Prasar Bharati holds conclave on Direct to Mobile technology
India’s public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has held a conclave on ‘Direct to Mobile – 5G Broadband Convergence Roadmap’, in collaboration with India’s premier Technology Institute, the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, and the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI).

  • The conclave in New Delhi demonstrated for the first time NextGen Broadcast technology on smart phones and other smart devices, apart from releasing a joint white paper on Direct to Mobile Broadcasting by IIT Kanpur, TSDSI and Prasar Bharati.

India, Israel adopt ‘vision statement’ to boost defence cooperation
Marking 30 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries, India and Israel adopted a “vision statement” which will pave the way for strengthening defence cooperation in future.

  • Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Israeli counterpart Benny Gantz held bilateral talks in New Delhi. The two leaders discussed defence cooperation and the prevailing global and regional scenario.

RPF rescues 150 girls/women during pan India drive “Operation Mahila Suraksha”
Dedicated to the objective of women security a pan India drive “Operation Mahila Suraksha” was launched from 3rd to 31st May 2022.

  • During this drive, RPF has arrested more than 7000 persons who were traveling unauthorizedly in the coaches reserved for women. RPF also rescued 150 girls/women from becoming the victims of human trafficking.
  • With an objective of providing enhanced safety and security to lady passengers travelling by trains for their entire journey a pan India initiative “Meri Saheli” is also operational.

Govt. changes Service rules to make retired officers eligible for CDS post
Setting the stage for appointment of the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Government has amended Service Rules of the Army, Navy and Air Force, allowing retired Service Chiefs and three-star officers eligible for consideration for the country’s top military post.

  • However, with an age limit that the retired officer should not have attained 62 years on the date of appointment, retired Service Chiefs are largely ruled out, especially so for the present consideration.

Haryana CM launches pilot project for ‘Sujal’ initiative to conserve water
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Sujal’ initiative for Panchkula to monitor the water supply and control its flow in the region.

  • Currently a pilot project, it will be implemented across the state after being successful in Panchkula. Calling the initiative unique and environment-friendly, the chief minister said that it will prove to be a benchmark in the field of water conservation by helping them save the precious resource. Under the initiative, a device will be installed in every drinking water meter, tubewell and connections of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) that will store the water usage data online.

Israel signs UAE free trade deal, its first in Arab world
Israel signed a free trade deal with the United Arab Emirates on May 31, its first with an Arab country, building on their U.S.-brokered normalisation of relations in 2020.

  • UAE-Israel trade will exceed $2 billion in 2022, rising to around $5 billion in five years, bolstered by collaboration in renewables, consumer goods, tourism and the life sciences sectors.

European Parliament votes to ban sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035 to fight climate change
Members of the European Parliament have voted to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. The move aims to step up the fight against climate change through the faster development of electric vehicles.

  • The European Union assembly voted in Strasbourg, France to require automakers to cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 100 percent by the middle of the next decade. The mandate would amount to a prohibition on the sale in the 27-nation EU of new cars powered by gasoline or diesel.

Russia overtakes Saudi Arabia to become India’s 2nd biggest oil supplier
Russia has overtaken Saudi Arabia to become India’s second-biggest supplier of oil behind Iraq as refiners snap up Russian crude available at a deep discount following the war in Ukraine.

  • Indian refiners bought about 25 million barrels of Russian oil in May, or more than 16 per cent of all their oil imports. Russian-origin crude hit 5 per cent of India’s total seaborne imports in April for the first time, rising from under 1% throughout 2021 and Q1 2022.

Indian Bank launches KCC digital renewal scheme
Public sector Indian Bank has unveiled KCC Digital Renewal Scheme enabling customers to renew their Kisan Credit Card accounts through the digital platform.

  • Under the project WAVE – World of Advanced Virtual Experience initiative, Indian Bank Managing Director and CEO, S L Jain launched the scheme which eliminates the need to visit a branch or submit added physical documents.
  • The scheme would be beneficial to customers who are not able to renew their Kisan Credit Card accounts due to paucity of time during the harvest season.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Irdai extends ‘Use & File’ procedure to health and general insurance plans
In a bid to empower insurance companies to respond to the emerging market needs in terms of products, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) extended the “Use and File” procedure to all health insurance products and most general insurance products under, fire, motor, marine, and engineering.

  • Currently, insurance firms have to obtain prior approval from the insurance regulator to launch new products.

Adani and TotalEnergies to create the World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Ecosystem
Adani, India’s fastest-growing diversified business portfolio, and energy supermajor TotalEnergies of France, have entered into a new partnership to jointly create the world’s largest green hydrogen ecosystem. In this strategic alliance, TotalEnergies will acquire 25% minority interest in Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL) from Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL).

  • The new partnership, centered on green hydrogen, is expected to transform the energy landscape both in India and globally. Both Adani and TotalEnergies are pioneers in energy transition and clean energy adoption, and this joint energy platform further strengthens the public ESG commitments made by both companies.

Scindia awards first type certificate under Drone Rules 2021
Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on 14 June 2022 awarded the first ‘Type Certificate (TC)’ under Drone Rules, 2021 to IoTechWorld Avigation Pvt Ltd. The Gurugram-based company was established in April 2017 and is one of India’s leading manufacturers of Kisan drones. The Drone Rules, 2021, allow 60 days for the Quality Council of India (QCI) or the Certification Bodies (CB) and 15 days for DGCA for issuing the Type Certificate (i.e 75 days in total), provided all the necessary documents and test reports are as per specifications.
