India hosts first conference on military medicine for SCO member nations

India hosted the first conference on military medicine for member nations of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation in New Delhi. The two-day conference was being held with an aim to share best practices in the field of military medicine. This was the first military co-operation event to be organised in the country under the SCO after it joined the organisation in 2017.

India joins global antimicrobial resistance research hub

India has joined the Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research and Development (R & D) hub as a new member. This would expand the global partnership working to address challenges and improve coordination and collaboration in global AMR research and development to 16 countries, the European Commission, two philanthropic foundations and four international organisations as observers.

  • AMR is the ability of a microbe to resist the effects of medication that once could successfully treat the microbe.

Haryana CM launches two insurance schemes for traders

Haryana government launched two insurance schemes for registered small and medium traders in an apparent bid to woo voters.

  • Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched “Mukhyamantri Vyapari Samuhik Niji Durghatna Beema Yojana” and “Mukhyamantri Vyapari Kshatipurti Beema Yojana”. He said an insurance cover of ₹5 lakh would be provided under the Durghatna Yojana and from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh under the other scheme.
  • The Chief Minister said Haryana was the first State to implement the Kshatipurti Yojana, under which insurance benefits ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh would be provided to the traders on the basis of their turnover to compensate the loss of their stock caused due to fire, theft, flood and earthquake and damage to furniture and other goods.

Families with annual income upto Rs 1.80 lakh will get Ayushman Bharat cards: Haryana Govt

The Haryana government has decided to make Ayushman Bharat card for the families having an annual income of upto Rs 1.80 lakh under the centre’s flagship health scheme “Ayushman Bharat Yojana”.

  • Ayushman Bharat gives benefit cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year. Benefits of the scheme are portable across the country and a beneficiary covered under the scheme is allowed to take cashless benefits from any public/private empanelled hospitals across the country.

National Conference on “Criminal Activities and Radicalization in Jails” held

Bureau of Police research and development will organize the National Conference on “Criminal Activities and Radicalization in Jails: Vulnerability of Inmates and Jail Staff and their Protection” in New Delhi. The conference aims to provide a platform for the prison personnel of all ranks at the national level to share their candid views on various operational as well as administrative issues.

Two new species of ginger discovered from Nagaland

Scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have discovered two new species of Zingiber, commonly referred to as ginger, from Nagaland. While Zingiber perenense has been discovered from the Peren district of Nagaland, Zingiber dimapurense was found in the Dimapur district of the State.

DRDO hands over second ‘Netra’ early warning system to IAF

The Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) handed over the second airborne warning plane, Netra, to the Indian Air Force. The Netra, an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEWC) aircraft, had played a stellar role during the Balakot air strikes that had been carried out by the IAF in February this year. It provided surveillance and radar coverage to the five Mirage jets that bombed terror launch pads in Balakot in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan.

Thailand 1st in Asia to roll out plain cigarette packaging

Thailand rolled out plain cigarette packaging, the first country in Asia to introduce what activists say is an effective way to reduce the appeal of smoking. In 2012, Australia became the first country to require tobacco products to be sold without colourful brand logos.

Largest flying animal in history identified: study

Scientists unveiled a new species of pterosaur, the plane-sized reptiles that lorded over primeval skies above T-rex, Triceratops and other dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous.

  • With a wingspan of 10 m and weighing 250 kg, Cryodrakon boreas rivals another pterosaur as the largest flying animal of all time, researchers reported in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Sri Lanka flags off Pulathisi Express, a ‘Make In India’ train

Sri Lanka has flagged off Pulathisi Express, train to Polonnaruwa from Colombo Fort Railway station, a newly ‘Make In India’ train rake.

  • The train which has been inducted under an Indian Line of Credit has an on-board entertainment system, modular interiors and fully-rotating seats in Air Conditioned Chair cars for passenger comfort.

Water found for first time on potentially habitable exoplanet

In an “incredibly exciting” finding, astronomers have for the first time discovered water in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting a distant star outside our solar system with Earth-like temperatures that could support life.

  • K2-18b, which is eight times the mass of Earth, is now the only exoplanet known to have both water and temperatures that could be potentially habitable.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

IFC collaborates with FIDC for training NBFCs

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Finance Industry Development Council (FIDC), a representative body of asset and loan Financing NBFCs, to collaborate on training of NBFCs in the country.

  • These training programs would be conducted at various centers across the country under the guidance of leading consultants from the World Bank Group.

Senior Women’s National Football Championship kicks off

The 25th Senior Women’s National Football Championship kicked off at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh. 30 teams are participating in the 15-day event.

UN chief appoints Indian Army veteran Abhijit Guha as head of Hodeidah mission

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Lieutenant General (Retired) Abhijit Guha as the head of the UN mission in Hodeidah, Yemen.

  • Besides leading the UN Mission in support of the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), Guha will also assume the chair of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC), tasked with redeploying forces of the Yemeni warring parties in accordance with their agreement.

Tongan PM Akilisi Pohiva, a pro-democracy and climate change campaigner, has passed away at the age of 78.
