New appointments at All India Bank Officers’ Confederation

Dilip K Saha, General Secretary, Punjab National Bank has been elected President, All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC)

D Thomas Franco Rajendra Dev, President, All India State Bank Officers’ Federation has been elected as General Secretary at the 11th Triennial Council of AIBOC.


Sun Pharma’s Dilip Shanghvi appointed as member on RBI’s western board

Sun Pharmaceuticals managing director Dilip Shanghvi has been appointed by the central government as a member on the western area local board of Reserve Bank of India.


Paytm launches its digital wallet play in Canada

Online digital wallet maker Paytm has launched its mobile payments services in Canada on March 16. It is the company’s first foray into an international market.

  • The payment gateway launched across Canada will allow users to pay for cell phone, cable, internet, water and electricity bills.

Government swaps chief executives of IDBI Bank, Indian Bank

 In an unprecedented move, the Centre has swapped the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of state-owned Indian Bank and IDBI Bank.

  • Mahesh Kumar Jain, who was Managing Director & CEO at Indian Bank, has been appointed as Managing Director & CEO of IDBI Bank, which is now in some financial trouble and faced with several legacy issues.
  • Kishore Piraji Kharat, who was IDBI Bank CEO, has now been appointed as Managing Director and CEO of Indian Bank.
  • Till now, one could mostly see chief executives of smaller public sector banks getting elevated to larger public sector banks. This is the first time a swap of CEOs between almost equal sized banks is being undertaken, say banking industry observers

FinMin okays capital infusion for 10 PSU banks

Coming in support of weak and non-performing public sector banks (PSBs), the Finance Ministry has chalked out a turnaround-linked Rs 8,586-crore capital infusion plan for 10 PSBs.

  • The 10 banks identified are Allahabad Bank (Rs418 crore); Andhra Bank (Rs1,100 crore); Bank of India (Rs1,500 crore); Bank of Maharashtra (Rs300 crore); Central Bank of India (Rs100 crore); Dena Bank (Rs600 crore); IDBI Bank (Rs1,900 crore); Indian Overseas Bank (Rs1,100 crore); UCO Bank (Rs1,150 crore) and United Bank of India (Rs418 crore).

New encryption key in Aadhaar authentication devices from June

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has said that all devices using Aadhaar authentication will have to adhere to its new encryption standards from June 1.

  • The move is aimed at adding another security layer to the hardware at a time when such devices are all set to take the centre stage in biometric-based digital payments.

PM Modi addressed International Diamond Conference

Addressing the International Diamond Conference “Mines to Market 2017” in Mumbai via video conferencing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Gems and Jewellery sector is a prime example of potential of Make in India.

  • The Conference was hosted by Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council(GJEPC).

First fully India-made train flagged off at Mumbai’s Dadar station

The much-awaited made-in-India rake, “Medha”, is on tracks of the Western Railway.

  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, via videoconferencing, flagged off the maiden run of the train from Dadar to Borivali, at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. The 12-coach train on the fast track halted at Bandra and Andheri stations.
  • Medha has been manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, which has installed LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.
  • The rake can run at a speed of 110 kmph, whereas local trains don’t run above 90 or 100 kmph.

Bihar hosted three-day International Buddhist Conference   

A three-day international Buddhist conference that began at Rajgir in Nalanda district of Bihar on March 17 will concluded on March 19.

  • The conference’s key objective, being attended by around 600 delegates from 32 countries was to deliberate on Buddhist perspective towards addressing or approaching issues such as ecological sustainability, social and economic justice, ethics and values, a holistic approach to education, inter-religious harmony and cooperation, gender equality, etc., stated a release.

ONGC signs pact to buy out GSPC’s KG block stake for $1.2 billion

State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed definitive agreements to buy out debt-ridden Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation’s (GSPC) entire 80% stake in KG-basin natural gas block for $1.2 billion.


Amitabh Bachchan Launches a New App for Breast Cancer Awareness

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan’s recently launched an app for breast cancer, which is named ‘ABC of Breast Health’.

  • This is the first-ever mobile app in the world dedicated to breast health and is launched in 12 most popular languages in the country.
  • It’s conceived, created and designed by Ushalaskhmi Breast Cancer Foundation.
  • A proposal has also been submitted to the Health Ministry to consider incorporating the application in the official health portal of the Union Government.

Meteorologist Sikka passes away

Dev Raj Sikka, former director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, who first proposed a link between the El Nino phenomenon and the Indian monsoon, died of a cardiac arrest.


YouTube sensation star Auntie Fee dies at 59

After suffering from a heart attack, the YouTube video sensation Felicia O’Dell, known as Auntie Fee, who also went by the name Chef Sista Girl, died at age 59.

  • Felicia O’Dell known popularly as Auntie Fee was an American YouTube personality and online cooking show star.

Rock and roll legend Chuck Berry passes away

American Chuck Berry, who with his indelible guitar licks, brash self-confidence and memorable songs about cars, girls and wild dance parties did as much as anyone to define rock ’n’ roll’s potential and attitude in its early years, died at 90.
