NATIONAL NEWS

India stands third in the world in terms of fish production: MoS Dr. L Murugan
Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Dr. L Murugan has said that the ministry has taken several steps to improve fish production, export and infrastructure development in the last eight years. Speaking at the valedictory of Inland Fisheries Summit in Bengaluru, he said, India stands third in the world in terms of fish production. 

  • Making specific reference to Karnataka, the Union Minister said that 734.77 crore rupees was allocated to the state under the flagship scheme of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) from 2020-21 till date for the development of infrastructure facilities.
  • Under PMMSY, over 53 crore rupees was given to complete phase three expansion of Mangalore fishing harbour, phase two of Gangolli fishing harbour, Alvekodi and Thenginagundi fish landing centres.

Haryana best-governed in big states: Public Affairs Index 2022
Haryana has emerged as the best-governed among 18 big states of the country, according to the Public Affairs Index 2022 prepared by a Bengaluru-based think tank.

  • A Haryana government spokesperson said that the state has topped among the major states with a score of 0.6948, followed by Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Karnataka.
  • Haryana has emerged as the best-governed state among the 18 big states, while Sikkim has topped in the category of 10 smaller states. He said that in PAI 2022, the analysis of governance experiences a shift from the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to a constitutionally enshrined principle of justice.

15 States among achievers in logistics performance index 2022, says report
Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Gujarat are among the 15 States and UTs categorised as achievers in the logistics index chart 2022, according to a report released by the commerce and Industry Ministry.The index is an indicator of the efficiency of logistical services necessary for promoting exports and economic growth.

  • Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Puducherry, Sikkim and Tripura are the other States categorised as fast movers in the ranking.
  • The 15 States and UTs ranked in the aspirers category include Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Mizoram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The other States and UTs which are in the achievers category include Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Amit Shah inaugurates ‘Gatha Swaraj Ki’ gallery in Scindia Museum, Gwalior
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a gallery-cum-exhibition depicting the history of prominent Maratha commanders at the sprawling Jai Vilas Mahal of Scindias, the erstwhile rulers of Gwalior. Shah was in Gwalior to lay the foundation for the terminal building and expansion of the Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport.

  • Amit inaugurated the gallery dedicated to the glorious history of the Marathas in the freedom struggle and visited the museum in Jai Vilas Palace of Scindias in Gwalior.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Japan to scrap remarriage restrictions on pregnant women
Japanese cabinet ministers approved the scrapping of a law that stipulates women pregnant at the time of a divorce must wait 100 days before marrying again.

  • Critics have campaigned for a withdrawal of the 1896 law, which had banned remarriage for six months until being revised in 2016, calling it outdated and discriminatory.
  • The change will also remove a rule that grants parents the right to discipline children to whatever necessary extent.

US Congressmen introduce resolution to recognise Pakistani atrocities during 1971 as Genocide
Two US Congressmen have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to declare Pakistan Army atrocities committed during the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh as an act of genocide and crime against humanity.

  • The resolution placed by Congressman Steve Chabot and Ro Khanna condemns the atrocities committed by the Pakistan Army between March- December 1971 against ethnic Bengalis and Hindus and death and suffering of countless people. It demands the President of the US to recognise the atrocities of Pakistan army as crimes  against humanity, war crimes and genocide.


SPORTS

Rudrankksh Patil becomes second Indian shooter to win 10m air rifle gold at World Championships
Young Rudrankksh Patil won gold in men’s 10m air rifle event in the ISSF World Championship, becoming only the second Indian to achieve the feat after the legendary Abhinav Bindra.

  • Patil also secured a 2014 Paris Olympics quota for the country in the process. This was India’s second Olympic quota.
  • The 18-year-old Rudrankksh beat Italy’s Danilo Dennis Sollazzo 17-13 in the gold medal match after a brilliant come-from-behind effort.


AWARDS

Prakash Padukone honoured with SJFI medal 
Badminton legend Prakash Padukone was awarded the Sports Journalists’ Federation of India (SJFI) medal for 2019 at a warm ceremony at the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

  • The medal was instituted in 2018, with Vijay Amritraj the first winner. The award function for 2019 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hyderabad wins ‘World Green City award’ at South Korea
Telangana’s Hyderabad city won the overall ‘World Green City Award 2022’ and ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ award at the International Association of Horticulture Producers (AIPH) World Green City Awards 2022 held in Jeju, South Korea.

  • Hyderabad beat cities like Paris, Mexico City, Montreal, Fortaleza and Bogota to be adjudged the grand winner. It not only won the category award but the overall ‘World Green City 2022’ award i.e. the best across all six categories.
  • Hyderabad also became the only Indian city to win laurels on the International platform. The AIPH had invited entries for ‘World Green Cities Awards 2022’ across six categories and Hyderabad won in the ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’.

YSR Lifetime Achievement Awards recipient announced
The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the YSR Lifetime Achievement and YSR Achievement-2022 Awards, which will be presented on November 1, the State Formation Day.

  • Giving details of the awards, he said that in selecting the awardees, utmost priority was given to individuals and organisations that influenced the society and left an indelible mark on it with their skills and talents in various fields.
  • Dr. YSR Lifetime Achievement Award carries a cash prize of ₹10 lakh, a bronze figurine of Dr. YSR, a memento and a commendation letter, while Dr. YSR Achievement Award carries a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, a memento and a commendation letter.
