NATIONAL NEWS

PM Modi dedicates 1st-ever All India Institute of Ayurveda to nation

On the occasion of National Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) at Delhi’s Sarita Vihar.

  • The first ever AIIA has been set up along the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Build up as an apex institute under the ministry of AYUSH, the institution is expected to bring synergy between the traditional wisdom of Ayurveda and modern diagnostic tools and technology.
  • The All India Institute of Ayurveda, set up on a total area of 10.015 acres on a budget of Rs 157 crore, is the first medical institute under the AYUSH ministry to hold the coveted National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation.
  • The institute will have separate Yoga, Panchakarma, and Kriya Kalpa units, among others.

Myntra, Textile Ministry tie-up to promote handloom industry

E-commerce major Myntra launched its CSR initiative in association with the Union Textile Ministry, to work directly with weavers and elevate their economic stature.

  • With an initiative to provide impetus to the Government’s agenda to transform and revive demand for arts and handloom products in India, the company is committing itself along with some of its partner brands to bring artisans and their products online, providing them access to new customers and opportunities.

Mahindra launches ‘Prerna’ project for women farmers

Mahindra & Mahindra has launched a programme, Prerna, to empower women working in the agriculture sector by promoting efficient and ergonomic farm tools and equipment.

  • The project will be initially launched in the state of Odisha, with the intention to positively impact the lives of over 1,500 families across 30-plus villages.

 



INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Pakistan, 14 other nations elected to UN rights body

Fifteen countries, including Pakistan, have been elected to the UN Human Rights Council by the UN General Assembly.

  • In a vote, Afghanistan, Angola, Australia, Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, Senegal, Slovakia, Spain and Ukraine were elected.
  • They will serve a three-year term from January 1, 2018.


BANKING & FINANCE

Yes Bank commits Rs 156 cr for Namami Gange project

Private sector Yes Bank has committed Rs 156 crore to fund first Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to be constructed at Varanasi under Hybrid Annuity-PPP Model.

  • The bank has signed a deal with Essel Infraprojects for the financial closure of Rs 156 crore that will fund the STP under Namami Gange Project.

Yes Bank partners with Abu Dhabi Global Markets for collaboration on fintech

Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the International Financial Centre in Abu Dhabi, and Yes Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding to further foster cross-border exchange between the fintech ecosystems of the United Arab Emirates and India.

Javed Akhtar to be honoured with Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award

Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar is being honoured with the Hridaynath Mangeshkar Award on the 28th anniversary of Hridayesh Arts and the 80th birthday of veteran music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Eminent poet, lyricist and journalist Prabha Varma has been selected for the Padma Prabha Puraskaram this year.

Singer Krishna wins Indira Gandhi Award

Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna has won the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for 2015-16. The singer, who won the Ramon Magsaysay award for bringing “social inclusiveness in culture” in 2016, will be presented with the honour by Congress president Sonia Gandhi on October 31, Indira Gandhi’s death anniversary.

Richard Wilbur (American), whose meticulous, urbane poems earned him two Pulitzer Prizes and selection as the national poet laureate has passed away.
