NATIONAL NEWS

MP becomes country’s top wheat procurer; farmers get Rs 25,000 crore boost
Madhya Pradesh is set to pump in around Rs 25,000 crore into its rural economy by the time its all-time high wheat procurement draws to a close. This has made the state the country’s largest wheat purchaser in 2020-21.

  • To date, the state procured around 12.77 million tonnes of wheat, which is expected to reach 13 million tonnes by the time the process ends in the next few weeks.
  • Punjab has closed its procurement for this year at 12.76 million tonnes

U’khand inaugurates its biggest biodiversity park in Haldwani
Uttarakhand forest department opened the first biodiversity park in Haldwani, which is the state’s biggest, on World Environment Day.

  •  The park named “Uttarakhand Forest Research Wing Biodiversity Park” spread across 18 acres
  • It has around 500 different plant species and over 40 sections that revolve around different environmental themes

Andhra CM launches ‘Jagananna Chedodu’ scheme for tailors, barbers and washermen
Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday launched ‘Jagananna Chedodu’- a financial scheme to provide assistance to the tailors, barbers and washermen.

  • Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy informed that Rs 10,000 was provided to 2.47 lakh beneficiaries by transferring a total amount of Rs 247 crores directly into their bank accounts under the unencumbered mode.
  • The Chief Minister further informed that ‘Vidya Deevena kit’ will be given to students once schools in the state will be reopened in August. Through this, the students will receive three pairs of uniforms, shoes, socks, books, and bags.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Bangladesh launches plasma network for COVID-19 treatment
The Bangladesh Government has launched an online network to facilitate plasma exchange between recovered patients of COVID 19 and those undergoing treatment for Corona infection in the country.

  • The initiative named ‘Shohojodha’ has been launched by the ICT division of the government of Bangladesh in collaboration with Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a2i innovation lab and eGeneration to facilitate collection and distribution of plasma from patients who have recovered from Coronavirus.

QS World University Rankings 2021: Only IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IISc make it to top 200 from India; MIT retains top spot
Only three Indian institutes have made it to the top 200 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking 2021. A number of other universities from the country, however, have slipped in the rankings list that was released recently.

  • As per the QS World University Ranking 2021, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is at 172nd position; Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is at 185th spot, while IIT Delhi is at 193.
  • The list shows IIT Madras at 275th position, IIT Kharagpur at 314th, IIT Kanpur at 350th, IIT Roorkee at 383rd, and IIT Guwahati at 470th.The University of Delhi is placed in the 501-510 bracket.
  • Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) USA continues to be at number one spot for the ninth consecutive year. Stanford University, Harvard University, and California Institute of Technology are at 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rank respectively


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India economy may contract by 7.3% in FY21 in case of second covid wave: OECD
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) pegged India’s growth at -3.7% for the ongoing fiscal with a rider that growth could drop further to -7.3% in the event of a second Covid-19 outbreak, according to its Economic Outlook (EO).

  • This was in sharp contrast to the 5.1% growth it had projected for FY21 in the interim EO in March. The latest report forecast a strong recovery in the coming fiscal to 7.9% in the ‘single-hit’ scenario versus an 8.1% rebound in the ‘double-hit’ scenario.

Former world champion boxer Oleksandr Gvozdyk retires
The former world light heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk has retired announced by his manager.

  • Gvozdyk won the WBC title in December 2018 when he knocked out Adonis Stevenson, who had held the belt for five years..
  • Gvozdyk retained the belt in his first title defense when Doudou Ngumbu suffered a leg injury, but lost it last year in a stoppage loss to Russian fighter Artur Beterbiev. That was Gvozdyk’s only loss of a 17-1 pro career.
  • Gvozdyk also won a bronze medal for in the light heavyweight category at the 2012 Olympics


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle Complex inaugurated at Visakhapatnam
The Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) Complex was inaugurated at Visakhapatnam by Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, PVSM, AVSM, VSM Flag Officer Commanding in Chief ENC . The DSRV Complex is designed to accommodate the newly inducted Submarine Rescue System with state of the art facilities to store the DSRV assets in a Rescue-Ready state.

  • The DSRV system consists of a Submarine Rescue Vessel, a Remote Operations Vehicle, Side Scan Sonar and associated equipment. It also has Diver Decompression Chambers and hyperbaric medical equipment to decompress submariners after being rescued from a sunken submarine. The DSRV system can be rapidly mobilised by air or road to facilitate submarine rescue operations even at distant locations.
  • The Indian Navy has inducted two such systems which will provide rescue cover to submarines on the West and East coast of India respectively. Currently, there are about 40 nations that operate submarines in the world out of which only a few have any form of submarine rescue capability.

Kerala Startup launches mask disposal smart bin & UV light-based disinfection device
VST Mobility Solutions, a Startup headquartered at Cochin, has launched an automated mask disposal machine as part of efforts to develop products helping to combat the Covid-19.

  • The disposal device, named BIN-19, developed Chitra UV based face mask disposal bin technology from the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum an institute of national importance under Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, was formally launched by Ernakulam District Collector S. Suhas by installing a unit at his office, the administrative headquarters of the district.
  • The IoT-based BIN-19 (Internet of Things) is used for collecting and disinfecting Used Face-Mask.

Shobha Sekhar conferred with “Medal of the Order of Australia”
Indian Musician & founder of Kalakruthi music organisation in Australia, Shobha Sekhar will be conferred the “Medal of the Order of Australia”.

  • The Montreal-based artiste and lecturer, University of Melbourne, figures in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List.
  • Tony Abbott, former Prime Minister of Australia and Michael Clark, cricketer, are among those nominated.


OBITUARIES

European Cup winner Tony Dunne passes away
Manchester United’s European Cup-winning defender Tony Dunne has died aged 78.

  • Dunne, who joined United from Irish club Shelbourne in 1960, made 535 appearances for Matt Busby’s side and played an integral role in their European Cup triumph in 1968.
  • He also won two league titles and an FA Cup during his 13-year stint with United

Former Planning Commission member Dr Vaidyanathan passes away 
Dr A Vaidyanathan, a former member of the Government of India’s Planning Commission, passed away in Coimbatore.

  • During his lifetime, Dr Vaidyanathan also served as professor at the Madras Institute of Development Studies and Centre for Development Studies in Trivandrum.
  • He chaired the Government of India Task Force on Revival of Cooperative Credit Institutions in 2004 and was a member of the K.N. Raj Committee on Taxation of Agricultural Income (1969-70).
  • From 1962 to 1972, Dr Vaidyanathan served as a member of the perspective planning division of the Planning Commission and worked closely with Pitambar Pant, during which period he had a stint at the Food and Agricultural Organisation in Rome.
  • After a term at the World Bank (1972-76), he returned home to join Professor K.N. Raj as a member of the faculty of Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. Dr Vaidyanathan was closely associated with state level planning in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

World Day Against Child Labour
The World Day against Child Labour, held every year on June 12, is intended to foster the worldwide movement against child labour in any of its forms.

  • This year’s theme focuses on the urgent need to protect children from under-age labour, especially in the world of Covid-19.
  • According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), there are about 152 million children globally who are engaged in child labour, 72 million of whom are in hazardous work. With the coronavirus pandemic set to lead the world into a recession, these children are now at an even greater risk of facing circumstances even more difficult and working longer hours.
