Narendra Singh Tomar launches SahakarMitra: Scheme on Internship Programme
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched Sahakar Mitra Internship programme to provide paid internship to youth and ensure availability of assured project loans to young cooperators.

  • Sahakar Mitra Scheme will provide the young professionals an opportunity of practical exposure and learning from the working of NCDC and cooperatives as a paid intern.
  • Under the scheme, professionals in disciplines including Agriculture and allied areas, IT, Agri-business, Cooperation, Finance, International Trade, Forestry, Rural Development, Project Management will be eligible for the paid internship.
  •  Each intern will get financial support over the 4 months internship period for which the online application is available on NCDC website.

Indian Railways sets world record by running first Double Stack Container Train in electrified Territory
Railways created a new world benchmark by successfully running first Double Stack Container Train in high rise Over Head Equipment (OHE) electrified from Palanpur and Botad stations in Gujarat. 

  • This achievement is a first of its kind in the entire world and will also boost the ambitious mission of Green India as a latest green initiative over Indian Railways

Oil Ministry sets up high-level panel to inquire into Assam oil well disaster
The Petroleum Ministry has constituted a three-member high-level committee to inquire into the blowout at an Oil India Ltd well in Assam and the subsequent fire that killed two firefighters and injured at least one.

  • The panel will be headed by SCL Das, Director General of Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH). The panel, which also includes former ONGC chairman B C Bora and former ONGC director T K Sengupta, will submit its report within one month.
  • It will identify the lapses in following laid down protocols and procedures which led to the incident.

Maharashtra renames its environment ministry as ‘Environment and Climate Change Ministry’
A week after being hit by Cyclone Nisarga, Maharashtra has renamed its Environment Ministry as Environment and Climate Change Ministry. 

  • The department, which is handled by Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray, thank his cabinet for approving the proposal, stating that this move will help the department to play an active role in climate change mitigation.

India Rankings-2020 for Higher Educational Institutions released; IIT Madras retains first position in overall ranking
Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank virtually released India Rankings-2020 for Higher Educational Institutions in New Delhi

  • IIT, Madras retains first position in Overall Ranking as well as in Engineering.
  • Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru tops the University list.
  • IIM, Ahmedabad tops in Management Category and AIIMS occupies the top slot in Medical category for third consecutive year.
  • Miranda College retains first position amongst colleges for third consecutive year Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi secures first position in Dental category. Dental institutions included for first time in India Rankings-2020 .

India-ASEAN Youth Dialogue 2020 held online
The 3rd India-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) youth dialogue 2020 was held virtually and focusing on coronavirus pandemic.

  • The meet has regarded the youth as “vehicles of change” who are playing a pivotal role by leading the fight against the pandemic.
  • During the dialogue, India and ASEAN enhanced cooperation constructively in skill development, youthful energy and education. These areas were identified as strategic partnership between the two countries at the dialogue.

Mumbai most expensive city in India for expats, ranks 19th in Asia: Survey
According to Mercer’s ‘2020 Cost of Living Survey’, India’s financial capital Mumbai has emerged as the most expensive city in the country for expatriates in terms of cost of living. Mumbai is the 60th most expensive city for expatriates globally, while it ranks 19th in Asia. 

  • Mumbai is the most expensive among Indian cities surveyed, followed by New Delhi (101st globally) and Chennai (143rd globally). Bengaluru (171) and Kolkata (185) are the least expensive Indian cities in the rankings.
  • The global list was topped by Hong Kong, followed by Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) in second position. Japan’s Tokyo and Switzerland’s Zurich remain in the third and fourth positions, respectively.


BANKING & FINANCE

Govt infuses Rs 5,298 cr into IIFCL to boost infrastructure spending
India Infrastructure Finance Company (IIFCL) said the government infused equity share capital of Rs 5,297.60 crore in the company on March 30.

  • This infusion has increased the paid-up equity share capital of IIFCL to Rs 9,999.92 crore against the authorized share capital of Rs 10,000 crore.
  • The increased paid-up equity share capital enables IIFCL to create requisite headroom to provide finance to more number of infrastructure projects in the country.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

S&P’s retains India’s sovereign rating at “BBB-” with stable outlook
S&P retained India’s sovereign rating at “BBB-” with a stable outlook, saying that while risks to growth are rising, the economy and fiscal position will stabilise and begin to recover from 2021 onwards.

  • The stable outlook reflects that India’s economy will recover following the containment of COVID-19 pandemic and the country will maintain its sound net external position.
  • The stable outlook also assumes that the government’s fiscal deficit will recede markedly following a multi-year high in fiscal year 2021.

Former astronaut becomes first person to visit both space and the deepest place in the ocean
Kathy Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space achieves another record after 25 years becoming the first woman to reach the ocean’s deepest point.

  •  Only 8 people across the world have reached the deepest point in Earth’s seabed hydrosphere and nearly 550 people have visited the space.But, Kathy becomes the first and the only person to both.
  • The NASA Astronaut and Oceanographer, Kathy Sullivan emerged from her 35,810-foot dive to the Challenger Deep, which is the deepest known point in the ocean, as part of the Ring of Fire Expedition. The event was organised by the EYOS Expeditions.

Indian-American soil scientist Rattan Lal gets 2020 World Food Prize
Eminent Indian-American soil scientist Rattan Lal has been named this year’s recipient of the World Food Prize for developing and mainstreaming a soil-centric approach to increasing food production that conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change.

  • Lal, a native of India and a citizen of the United States, will receive the 2.5 lakh dollar award that honours his contribution throughout his career spanning more than five decades and four continents to promote innovative soil-saving techniques that benefit the livelihoods of more than 500 million smallholder farmers, improve the food and nutritional security of more than two billion people and saves hundreds of millions of hectares of natural tropical ecosystems.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

GRSE delivers fifth ship in Fast Patrol Vessels’ series to Indian Coast Guard
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) delivered ICGS Kanaklata Barua, the fifth and final ship in the series of Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard.

  • This is the 105th vessel delivered by the Defence PSU shipyard based on the banks of river Hooghly.
  • The fast patrol vessels, can achieve speeds exceeding 34 knots with an endurance of more than 1,500 nautical miles. 
  •  Fitted with 40/60 mm gun as main armament, these ships have improved habitability features with fully air-conditioned modular accomodation for 35 personnel.


ENVIRONMENT

Population of Gir lions rises by 29%
The number of Asiatic lions in the Gir forest region has increased by 29 per cent to 674, the Gujarat forest department.

  • The department carried out a `population estimation exercise’ on the night of June 5 and 6 when there was full moon.
  • The exercise was undertaken as the five yearly census could not be carried out in May due to the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown.


OBITUARIES

‘This is Us’ writer Jas Waters passes away
Television writer Jas Waters, who worked on the hit NBC family drama “This Is Us“, has died at the age of 39.

  • Waters worked in film production and television development on many projects including the Barbershop franchise, Hard Ball, Save the Last Dance, MTV’s The Real World, ER and Spiderman 1 and 2
  • Waters’ also worked on “Kidding“, the Showtime comedy drama series, starring Hollywood star Jim Carrey.

SAIL director Atul Srivastava passes away
Atul Srivastava, Director (Personnel), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) passed away at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi following a cardiac arrest.

  • Srivastava assumed charge as Director (Personnel) of SAIL on March 12, 2018. In his long-standing career spanning more than 35 years at SAIL, he had served in the the Human Resources department of the company, while working at various SAIL Plants as well as at the Corporate Office.
