Govt moves ahead with Orientation and Training Programme of iRAD App

Road Transport and Highways Ministry is in the process of implementing Integrated Road Accident Database Project (iRAD) which will be applicable across the country.

  • In the first instance, it has been decided to implement the proposal in six states. These are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • The basic iRAD app has been developed and will be customized as per the requirements of concerned states.

India will be self-reliant in production of fertilizers by 2023

Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has said that India will be self-reliant in the production of fertilizers by 2023.

  • Under Atma Nirbhar Bharat programme new fertilizer manufacturing units are being set up with an investment of 40 thousand crore rupees in the country to reduce dependency on import.

Jammu and Kashmir announces Rs 5 lakh annual health insurance for residents

Lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha has announced Jammu and Kashmir health scheme intended to provide universal health insurance cover to all residents of the Union Territory at the likely annual cost of Rs 123 crore.

  • The J&K health scheme will cover every resident from even life threatening ailments like heart diseases, renal failure, cancer, Covid 19 etc.
  • It will provide health insurance cover free of cost to all those residents of Jammu and Kashmir, who are presently not covered under AB-PMJAY or Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

SCTIMST develops device for prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (SCTIMST), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, has developed a device for the prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

  • Scientists have come up with a device that can facilitate flow of blood from the veins in the legs thus preventing DVT.
  • The device can bring relief to patients affected by prolonged immobility, bed ridden state, post-operative immobilization and paralysis of legs. The device developed can be placed in the market for less than one lakh rupees.

DRDO Research lab to be opened in Kailaras-Jaura region, Morena district in Madhya Pradesh

A Research lab of DRDO at a cost of 2 thousand crore rupees will be opened in Kailaras-Jaura region of Morena district in Madhya Pradesh.

  • The Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan informed that 350 hectares of land has been acquired for the research lab at a program organized for the inauguration ceremony, laying the foundation stone for several development works in Morena, Chhaira and Kailaras regions of the district.
  • He also announced opening of a medical college in Morena, sanctioning a Rs 267 crore project to bring water from Chambal to the city of Morena.

HCL Technologies joins NVIDIA partner network, will pursue opportunities in AI space

HCL Technologies (HCL), a leading global technology company, announced it has joined NVIDIA Partner Network (NPN), the US-based technology company’s partner program, with plans to pursue expanded opportunities in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) space.

  • HCL also announced the launch of NEXT.ai, HCL’s AI Lab, focused on upskilling engineers and architects utilizing AI solutions across hardware and software technology stacks.
  • This will enhance their capabilities to build AI-led solutions for multiple HCL clients across industry verticals.

Liberty General Insurance Partners with SpiceJet to Offer Travel Insurance

Mumbai-based Liberty General Insurance has partnered with SpiceJet to offer Liberty Secure Travel’ an insurance policy to consumers who book airline travel through SpiceJet’s website and mobile site.

  • Applicable across SpiceJet’s domestic network, Liberty’s new zero-cancellation service offered under the Liberty Secure Travel Policy allows Passengers can claim a full cancellation-fee reimbursement for a flight-booking made in advance not beyond 90 days, it further said, adding that the sum insured in the event of a ticket cancellation is ₹5,000.

TCS Becomes Second Indian Firm to Cross Rs 9 Lakh Crore-market Valuation Mark

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) became the second Indian firm to attain a market valuation of over Rs 9 lakh crore after Reliance Industries Limited.

  • The company’s market valuation went past Rs 9 lakh crore in early trade helped by a rally in its share price.
  • The stock of the software services firm gained 2.91 per cent to Rs 2,442.80- its record high on the BSE.

Japan’s Naomi Osaka wins US Open women’s singles title

In US Open Tennis Women’s Singles category, Japan’s Naomi Osaka defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the Women’s Singles final to clinch her third Grand Slam title.

US Open: Domnic Theim beats Alexander Zverev to win men’s singles title

Dominic Thiem produced a historic comeback to beat Alexander Zverev in a nervy five-setter and win the US Open men’s singles title for his first Grand Slam title in Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows in New York.

  • It marked the first time in the US Open’s Open era history that a player had recovered from losing the opening two sets to win the title. It was also the first time the final had been settled by a tie-break.

Chaitanya Tamhane bags Best Screenplay award for The Disciple at Venice Film Festival

Filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane’s ‘The Disciple’ won the Best Screenplay award at Venice International Film Festival. This is the second award the film got at the festival. Earlier, it was honoured with the International Critics’ Prize awarded by FIPRESCI.

  • Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland won the prestigious Golden Lion award at the festival. The film stars Oscar-winner Frances McDormand as the lead.
  • The Disciple was also selected as the only Indian film this year among the official selection of the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.


OBITUARIES

India-born Famed Pakistani Shia Scholar Passes Away

India-born renowned Pakistani Shia scholar Allama Zameer Akhtar Naqvi has died following a heart attack. He was 76.

  • Naqvi, a PhD holder from the University of Karachi, was known to have a deep knowledge of science, philosophy, literature, culture, journalism and Islamic history.
  • He authored 28 books on various subjects, including Urdu ghazals and the battle of Karbala. He was also the editor of the Al Kalam magazine besides heading the Anees Academy.


IMPORTANT DAYS

Hindi Diwas observed across the country

Hindi Diwas is celebrated across the country every year on 14 September.

  • It was on this day in 1949 that the constituent assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari as the official language of the country.
  • Government has taken several steps to promote the Rajbhasha and at the international forums, Hindi is being well received.

International Day for South-South Cooperation

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is annually observed on September 12.

  • It commemorates the date when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a plan of action in 1978 to promote and implement technical cooperation among developing countries.
  • Theme for 2020 is “Pathways toward the SDGs through South-South solidarity beyond COVID-19.”
