India’s first Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK) to be inaugurated in New Delhi
With an aim of taking ‘Khadi to newer places, a Centre for experimentation, innovation, and design has been conceived by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME) for Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC) to empower Khadi Institutions throughout the country.

  • The Centre has been envisaged to design apparel, home, and fashion accessories that appeal to people across generations. The Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK) has set out to make Khadi a universal, classic, and value-driven brand.

Lokpal to get permanent office at World Trade Centre in Delhi
The Lokpal of India will finally move into a swanky office at World Trade Centre in south Delhi’s Nauroji Nagar, four years after being appointed as the country’s first anti-corruption ombudsman to investigate complaints against public functionaries, including the Prime Minister, and almost a decade after the Act was passed by Parliament.

  • According to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the administrative Ministry for the Lokpal, the office, which spans two storeys and covers 59,504 square feet, was purchased for Rs 254.88 crore.

LS Speaker Om Birla launches Kalam website to encourage Vernacular Literature
Lok Sabha (LS) Speaker, Om Birla has launched the one-of-its-kind literary initiative Kalam website of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation (PKF) to support and encourage vernacular literature. The aim of Kalam is to popularize Hindi literature and provide a platform for veteran and young authors and poets to talk about their writings and love for vernacular literature.

  • Kalam is in sync with the philosophy of our nation – ‘Unity in Diversity’ which is reflected in the tagline of Prabha Khaitan Foundation – ‘Aapne Bhasha Aapne Log’.

Mumbai gets India’s first EV charging station powered by food waste
Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated the country’s first organic waste-powered EV charging station at Keshavrao Khadye road near Haji Ali in Mumbai.

  • The station, a first-of-its-kind, will generate 220 units of electricity from food waste collected from its nearby areas, mostly from bulk generators like hotels and offices. Along with powering street lights, this energy plant will now charge electric vehicles too.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

South Korea becomes first Asian member of NATO cyber research centre
South Korea has joined a cyber defense group under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), becoming its first Asian member country.

  • The National Intelligence Service (NIS) said that South Korea, along with Canada and Luxembourg, have been admitted into the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE), a think-tank based in Tallinn, Estonia, that supports member nations and NATO with interdisciplinary cyber defense research, training, and exercises.
  • The think-tank was established in 2008 by NATO members, on the initiative of Estonia, in response to the country suffering crippling cyberattacks allegedly committed by Russia.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Centre releases Rs 7,183.42 crore to 14 states as revenue deficit grant
The central government released Rs 7,183.42 crore as revenue deficit grant to 14 states including Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Punjab, Assam and Kerala.

  • The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance released the money. This is the 2nd monthly instalment of Post Devolution Revenue Deficit (PDRD) grant to states.

Mamata Banerjee honoured with Special Bangla Academy Award
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received the Bangla Academy Award for her “relentless literary pursuit”. The award, introduced this year by Sahitya Academy, was presented to Banerjee for her book “Kabita Bitan”, which pays tribute to the best writers of West Bengal.

  • The award will be given to those who constantly pursue literature even after working tirelessly in various other fields.
  • Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Kabita Bitan’ was launched at the 2020 Kolkata Book Fair. The book contains 946 poems written by the TMC supremo.


OBITUARIES

Yuri Averbakh, Chess’s First Centenarian Grandmaster, passes away 
Yuri Averbakh, a Russian chess grandmaster who was among the world’s best players for a decade, trained world champions and was the last surviving participant in one of the greatest competitions in history, passed away in Moscow. He was 100 — the first grandmaster ever to reach that age.
