Centre allocates Rs 3,323 crore grant to Odisha under Jal Jeevan Mission
The Centre has allocated 3,323 crore rupees grant to Odisha under the Jal Jeevan Mission for the current financial year to provide tap water supply to every households.

  • Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has assured full assistance to the State for making provision of tap water supply in every rural household.

ICCR to set up a Bangabandhu Chair at Delhi University
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will set up a ‘Bangabandhu Chair’ at Delhi University.

  • The Chair will focus on better understanding of developments in Bangladesh which is one of India’s most important neighbours as it is positioned at the strategic intersection of India’s Neighbourhood First and Act East policies.

India’s first cryptogamic garden opens in Dehradun
India’s first cryptogamic garden housing nearly 50 species of lichens, ferns and fungi was inaugurated in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district’s Chakrata town.

  • Around 50 species have been grown in the garden at Deoban in Chakrata at a commanding height of 9,000 ft.

Assam govt to create new department to protect indigenous faith, culture
The Assam cabinet decided to create a new department to protect the culture and practices of people belonging to tribal and other indigenous communities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

  • The new department, would ensure that the state’s indigenous population gets to preserve their faith and traditions, while also providing requisite support to them.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Nepal Signs USD 1.3 Bn Mega Deal with India’s SJVN to Develop 679 MW Lower Arun Hydropower Project
Nepal has signed a USD 1.3 billion deal with India’s hydro power major Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) to develop a 679-megawatt hydropower project in eastern Nepal, the second mega venture undertaken by India in the neighbouring Himalayan nation.

  • The single largest foreign investment project, based on the 2017 cost estimates, is located between Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur districts in eastern Nepal.
  • The 679-megawatt Lower Arun Hydropower project is the second mega project undertaken by India after the USD 1.04 billion 900-MW Arun-3 hydroelectric project.

IATA launches global action group to improve handling of mobility aids
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a global Mobility Aids Action Group to examine and improve the transport journey of mobility aids, including wheelchairs, with the objective of improving the handling of this vital equipment for travelers with disabilities.

  • The action group will be the first of its kind aimed at tackling issues around the safe and secure transport of mobility aids—an issue of huge importance to a growing number of travelers.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI accepts cut-off yield on new 10-year bond at 6.10%
The Reserve Bank of India announced the cut-off yield for the new 10-year bond at 6.10% per annum, higher than that of the current benchmark, signalling a slight tolerance for a higher yield after months of trying to keep it at 6% or less. 

  • RBI sold ₹14,000 crore of the new 2031 bond as part of the ₹26,000 crore planned weekly government security auction. The central bank also sold ₹3,000 crore of 2023 bonds at 4.3% and ₹9,000 crore of 2061 bonds at 7.18%.

Pan-India integration for industrial land bank by December: Commerce Ministry
The India Industrial Land Bank will achieve pan-India integration by December 2021, said Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

  • The system has been integrated with industry-based GIS systems of 17 states so that details can be updated on the portal on a real-time basis, the ministry further added.

KVIC secures trademark registrations in Bhutan, UAE, Mexico
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has recently secured trademark registrations in three countries namely Bhutan, UAE and Mexico which is a big stride towards protecting the identity of brand Khadi globally.

  • Apart from these countries, KVIC’s trademark applications are pending in 40 countries across the world that include the USA, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Japan, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brazil and others.

Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah announced retirement from test Cricket
Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from Test cricket in the middle of the ongoing one-off game against Zimbabwe.

  • Mahmudullah made his Test debut in 2009 during Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies.
  • The right-handed batsman in 50 matches and 94 innings has scored 2914 runs at an average of 33.49.

Haryana to organise ‘Khelo India Youth Games, 2021’ in February 2022
The Haryana government applied brakes on its earlier decision to hold Khelo India Youth Games-2021 in November-December and has now decided to organise the sports show in February 2022, in view of the possible third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

  • The state government had announced to hold fourth edition of the Youth Games in Panchkula, Ambala, Shahabad, Delhi and Chandigarh from November 21 to December 5. Various sports activities in the under-18 category will be held in the Games.
  • The government had also announced that BRICS Games-2021 will be organised during Khelo India.

Indian-origin player Samir Banerjee wins Wimbledon Boys’ singles title
Indian-American tennis player Samir Banerjee, 17, has won the Wimbledon Boys’ singles title.

  • He defeated Victor Lilov of the USA 7-5, 6-3 to win the title in the final, which lasted one hour and 22 minutes.
  • The last time an Indian player won a singles junior Grand Slam title was when Yuki Bhambri (2009 Australian Open).

Pawan Singh becomes first Indian Shooting Jury to get selected for Olympics
Pawan Singh, the Joint Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), has been selected as the first ever Indian juror for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

  • Singh is a resident of Pune and is founder-director of the Gun For Glory Shooting Academy in Balewadi.

Ecclestone, Conway win ICC Player of the Month Award
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone edged out India’s teen batting sensation Shafali Verma and all-rounder Sneh Rana to become the ICC Player of the Month for June, while New Zealand opener Devon Conway bagged the honour in the men’s category.

  • Left-arm spinner Ecclestone thus became the second English female to win the award after Tammy Beaumont, who was crowned in February.

Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Gupta launched NAMO app drive for its wider reach to the people who would be able to convey their issues or problems directly to the Prime Minister Narender Modi.

  • Initially, the target is to reach 10 lakh people through this app.
  • The aim of the app is to connect with people directly and get to know about their problems and try to get them redressed.


OBITUARIES

Popular Mimicrywz Artist-actor Madhav Moghe passes away
Actor and mimicry artist Madhav Moghe, who was known for his roles in Partner and Damini, took his last breath. He was 68.

  • Moghe was known for his mimicry, especially that of late star Sanjeev Kapoor. His spoof of Kapoor’s iconic character Thakur from ‘Sholay’ was widely popular.
  • The actor’s earliest film appearances were in Rajkumar Santoshi’s ‘Damini’ (1993) and ‘Ghatak’ (1996). He also featured in the 2005 comedy-romance ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’.

Doyen of Ayurveda Dr P K Warrier passes away 
Dr P K Warrier, who popularised Ayurveda, died in Kerala’s Kottakal, a month after celebrating his 100th birthday on June 8.

  • Decorated with the country’s third and fourth highest civilian awards -Padma Bhushan in 2010 and Padma Shri in 1999 – Warrier was also a freedom fighter. He was known as a connoisseur of arts, an author and a teacher.

Former Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma passes away
Former Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, passed away due to cardiac arrest. He was 66.

  • A middle order batsman, Sharma represented India in 37 Test matches and 42 one-day internationals.
  • He was an important member of Kapil Dev’s side that won the World Cup in England in 1983. Sharma was India’s second highest scorer behind Kapil Dev in the tournament, piling up 240 runs in 8 innings with two half centuries to his kitty.

Kashi Annapurna Temple Mahant Rameshwar Puri passes away 
The mahant of Kashi Annapurna Math Mandir, Rameshwar Puri passed away at a private hospital in the city. He was 67.

  • Rameshwar Puri was appointed Mahant of Shri Annapurna Math temple after the death of the then Mahant Tribhuvan Puri in 2004.
  • Under his guidance, the Kashi Annapurna Anna Kshetra Trust continuously expanded its social service.

  • The theme for World Population Day 2021 is “Rights and Choices are the Answer: Whether baby boom or bust, the solution to shifting fertility rates lies in prioritising all people’s reproductive health and rights.”
