BJP wins Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Elections

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is back in power for the sixth straight term in Gujarat and also it has won the Himachal Pradesh Elections. With this, the party now controls 19 of the 29 states.

  • Never before has any political party controlled as many states in India. Congress, 24 years ago, was the last time a political party was in control of 18 states.

Safe City Surveillance scheme launched by Bihar govt for Women Safety

The Bihar government has launched Safe City Surveillance Scheme for keeping the crimes against women in check. The scheme aims to bring all major public places under a strict watch of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and improve the overall crime control in the state.


Frenchman breaks record for sailing around the world

French sailor Francois Gabart broken the record for sailing around the world alone, circumnavigating the planet in just 42 days and 16 hours.

  • That is more than six days faster than the last record, set by fellow Frenchman Thomas Coville last year.
  • The debut record holder was Frenchman Francis Joyon who completed the odyssey in 72 days and 22 hours.


India can grow at 8 pc for next 20 years: UN expert

According to the United Nations, India can achieve an 8% growth rate for the next two decades by promoting investment and improving the living conditions of its people.

  • A senior Official announced this on lines of several factors that have led to India’s “positive” economic conditions. The UN, in its latest report, projected India’s growth rate to be 7.2 per cent in 2018 and 7.4 per cent in 2019.


UIDAI temporarily bars Airtel from conducting Aadhaar linked e-KYC verification

UIDAI temporarily barred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar linked e-KYC verification of SIM cards and bank clients.The action follows allegations of Bharti Airtel using the Aadhaar-eKYC based SIM verification process to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their ‘informed consent’.


Odisha CM inaugurates Tribal Sports Meet 2017

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Tribal Sports Meet 2017, a first-of-its kind event in the country to promote sports among tribals in Odisha.

  • The meet was inaugurated in Bhubaneswar. Patnaik also unveiled the logo of the event and mascot of the meet ‘Olly’.

Sakshi Malik strike gold at Commonwealth Wrestling C’ship

Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik won gold medal at Commonwealth Wrestling Championship by defeating New Zealand’s Tayla Tuahine Ford 13-2 in the final of the 62kg women’s freestyle category.

Australia win Ashes with crushing victory in third Test

Australia won the Ashes for the 33rd time after defeating England by an innings and 41 runs to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-Test series. With the win, Australia now has more Ashes series wins than England.

Former Brazil midfielder Kaka announces retirement from football

Former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder Kaka, who lifted the 2002 World Cup with Brazil, announced his retirement from football. Kaka, who won the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or award in 2007 while playing for AC Milan, had become the most expensive footballer in history after his then-world record £56 million transfer from Milan to Madrid.

Billionaire conservative Sebastian Pinera won Chile’s presidency, with his center-left opponent Alejandro Guillier conceding the election.


Rekha receives first Smita Patil Memorial Award for her contribution to cinema

The first ever Smita Patil memorial award was given to Rekha for her contribution in the film industry. National award-winning actor Smita Patil passed away in 1986.
