National Centre for Divyang Empowerment inaugurated at CRPF Group Centre in Hakimpet near Hyderabad
Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy has inaugurated the National Centre for Divyang Empowerment at the CRPF Group Centre in Hakimpet near Hyderabad.

  • This is first of its kind establishment to re-skill and rehabilitate the Divyang Warriors of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) who suffered life threatening injuries in line of duty.

Maharashtra govt all set to launch ‘MahaSharad’ platform
Maharashtra’s Department of Social Justice is all set to launch an ambitious scheme for distribution of assistive devices to lakhs of persons with disabilities through MahaSharad Digital Platform to coincide with NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s 80th birthday. It will be available on Play Store by March 2021.

  • Maharashtra System for Health and Rehabilitation Assistance” or MahaSharad platform has been created to provide various devices to persons with disabilities free of cost through the Commissionerate for persons with Disability.
  • Modern equipment and devices help divyang to lead life like normal individuals. Several people, organizations, private companies, industrialists and others are willing to make available such equipment for divyang. The MahaSharad platform will help such donors meet needy divyang. Those in need can start registering on the portal from today itself.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

WHO, IFRC sign memorandum of understanding on emergency medical teams
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and IFRC Secretary-General Mr Jagan Chapagain signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on implementing the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) initiative.

  • The MoU, also known as the Red Channel Agreement, is the culmination of years of collaboration between IFRC and the WHO Emergency Medical Team Initiative.
  • The new agreement will bring more synergies to health emergency response between the two international organisations, particularly in technical standards, accountability, and coordination.

Swadhinata Sarak’ between Bangladesh and India will be opened on March 26 Next year- Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Momen
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen has said that the ‘Swadhinata Sarak’ between Bangladesh and India will be opened on 26 March next year. The road remains functional on the Indian side while it will be connected through Mujibnagar, Meherpur district in Bangladesh.

  • He also said that Chilahati-Haldirbari rail link which was active till 1965 will be inaugurated during the summit meeting between the two Prime Ministers on December 17.

RBI to Set Up Automated Banknote Processing Centre in Jaipur
With a view to effectively deal with increasing circulation of banknotes, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to set up an Automated Banknote Processing Centre (ABPC) in Jaipur for receipt, storage and dispatch of currency notes.

  • The functions of the ABPC will also include processing of banknotes received from currency chests (CCs) and bank branches, and destruction of soiled banknotes in an automated manner.

BSE launches e-agricultural spot market platform
Diversified exchange BSE has launched an electronic spot platform for agricultural commodities – “BSE E-Agricultural Markets Ltd. (BEAM)” – through its subsidiary BSE Investments.

  • Accordingly, the platform functions as a “national level, institutionalised, electronic, transparent commodity spot trading platform in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to create a “single market”.
  • “The platform facilitates spot agricultural commodities transactions across value chain consisting of producers, intermediaries, ancillary services and consumers. The platform will commence beta operations effective from December 11, 2020.

Ankita Raina Wins ITF Doubles Title in Dubai with Ekaterine Gorgodze
Top Indian tennis player Ankita Raina won her third doubles title of the pandemic-hit 2020 season, clinching the Al Habtoor challenge with Ekaterine Gorgodze

  • The unseeded Indo-Georgian pair won 6-4 3-6 10-6 against Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov from Spain and Slovakian Kaja Juvan in the final of the USD 100,000 hard court event.
  • It was the fourth doubles final of the season for Ankita but the biggest trophy of the calender since her earlier two titles were at the USD 25,000 level.

Max Verstappen wins season-ending Abu Dhabi GP
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in dominant style for his second victory of the season and 10th of his career.

  • He finished 16 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas and 18.4 clear of world champion Lewis Hamilton as Red Bull enjoyed a rare and significant success over both Mercedes cars.
  • Alexander Albon completed a good race for Red Bull by finishing fourth ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Ashraf Patel named Social Entrepreneur of the year
Many NGOs and social workers are working tirelessly during the COVID 19 pandemic. Ashraf Patel is one such person who has recently won the Social Entrepreneur of the Year award instituted by the Schwab Foundation and Jubilant Bhartia Foundation.

  • The award was presented by Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development and Textiles at a virtual ceremony.
  • Ashraf Patel is the co-founder of Pravah and ComMutiny Youth Collective. In partnership with UNICEF ROSA, they developed an appreciative enquiry tool to assess the impact of COVID 19 on the lives of adolescents in 8 South Asian countries.

UNESCO to launch international prize in the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib
The UNESCO has decided to launch an international prize in the field of ‘creative economy’ in the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

  • Starting November 2021, the dollar 50 thousand award will be given away once in two years for global economic initiatives of the youth.
  • UNESCO has declared 2021 as ‘International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’.
  • Currently, there are 23 UNESCO International Awards in the name of international celebrities and organisations.


OBITUARIES

Bannanje Govindacharya, Sanskrit scholar and Padma Shri awardee, passes away
Renowned Sanskrit scholar Vidyavachaspati Bannanje Govindacharya passed away due to age-related ailments at his residence at Ambalpady in Karnataka’s Udupi district. He is 84.

  • A Padma Shri awardee, he had edited the weekly magazine of Kannada daily Udayavani for some years during the 1970s.As a discourser he had presented a number of discourses on varied topics in different parts of the country and abroad. His commentaries on Vishnu Sahasranama are well known.
  • He had written several books on Sanskrit language, literature, culture, philosophy which have a wide subject base and design.
  • He had translated works like Madhwaramayana and Mangalashtaka to Kannada. Also, beginning from Purushasukta and Srisukta, he had published several writings on the Upanishads, Bhagavadgita as well as several essays on various philosophical texts.

Country Music Legend Charley Pride passes away 
Charley Pride, the country music legend who amassed more than 50 top-10 hits between 1967 and 1987, and won several Grammy Awards, has died. He was 86.

  • Pride who is considered country music’s first Black superstar– his biggest songs included ‘Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,’ and ‘Mountain of Love,’ and 29 of his 52 top-10 hits rose to No. 1.
  • The music legend won multiple Country Music Awards. And in 1993, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, although he maintained that he’d had an open invitation there since his first performance in 1967.

Chuck Yeager, 1st to fly faster than the speed of sound, passes away 
Charles Elwood “Chuck” Yeager, the US test pilot of World War II who was the first pilot to break the sound barrier, died at the age of 97. His accomplishment launched the era of supersonic flight.

  • As a test pilot, on October 14, 1947, Yeager became the first human to officially break the sound barrier, when he flew the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft at Mach 1 (speed of sound) at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m). Level flight means flying at a constant altitude, not going up and down.
  • Yeager had been associated with World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War and his three-war active-duty flying career spanned more than 30 years.
  • Throughout his life, he flew more than 360 different types of aircraft and went on to break several other speed and altitude records in the following years.

National Energy Conservation Day
Every year on 14 December,the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, celebrates Energy Conservation Day in a bid to raise awareness on the importance of energy conservation for the present as well as future generations.

  •  The day is organised annually to showcase India’s achievements in energy efficiency and conservation, while working towards climate change mitigation.
