UGC constitutes 2 expert committees for examination & online education: COVID-19
The two committees set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the new academic calendar and examination and for the promotion of online education respectively are likely to submit their report by the end of this week.

  • The seven-member committee on the alternative academic calendar and examination is being headed by the RC Kuhad, Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Haryana.
  • Nageshwar Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is heading the committee on pooling e-resources and enhancing online education systems.

AIM, NITI Aayog & NIC jointly launches CollabCAD in ATL schools
Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog and National Informatics Centre (NIC) jointly launched CollabCAD, a collaborative network, computer enabled software system, providing a total engineering solution from 2D drafting & detailing to 3D product design.

  • The aim of this initiative is to provide a great platform to students of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across country to create and modify 3d designs with free flow of creativity and imagination.
  •  This software would also enable students to create data across the network and concurrently access the same design data for storage and visualization.

UNIDO and CUTS look to e-commerce to counter economic impact of COVD-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted and impacted the daily lives of people and hampered economic activities in many countries across the world. The coronavirus’s continuing spread requires global stakeholders to collaborate, support each other and find innovative solutions together in order to address the core challenges that countries are experiencing.

  • The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) have signed an agreement to empower consumers to contribute to the global development agenda as well as support their respective governments in times of global crisis.


BANKING & FINANCE

ADB triples financial aid to fight Covid-19 to USD 20 billion
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it has tripled the size of its Covid-19 response package for its member nations to USD 20 billion.

  • The multilateral funding agency said it has also approved measures to streamline its operations for quicker and more flexible delivery of assistance.
  • The package expands ADB’s USD6.5 billion initial response announced on March 18, adding USD 13.5 billion in resources to help its developing member countries counter the severe macroeconomic and health impacts caused by Covid-19.

Yes Bank extends bancassurance tie-up with Max Life Insurance for 5 years
Private sector life insurer Max Life Insurance said Yes Bank has extended the bancassurance partnership for next 5 years.

  • Under the partnership, the products of the life insurer would be sold through the branches of Yes Bank.
  • Building on the 15-year partnership, the two firms remain committed to offering their customers a broad range of need-based products and services, deploying technology across the customer value chain to further enhance efficiencies and leveraging existing ecosystems to facilitate superior experiences for their customers.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

World Bank sees FY21 India growth at 1.5-2.8 pc — slowest since economic reforms three decades back
According to the World Bank, India is likely to record its worst growth performance since the 1991 liberalisation this fiscal year as the coronavirus outbreak severely disrupts the economy.

  • India’s economy is expected to grow 1.5 per cent to 2.8 per cent in the 2020-21 fiscal which started on April 1, the World Bank said in its South Asia Economic Focus report.
  • It estimated India will grow 4.8 per cent to 5 per cent in the 2019-20 fiscal that ended on March 31.

Global Trade to fall by 13%-32% in 2020 due to COVID-19: WTO
Global trade is expected to fall by 13-32 per cent in 2020 as the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic disrupts economic activity and life around the world, the World Trade Organization (WTO) said in a recent report.

  •  The current slump will prove to be biggest of a generation, bigger than the global financial crisis of 2008-09, WTO said in its Annual Trade Statistics and Outlook Report.
  •  The report also pointed out that in 2019, 1.7 per cent of world exports originated from India, while 2.5 per cent of imports reached the country.

India to host Asian Boxing Championships 2020 in Nov-Dec: BFI
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has said it will host the Asian Boxing Championships for men and women in November-December, factoring India would have controlled the coronavirus outbreak by then.

  • India last hosted the men’s Asian meet back in 1980 in Mumbai, while it conducted the women’s event in 2003 in Hisar. The tournament became a combined event for men and women in 2019.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

CovidGyan, science communication initiative launched
A multi-institutional, multi-lingual science communication initiative, called `CovidGyan’ has been created to bring the scientific and factual aspects of this pandemic outbreak on to public domain.

  • The initiative is the brainchild of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and Tata Memorial Centre (TMC).
  • A website named ‘CovidGyan’ was also launched under this initiative.


OBITUARIES

Father of modern Iraqi architecture Rifat Chadirji passes away
Rifat Chadirji, a man often referred to as the father of modern Iraqi architecture, has died after contracting coronavirus.

  • The 93-year-old architect and photographer is credited with designing some of Iraq’s most well-known structures, including the iconic “Freedom Monument” in the now protest hub of Baghdad’s Tahrir Square its name.

Former Attorney General of India Ashok Desai passes away
Former Attorney General of India and senior advocate Ashok Desai passed away. He was 78.

  • A Padma Bhushan awardee, Desai held office as the Attorney General of India from July 9, 1996 to May 6, 1998.
  • Earlier, he was the Solicitor General of India from 18 December, 1989 to December 2, 1990.

Congress leader Shri Krishan Hooda passed away
Congress MLA Shri Krishan Hooda died after a prolonged illness. He was 75.

  • The legislator from Baroda constituency in Sonipat district of Haryana defeated BJP’s wrestler-turned politician Yogeshwar Dutt from the Baroda assembly seat in the 2019 elections.

Noted Freedom Fighter Sachchidanand Painuli passes away
Noted freedom fighter Sachchidanand Painuli passed away at his Ganganagar residence. He was 92.

  • Painuli is remembered for his role in the freedom movement and the Tehri Jankranti. He was also well known for his oratorical skills.

Veteran Cong leader Rajasekharan passes away
Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister M V Rajasekharan passed away at a hospital in Bengaluru after prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 91.

  • He represented Kanakapura constituency in Lok Sabha. He was known for value-based politics and had served as the Union minister of state of planning and statistics.
