Odisha’s unique festival Raja Parba celebrated
Raja Parba, Odisha’s three-day unique festival celebrating the onset of monsoon and the earth’s womanhood has begun.

  • As a mark of respect towards the earth during her menstruation days, all agricultural works, like ploughing, sowing are suspended for the three days.

SBI relaunches Aadhaar-based online savings account opening facility
The State Bank of India (SBI) relaunched its Aadhaar-based instant digital savings account facility for customers who want to open an online account using the Yono platform. Yono is the lender’s integrated banking and lifestyle platform.

  • The ‘insta savings bank account’ will offer a complete paperless and instant digital savings account opening with just PAN and Aadhaar number.

Sanjita Chanu cleared of Doping Charge by IWF
International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has cleared India’s K Sanjita Chanu of anti-doping violation over charges brought up in November 2017 citing “non conformities” in the handling of her sample.

  • The Manipur lifter had tested positive for testosterone, a banned anabolic steroid, in an out-of-competition test conducted by the United States Anti Doping Agency before taking part in the 2017 world championships in Las Vegas. The 26-year-old 53kg lifter expressed relief, and looked ahead.

RBI Approves Kaizad Bharucha’s Re-appointment as HDFC Bank Executive Director
Private sector lender HDFC Bank said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the re-appointment of Kaizad Bharucha as the executive director of the bank for a period of three years with effect from 13 June.

  • In his current position, Bharucha is responsible for wholesale banking covering areas of corporate banking, emerging corporate group, business banking, capital markets and commodities business, agri lending, among others.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal set to get one-year extension
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal is all set to get a one-year extension. Mr. Venugopal’s three-year tenure comes to an end on June 30.

  • Mr. Venugopal, 89, was appointed in June 2017 after the former AG Mukul Rohatgi resigned citing personal reasons.
  • Mr. Venugopal was appointed the 15th Attorney General of India and continued in the post after the Narendra Modi government won a second term in 2019

Kathy Lueders Becomes The First Ever Female Director Of Human Explorations At NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that Kathy Lueders will be its first female director of human spaceflight.

  •  Lauders will be heading the Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Mission Directorate, that’s working to get astronauts back on the moon by 2024.
  • She has for years been in charge of the exhaustive testing program for space capsules developed by SpaceX, Boeing and other companies that are partnering with NASA to build vessels that can safely take humans into space.

Ghar Ghar Nigrani app launched in Punjab for pCOVID-19 house-to-house surveillance
The Punjab government launched a mobile application ‘Ghar ghar nigrani’, aimed at undertaking house to house surveillance to contain the spread of COVID-19.

  • The entire rural and urban population of Punjab above 30 years of age shall be surveyed as part of the drive, which will also cover persons below the age of 30 having co-morbidity or influenza-like illness.

Central Railway sets up Body Screening Facility ‘FebriEye’ In Mumbai’s CSMT, LTT Stations
In order to effectively scan passengers for symptoms of COVID-19, Central Railway has set up a body screening facility called “FebriEye thermal cameras” have been set up at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • This is yet another effort towards passenger safety after automated ticket checking and managing access (ATMA) machine and Always be Responsible and robotic Captain Arjun. 
  • FebriEye is an Artificial Intelligence-based thermal screening system for real-time and automated, non-intrusive monitoring to ensure that a person entering does not have a high fever


OBITUARIES

Vasant Raiji, India’s Oldest First-Class Cricketer passes away
India’s oldest First Class cricketer Vasant Raiji passed away at his home. He was 100.

  • A chartered accountant, he was also a well-known chronicler of cricket, having written books on C.K. Nayudu, Ranjitsinhji, Duleepsinhji, L.P. Jai and Victor Trumper.
  • Raiji, a right-handed batsman, played nine first-class matches in the ‘1940s and scored a total 277 runs. He opened the batting for Bombay and Baroda in the , and was a reserve for the Hindus team in the 1941 Bombay Pentangular. His two highest scores came in Baroda’s victory over Maharashtra in 1944-45, when he made 68 and 53.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput passes away
Sushant Singh Rajput, a prominent actor in Indian films and television programs, was found dead in his home in Mumbai. He was 34.

  • Mr. Rajput started his acting career on television, where he was best known for his role  in the films “Kai Po Che” and “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story,” got his start on television in 2008.
  • After leaving the show in 2011, he made his Bollywood debut in 2013 in “Kai Po Che,” a film based on a novel by Chetan Bhagat.
  • Mr. Rajput received praise for his performance as a gifted but troubled cricket player; the critic Taran Adarsh said Mr. Rajput was “blessed with wonderful screen presence.” He also received a Filmfare Award nomination.
