Indian Railways will be the largest Railway in world to have 100 per cent electrification by 2030: Piyush Goyal
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has said that Indian Railways will be the largest Railway in the world to have 100 per cent electrification replacing diesel at the India Global Week-2020.

  • It will be the world’s first Green Railways running on 100 per cent clean energy by 2030.
  • The government has opened up for bidding for additional 151 trains inviting private participation so the passengers can enjoy world-class facilities and high speed journeys.

Chhattisgarh organises India’s first e-Lok Adalat
Amid the restricted judicial functioning owing to Covid-19 outbreak, an e-Lok Adalat held in Chhattisgarh to ensure the administration of justice continues where the virtual hearings are to be conducted through video conferencing.

  • The e-Lok Adalat intended to swiftly settle pendent cases is cited as the first such attempt in the country.

Jharkhand govt signs MoU with HDFC Bank for digital payment solutions
The Jharkhand government has signed a memorandum of understanding with private lender HDFC Bank to offer digital payment solutions to traffic violators.

  • The HDFC bank will provide digital payment solutions to the transport department of Jharkhand.
  • The traffic police will be equipped with POS machines to collect traffic- related penalties

Irdai removes Rs. 5 lakh cap on sum insured for Arogya Sanjeevani policies
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has allowed all general and health insurance companies to increase the sum insured on the standard health insurance product beyond ₹5 lakh with immediate effect

  • The standard product called Arogya Sanjeevani, which all insurers are mandated to offer had a cap of ₹5 lakh on the sum insured and the minimum cover one could opt for was of ₹1 lakh.
  • The regulator has now allowed insurers to offer sum insured as low as ₹50,000 with no upper limit. The sum insured has to be in multiples of ₹50,000.

Mastercard to invest Rs. 250 cr to help Indian SMEs amid COVID-19 crisis
Global leader in payment technology Mastercard announced an additional ₹250-crore investment to help small businesses in the country, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The investment, which is over and above the USD 1 billion committed for the Indian market till 2025, will be focussed on helping small businesses go digital.
  • The company has a target to equip 1 crore merchants in India with digital payment acceptance capabilities


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

US Remains India’s Top Trading Partner for Second Fiscal in 2019-20
The US remained India’s top trading partner for the second consecutive fiscal in 2019-20, which shows increasing economic ties between the two countries.

  • According to the data of the commerce ministry, in 2019-20, the bilateral trade between the US and India stood at USD 88.75 billion as against USD 87.96 billion in 2018-19.
  • The bilateral trade between India and China has dipped to USD 81.87 billion in 2019-20 from USD 87.08 billion in 2018-19. Trade deficit between the two neighbours have declined to USD 48.66 billion in 2019-20 from USD 53.57 billion in the previous fiscal.

Ficci Survey Estimates FY21 GDP Growth to be in Negative Territory
Industry body Ficci said its Economic Outlook Survey has projected the country’s annual median GDP growth for 2020-21 at (-) 4.5 per cent with a minimum and maximum growth estimate of (-) 6.4 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively for 2020-21.

  • With the rapid spread of COVID-19 pandemic manifesting into an economic and healthcare crisis globally, the latest forecast marks a sharp downward revision from the growth estimate of 5.5 per cent reported in the January 2020 survey.

India moves up a rank to become second-largest source of FDI for UK
According to new UK government figures, India invested in 120 projects and created 5,429 new jobs in the UK to become the second-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) after the US in 2019.

  • The Department for International Trade (DIT) inward investment statistics for 2019-2020 found India moving up from its previous third-largest spot, representing an overall 4 per cent FDI increase for the UK on 2018-2019 with 1,852 new inward investment projects in the 2019/2020 financial year.
  • The US remains the number one source of FDI for the UK, delivering 462 projects and 20,131 jobs, followed by India, Germany, France and China and Hong Kong. Australia and New Zealand were responsible for 72 projects and the Nordic and Baltic region 134, an increase for both regions.

Lewis Hamilton wins Styrian Grand Prix 2020
Lewis Hamilton started in pole position and held the lead throughout as he won Austria’s Styrian Grand Prix.

