2000-07 looks at the lives, customs, rituals and struggle of transgenders.

  • Rasaathi: The Other Side of a Transgender” is Sasindran Kallinkeel”s debut novel. The book is published by BookMitra.
  • Kallinkeel was with the Central Reserve Police for 23 years and had a seven-year stint with the Special Protection Group (Prime Minister”s Security) as a senior security officer when Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh were in office.
