Centre allocates Rs 1,804 crore grant to Kerala, Rs 3,691 Crore grants to Tamil Nadu and Rs 3180 crore to Andhra Pradesh under Jal Jeevan Mission for tap water supply to every home
Union Government has allocated Rs 1,804 crore grant to Kerala under Jal Jeevan Mission to make provision of tap water supply to every home. With a four-fold increase in allocation, the Central Government has pushed for speedy provision of “Har Ghar Jal” in Kerala by 2023.
- The Centre has allocated Rs 3,691 Crore grants to Tamil Nadu under Jal Jeevan Mission to make provision of tap water supply to every home
- The Centre has also allocated over Rs 3180 crore to Andhra Pradesh under the Jal Jeevan Mission in the current year.
3 Centres of Excellence inaugurated in Karnataka under Indo-Israel Agricultural Project
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar and Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa jointly inaugurated three Centers of Excellence established in Karnataka under the Indo-Israel Agricultural Project.
- Under Government to Government cooperation 29 Centers of Excellence are to be set up in 12 states in India. Out of these, three Centers were launched virtually in Karnataka. The Centres of Excellence in Kolar, Bagalkote and Dharwad in Karnataka will implement advanced Israeli Agro-Technology tailored to local conditions.
- Under the Indo-Israel Agricultural project, Villages of Excellence will also be set in eight states across India. Karnataka will get 10 such villages linked to Bagalkote and Kolar Centres of Excellence. Indo-Israel Villages of Excellence will focus on establishing modern agriculture infrastructure, support farmers with capacity building activities and enhance market linkages to optimise profitability of the farmers.
Telangana AI Mission Launched ‘Revv Up”
As part of “2020 Year of AI” initiative, the Government of Telangana launched the Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) powered by NASSCOM.
- The vision of T-AIM is to develop Telangana as a global hub for Artificial Intelligence and leverage it for societal good. T-AIM announced the launch of the accelerator program ‘Revv Up’ that will enable and empower AI startups.
- Revv Up, which will begin its first cohort in July this year, is another step towards making Telangana and Hyderabad as a global destination for AI & other emerging technologies.
Defence Minister Approves Budgetary Support Of Rs 499 Cr For Innovations
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved budgetary support of nearly Rs 499 crore for research and innovation in the defence sector for the next five years.
- The funds will be used to provide financial support to nearly 300 start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and individual innovators with a larger goal of ensuring self-reliance in the defence sector.
- The scheme is in sync with the government’s push to cut imports of military hardware and weapons and make India a hub for defence manufacturing.
Govt extends validity of documents related to Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 till Sept
The government extended the validity of motor vehicle documents like driving licence (DL), registration certificate (RC) and permits till September 30, 2021, in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
- This covers all documents whose validity has expired since Feb 1, 2020, or would expire by September 30, 2021. This will help out citizens in availing transport related services, while maintaining social distancing.
Delhi Skill University to Setup Centres to Skill Kids in Slum Clusters
The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) along with a Pune-based organisation, Lighthouse Communities Foundation will set up centres near slum clusters to help youngsters develop skills for better employability.
- The first four centres, being called ‘lighthouses’, will be set up at Kalkaji, Malkaganj, Matia Mahal and Patparganj.
- At these centres, urban disadvantaged youths will be trained under a sustainable livelihood programme — ’Lighthouse: Centre for Skilling and Livelihood’. This is being supported by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.
Govt Approves Restructuring of Ordnance Factory Board into 7 New Corporate Entities
In a major reform initiative, the government approved a long-pending proposal to restructure the nearly 200-year-old Ordnance Factory Board that operates 41 ammunition and defence equipment production facilities into seven separate corporate entities to improve its accountability, efficiency and competitiveness.
- The decision to corporatise the OFB on the lines of defence public sector undertakings was taken at a meeting of the union cabinet, nearly two decades after the reform measure was mooted to bring professionalism and significantly enhance its productivity.
- The seven entities will include an ammunition and explosives group, vehicles group, weapons and equipment group, ‘troop comfort items group’, ancillary group, optoelectronics group and parachute group. Each of the seven entities will be like any other defence public sector undertaking (DPSU) and they will be operated by professional management.
TN Sets Up Commission to Study Enrollment Ratio of Govt School Students in Professional Courses
The Tamil Nadu government ordered setting up a commission led by retired Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, D Murugesan, to look into the enrollment ratio of government school students in professional courses like engineering.
- If the number of students -who get admitted to courses like engineering, agriculture, veterinary sciences, fisheries and law- from state run schools is less, the panel would recommend appropriate remedial measures.
- The panel would submit its report to the government within a month. Including Murugesan, there would be 10 members in the Commission.
Ladakh declared Open Defecation Free UT in India
The Union Territory of Ladakh has been declared Open Defecation Free UT in India under the First Phase of Swachh Bharat Mission.This was stated by Director of Rural Development Department Tahir Hussain Zubdavi.
- He further said that RDD Ladakh is taking scientific segregation of Waste and Garbage upon to Village Level and will be establishing Garbage Segregation Centre at Block Level and an awareness programme has also been started in Kargil Ladakh to make people aware about Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
- Mr Zubdavi also flagged off six Garbage Collection Vans for each Zones of Kargil to give for this purpose.

