India becomes power surplus nation with electricity capacity of over four lakh Mega Watt
The government has said that India has turned into a power surplus nation with a total installed electricity capacity of over four lakh Mega Watt.

  • Keeping in mind the sustainable development goals, India’s power generation mix is rapidly shifting towards a more significant share of renewable energy.
  • Today, India is the world’s third largest producer of renewable energy, with 40 per cent of its installed electricity capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources.
  • Power Generation from Renewable Energy Sources has increased from 51 thousand 226 Gigawatt hours to one lakh 38 thousand 337 Gigawatt hours in 2020.

Indore to become the country’s first ‘Smart City’ with ‘Smart Addresses’
The city of Indore has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the firm Pataa Navigations to implement a fully digital addressing system, making it the first city in India to do so.

  • The MoU is signed by Rajat Jain, co-founder of Pataa Navigations, and Rishav Gupta, CEO of Indore Smart City.
  • Pataa has developed patented technology for the system and is working with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to develop a digital addressing system for the nation.

Panchayati Raj ministry, IRMA ink pact to work towards SDGs
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR), and the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), Gujarat will sign an agreement to strengthen Panchayati Raj institutions across the country.

  • The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will establish a framework under which MoPR and IRMA will collaborate in the area of Gram Panchayat Development Planning for localization of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) through Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).
  • The MoU will facilitate closer collaboration and provide a mechanism by which MoPR and IRMA will work together to find gaps and possible solutions to overcome gaps in the preparation of model Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) linkages with LSDGs.


BANKING & FINANCE

Norway’s central bank to build national digital currency on Ethereum
With the ongoing mainstream adoption of cryptographic technology, Norway’s Norges Bank, its central bank, hit a major breakthrough in its digital currency efforts as it released the open source code for the country’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) sandbox based on Ethereum technology.

  • CBDCs are an electronic form of central bank-backed fiat money. CBDCs can be based on blockchain networks but they necessarily don’t need to be on a blockchain. However, Norway’s CBDC, it’s based on Ethereum.
  • The sandbox is designed to offer an interface to interact with the test network. It also has enabled functions like minting, burning, and transferring ERC-20 tokens, as confirmed by the Bank’s official CBDC partner, Nahmii, in a blog post.

SBI joins Rs 5-trillion market cap club; stock surges 26% in three months
Public lender State Bank of India (SBI) hit the Rs 5-trillion-mark in market capitalisation (market cap) for the first time after its shares touched a record high of Rs 564.45, up 1 per cent on the BSE in intra-day trade in an otherwise weak market.

  • With a market cap of Rs 5.03 trillion, SBI stood at the seventh position in the overall market cap ranking, according to the data from BSE. In comparison, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 0.85 per cent at 60,058 at 09:42 AM. With this, SBI has become the third lender in the country to cross the market cap of Rs 5 trillion.
  • HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender holds first rank in this list, with a market cap of Rs 8.38 trillion, followed by ICICI Bank, which has a market cap of Rs 6.33 trillion, data shows.

First inter-modal digital TIR-based transport from India to Iran flagged off
The first inter-modal digital TIR-based pilot transport from India to Iran through the INSTC corridor was flagged off from Nhava Shewa (Jawaharlal Nehru Port), according to a statement.

  • The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is India’s vision and initiative to reduce the time taken for EXIM (Export-Import) shipments to reach Russia and Europe, and enter the Central Asian markets.
  • The Chabahar Port, which has been developed with Indian assistance, is the commercial transit centre for the region, especially Central Asia.

Alireza Firouzja wins 2022 Sinquefield Cup 
Iranian-French chess grandmaster, Alireza Firouzja beat Ian Nepomniachtchi in play-offs to win the ninth edition of the Sinquefield Cup.

  • Firouzja also grabbed an extra $100,000 for winning this year’s Grand Chess Tour.
  • Wesley So and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave came in second and third place, respectively. The fifth leg of the Grand Chess Tour, the Sinquefield Cup was held in Saint Louis, Missouri, US.


APPOINTMENTS

UAE’s Burjeel Holdings appoints SRK as healthcare ambassador
Burjeel Holdings, a private healthcare services provider in the MENA region has signed Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan as its new brand ambassador. The company is owned by UAE-based Indian entrepreneur Shamsheer Vayalil.

  • The actor will appear in a multi-platform advertising campaign in the region for the group that will be unveiled in the coming weeks. This will be the actor’s first healthcare ambassador role.
  • This partnership is the first healthcare ambassador role for the actor.


OBITUARIES

Former Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf passes away 
Former Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf has died aged 66 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Lahore.

  • Rauf had made his first appearance as an umpire in international cricket in 2000. He officiated in 64 Tests (49 as on-field umpire and 15 as TV umpire), 139 ODIs and 28 T20Is and was one of Pakistan’s leading umpires in the mid 2000s.
  • Rauf, who had played 71 first-class matches for National Bank and Railways before taking up umpiring, was appointed in the ICC elite panel in April 2006.


ENVRONMENT

Tamil Nadu notifies Nanjarayan Tank as bird sanctuary
The Tamil Nadu government has notified the Nanjarayan tank in Tiruppur district as the 17th bird sanctuary of the State.

  • In April, Minister for Forests K. Ramachandran said in the Assembly that the tank would be declared a bird sanctuary and ₹7.5 crore would be allotted for its development.
  • The tank is considered an abode of migratory bird species. Bar-headed goose, ruddy shelduck, northern shoveler and many other species native to Central Asia are expected to arrive at the tank by October.