  • The six-time world champion finished ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas by nearly 14 seconds and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 33 in partly cloudy conditions a day after heavy rain in qualifying.

BCCI Accepts CEO Rahul Johri’s Resignation
Rahul Johri, the first chief executive of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), will step down by the end of this month after the board accepted his resignation.

  • Johri, who had joined the BCCI on June 1, 2016, had tendered his resignation in December last year. His five-year contract with the world’s richest cricket federation was to end only in May next year.

India’s 2018 Tiger census sets new Guinness World Record for being largest camera trap wildlife survey
The fourth cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018 has entered the Guinness World Record for being the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey informed by Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar.

  • The country now has an estimated 2967 tigers as per the latest census. With this number, India is home to nearly 75 percent of the global tiger population and has already fulfilled its resolve of doubling tiger numbers, made at St. Petersburg in 2010, well ahead of the target year of 2022.
  • The All India Tiger Estimation done quadrennially is steered by the National Tiger Conservation Authority with technical backstopping from the Wildlife Institute of India and implemented by State Forest Departments and partners.

TN Chief Minister Palaniswami honoured with Paul Harris Fellow
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International having its headquarters at Chicago, has honoured TN Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami with Paul Harris Fellow recognition. 

  • The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is accorded to honour people who render efficient services in providing drinking water, sanitation, prevention of diseases, environment, world peace etc., to its people.

Arunachal Pradesh’s filmmaker Kezang D Thongdok bags Dada Saheb Phalke Award 2020
Arunachal Pradesh filmmaker Kezang D Thongdok has bagged the Dada Saheb Phalke Award 2020 for a short documentary “Chi Lupo“.

  •  Chi Lupo, documented by Kezang D Thongdok is a short documentary on honey hunting.
  • Chi Lupo sketches the tradition of honey hunting practised in the Shertukpen community in which “Chi” means honey while “Lipo” means hunters.

NTPC Limited wins prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2019
National Thermal Power Corporation, NTPC Limited, a Central PSU under Ministry of Power has won the prestigious CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2019, under Outstanding Accomplishment in Corporate Excellence Category.

  • The company has also received Commendation for Significant Achievement in the category of CSR.
  • CII-ITC Sustainability Awards recognize and reward excellence in sustainability practices.

NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission launches app development module for school students
NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission has launched the ATL App Development Module for school children across the country.

  • The ATL App is an online course, which is completely Free. Through six project-based learning modules and online mentoring sessions, young innovators can learn to build mobile apps in various Indian languages and showcase their talent.
  • Additionally, to build capacities and acumen for app development within school teachers, periodic Teacher Training sessions will be conducted on the AIM App Development course.


OBITUARIES

Cartoonist Avad Bin Hassan Jami passes away
Renowned cartoonist Avad Bin Hassan Jami, popularly known as “Jami” passed away in Jamnagar. He was 77.

  • His cartoons regularly published in leading Gujarati daily newspapers and news magazines  “Abhiyan” for more than two decades.
  • He was a drawing teacher at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jamnagar and became a full-time cartoonist after retirement.

Ruskin Bond’s 70-yr literary journey captured in book ‘A Song of India’ to be released
A new book by beloved writer Ruskin Bond will shed light on his lesser known life before he became a successful author, publishers Puffin Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House India.

  • The illustrated book – “A Song of India“, scheduled to release on July 20, will mark the 70th year of Bond’s literary career.
  • Set in the year 1951, the book takes the reader back to Ruskin Bond’s last year in Dehradun, before he set sail for England to write and “chase his calling”. It was also the year that later became the basis for his first novel, “The Room on the Roof” (1956).

Counter-Terrorism Week
The Second Counter-Terrorism Week at the United Nations was observed from 29 June to 3 July 2020 at the UN Headquarters, New York.

  • This 2020 Counter-Terrorism Week was planned to include the Seventh Biennial Review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the first ever United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism, as well as the Second United Nations High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States.
  • The Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week will be held from 6-10 July and convened under the overarching theme of “Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment”