Bangladesh 3rd most peaceful in South Asia, India ranked 135th as per Global Peace Index 2021
Bangladesh has gone up 7 notches from 2020 and secured 91st place among 163 nations in the 2021 Global Peace Index.— behind Bhutan and Nepal and ahead of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
- Prepared by the Sydney-based think tank Institute for Economics and Peace, the Global Peace Index measures the state of peace across three domains — the level of societal safety and security, the degree of militarization and the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict.
- India has moved up two notches from its previous year’s ranking to become the 135th most peaceful country in the world and the 5th in the region.
- Meanwhile, Singapore has been named the most peaceful Asian country, while Iceland remains the most peaceful nation in the world, a position it has held since 2008, followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal, and Slovenia.
- Afghanistan is the least peaceful country in the world for the fourth consecutive year, followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, and Iraq.

India Extends USD 100 Million Line of Credit to Sri Lanka for Solar Energy Projects
India has extended a USD 100 million Line of Credit to Sri Lanka to help the island nation finance various projects in the solar energy sector and ensure that the country’s 70 per cent power requirements are fulfilled by renewable energy sources by 2030.

Indian Economy Likely Contracted 12% in Q1: Report
Lockdowns imposed by the states in April and May to contain the second wave of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic has likely led to the economy contracting 12 per cent in the June quarter as against 23.9 per cent contraction in the same quarter in 2020, says a brokerage report.
- The economy had its worst contraction on record in FY21 at 7.3 per cent as the 2.5 months of unplanned lockdown announced by the centre with just a four-hour notice had crippled the economy in the first quarter with a massive 23.9 per cent contraction, which improved to -17.5 per cent in the second quarter.
- But the economy showed a sharp V-shaped recovery from the second half when it posted a 40 bps positive growth and in Q4 clipping at 1.6 per cent, containing the overall contraction at 7.3 per cent for the year.
Hallmarking of gold made mandatory in 256 districts
The government announced the phased implementation of mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery with effect from June 16.
- In the first phase, gold hallmarking will be available in only in 256 districts and jewellers having annual turnover above Rs 40 lakh will come under its purview.
- From June 16, jewellers in 256 districts will be allowed to sell only 14, 18 and 22 carats of gold jewellery. Gold of additional 20, 23 and 24 carats will also be allowed for hallmarking.
GI Certified Jalgaon Banana Exported to Dubai
In a major boost to India’s exports of Geographical Indications (GI) certified agricultural produce, a consignment of fibre and mineral rich ‘Jalgaon Banana’ has been shipped to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
- About 22 tonne of the GI certified banana was sourced from farmers of Tandalwadi village in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, a cluster identified under the new agri export policy.

BCCI Reduces Life Ban on Spinner Ankeet Chavan to Seven
The BCCI has finally accepted Mumbai left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan’s plea that he be allowed to play professional cricket since Board Ombudsman DK Jain has reduced his life ban to seven years.
- Chavan, along with his then Rajasthan Royals teammates S Sreesanth and Ajit Chandila was banned for life by the Board in 2013 for his alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing scandal. However, Sreesanth’s ban was lifted last year by the BCCI, following which he played this season in domestic cricket.
