NATIONAL NEWS

Rajasthan becomes first State to implement blindness control policy
In a first in the country, the Rajasthan government has implemented a policy for blindness control with the objective of ‘Right to Sight’.

  • The policy has been introduced with an aim to bring light in the lives of more than three lakh people suffering from visual impairment in the state. The prevalence rate of blindness in the country was 1.1 per cent in 2020 and work would be done to bring it down to 0.3 per cent through the blindness control policy.
  • Under the policy, the Rajasthan government will mandatorily run Keratoplasty Centres and Eye Banks at all the government medical colleges. Also, cornea collected by private organisations and NGOs getting financial help from the government will have to be provided to the government institutions on priority.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

World Economic Forum 53rd Edition at Davos, Switzerland
The 53rd edition of the  World Economic Forum (WEF) begun at Davos in Switzerland. The meeting will continue till 20th January. The theme for this year’s WEF meeting is ‘Cooperation in a Fragmented World’.  

  • The congregation of experts, academics, investors, and political and business leaders will discuss some of the pressing issues the world is facing today, such as the Russia-Ukraine crisis, global inflation and climate change and promote innovative solutions.
  • World leaders are expected to share their insights on the prevalent economic conditions across the globe. According to the WEF’s annual Global Risks Report, recession threat, cost-of-living crisis and debt distress is likely to dominate the outlook for at least two years. 


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

WPI Inflation ease to 4.95 percent in December
The wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation rate for December decelerated to a 22-month low at 4.95 per cent, on the back of a higher base and the easing of price pressure for food and manufactured products.

  • In November 2022, wholesale price inflation stood at 5.85 per cent. In December 2021, it was at 14.27 per cent.
  • The data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed food inflation — excludes manufactured food items — at minus 1.25 per cent contracted in December, from 1.07 per cent in November, as vegetable prices (minus 36 per cent) fell from their year-ago levels. However, the inflation rate for cereals, paddy, wheat, and pulses went up in December. 


SPORTS

India beat Sri Lanka by 317 runs to break record for largest win margin in ODIs
India thrashed Sri Lanka by a record 317 runs in the third ODI to clinch the three-match series 3-0. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill scored sublime centuries to help the hosts post an imposing 390 for five. 

  • Pacer Mohammed Siraj (4/32) then blew away the Sri Lankan top-order as India skittled out the visitors for 73 in 22 overs. Kohli remained not out on 166 off 110 balls, while Gill struck 116 off 97 deliveries. 
  • Opting to bat after winning the toss, opener Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma (42) put on 95 runs in 15.2 overs, before Kohli struck his 46th ODI century and 74th overall in international cricket to consolidate the Indian innings. Kohli and Gill shared 131 runs for the second wicket.

Akane Yamaguchi & Viktor Axelsen win Malaysia Open Women’s, Men’s Singles crowns respectively 
Akane Yamaguchi and Viktor Axelsen won the Malaysia Open Super 1000 women’s and men’s singles titles in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

  • Yamaguchi, the reigning world champion, registered a come-from-behind win over world no. 4 An Se Young to clinch the Super Series Premier title. Yamaguchi won her maiden Super Series Premier title at the China OpeChina’sn in 2017.
  •  Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan, the world no. 1 pairing in women’s doubles, blew away South Korea’s Baek Hana-Lee Yulim 21-16, 21-10 in 52 minutes.
  • In mixed doubles, the world no. 1 pairing of Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong, carrying on their last season’s dominating display, claimed the season’s first Super Series Premier title. 

Barcelona wins Spanish Super Cup after beating Real Madrid 3-1 in final 
Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-1 in Saudi Arabia to win the Spanish Super Cup, with goals from Gavi, Robert Lewandowski, and Pedri handing them the victory over bitter rivals. 

  • Robert Lewandowski, Gavi and Pedri scored a goal each at King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh to give Barcelona its first Super Cup trophy since 2018, and the first since the tournament’s Final-Four format began in 2020 in a lucrative deal for the Spanish football federation.

OECD appoints Clare Lombardelli as Chief Economist
Chief Economic Adviser to the Treasury, Clare Lombardelli, has been appointed as the new Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Chief Economist. She will lead the OECD’s economic work, replacing France’s Laurence Boone, who has held the post since 2018. 

  • A British national, Clare holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from London School of Economics and Political Science and Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University

Italian man sets record by ‘mirror typing’ books in ancient languages
A 63-year-old Italian man, Michele Santelia has achieved a world record by typing copies of 81 books backwards, a technique that he calls ‘mirror writing’, as per a report by the Guinness World Records (GWR). 

  • For the purpose of this record, the books must be typed using ‘mirror writing’, such that the result is the mirror image of any given language’s normal writing.
  • Michele’s latest book, Das Nibelungenlied Backwards, a medieval German heroic epic, was typed in 2022. Michele dedicated it to “the disabled people of the whole world; to all those who suffer daily in a bigoted and clumsy society.”.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

ISRO ‘Shukrayaan’ mission to planet Venus shifted to 2031
Sreekumar, the Satish Dhawan Professor at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and advisor to its space science programme, stated that the organisation has not yet received approval from the Indian government for the Venus mission and that, as a result, the mission may be delayed until 2031.

  • The ISRO Venus mission, Shukrayaan I, was slated to take off in December 2024. The concept was conceived in 2012; five years later, after the Department of Space got a 23% increase in the 2017–2018 budget, ISRO started preliminary investigations. The organisation asked for payload suggestions from research institutions in April 2017.


OBITUARIES

Mukarram Jah Bahadur, Hyderabad’s last Nizam passes away
The last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mukarram Jah Bahadur, who passed away night in Turkey, will be buried in the family vault in the Mecca Masjid courtyard. The preparation of the vault where other members of the Nizam’s family who governed Hyderabad starting in 1724 are buried was overseen by representatives of the Nizam Trust.

  • Prince Mukarram Jah was nominated by his grandfather as the head of the Asaf Jahi dynasty on June 14, 1954.
  • Since then, he has been identified as the eighth and the last Nizam of Hyderabad.His succession was recognized in principle by the Government of India.
  • He was officially called the Prince of Hyderabad until 1971, when the title and privy purse were abolished by the Indian Union.
