Dharmendra Pradhan launches PURVODAYA in steel sector

Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Steel Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched PURVODAYA: Accelerated development of eastern India through integrated steel hub in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Income Tax Department launched 24×7 control room

Income-Tax Department was launched 24×7 control room to monitor black money and illegal inducements in poll-bound Delhi. This facility will also host a toll-free number (1800117574). People can inform the department about any activity of use of money power, illegal distribution of cash etc.

Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity place in ‘8 Wonders of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’

Sardar Patel’s 182 meter tall Statue of Unity in Gujarat included in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s ‘8 Wonders of SCO’ list. S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister announced this.

Kolkata Port Trust renamed as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port

Kolkata Port Trust was renamed as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port on the occasion of 150th years celebration of Kolkata Port Trust. The event was also attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He dedicated a Commemorative Stamp to mark 150 years of Kolkata port trust to India.

Raisina Dialogue begins in New Delhi

India’s flagship global conference on geopolitics and geo-economics Raisina Dialogue began in New Delhi. Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated session. This is the 5th edition of the Raisina Dialogue has organised by jointly the Ministry of External Affairs and the Observer Research Foundation.

Two Coast Guard ships commissioned at Kolkata

The Indian Coast Guard commissioned two ships — Annie Besant and Amrit Kaur. These are the second and third in the series of five Fast Patrol Vessels for the force. The ships were commissioned at Kolkata.

  • Indian Coast Guard Ship Amrit Kaur derives her name from Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur who belonged to the ruling family of Kapurthala, Punjab.
  • Indian Coast Guard Ship Annie Besant has been named in honour of Annie Besant, a socialist.

Bangladesh hosted Muslim congregation “Bishwa Ijtema” in Dhaka

First phase of “Bishwa Ijtema” has commenced in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This is the second largest congregation of Muslim community after Hajj. The second phase of the congregation will be held from 17th January to 19th January 2020.

World Future Energy Summit held in UAE

The World Future Energy Summit commences in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The theme for World Future Energy Summit is “Rethinking Global Consumption, Production, and Investment”. The Summit will conclude on 17th January, 2020.

Treasury Department of USA removes China from “currency manipulator” list

The Treasury Department of United States of America has been removed China from the designation as “currency manipulator“.

Djokovic beats Nadal, leads Serbia to ATP Cup win

Novak Djokovic helped seal victory for Serbia in the inaugural ATP Cup team event after defeating his long-term Spanish rival Rafael Nadal in singles.

Kento Momoto from Japan won Malaysia Masters 2020

Japanese badminton player Kento Momota (world number 1 ranked) won the Malaysia Masters 2020 title. He has defeated Viktor Axelsen from Denmark by 24-22, 21-11. Kento Momota won a record 11 titles in 2019.



APPOINTMENTS

Govt appoints Michael Patra as RBI Deputy Governor

The government appointed Michael Debaprata Patra as the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The appointment of Patra, who is currently an executive director at the central bank, comes nearly six months after former deputy governor Viral Acharya’s pre-mature resignation.

  • The Reserve Bank currently has three deputy governors–NS Vishwanathan, BP Kanungo and MK Jain. Patra will be the fourth among the deputy governors. Shaktikanta Das is the governor of RBI.

Book of Arun Jaitley’s selected writings to hit stands in February

A new book, compilation of selected writings by former finance minister Arun Jaitley, offers readers with the late politician’s sharp insight on topics including GST, demonetisation and Kashmir, publishing house Juggernaut Books announced.

  • The book, “A New India: Selected Writings 2014-19”, is an authoritative account of the policies and decisions made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government during its first stint. It will hit the stands in February


OBITUARIES

Noted cartoonist Thomas Antony passes away

Eminent caricaturist and Kerala Cartoon Academy secretary Thomas Antony has passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was 62.

  • He was working as the executive artist with Malayalam daily ‘Metro Vaartha’.


IMPORTANT DAYS

National Youth Day

National Youth Day is celebrated on 12 January being the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India declared this day as National Youth Day and since from 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year.

  • The theme for this year is ‘Channelizing Youth Power for Nation Building’.
