SBI begins operations as merged entity from April 1

The State Bank of India has merged its five Associate Banks – State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Travancore besides Bharatiya Mahila Bank – with itself with effect from April 1.

  • With this six-way mega merger, the SBI has joined the league of top 50 banks globally in terms of assets.
  • The total customer base of the bank is now expected to reach 37 crore with a branch network of around 24,000 and nearly 59,000 ATMs across the country.
  • The merged entity will have a deposit base of more than Rs. 26 lakh crore and advances level of 18.50 lakh crore.
  • Post merger, all customers of Associate Banks will enjoy the benefits of a wide array of digital products and services offered by the SBI.

Deadline for Indians to deposit old notes ended

The deadline to deposit and exchange demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes at RBI for Indian citizens who were abroad during the demonetisation period, ended on March 31, 3017.

  • This facility was available at RBI offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Nagpur. There’s no limit for exchange for eligible resident Indians.
  • Notably, NRIs are allowed to deposit such notes till June 30.

NDB, EBRD tie-up to foster infrastructure in emerging markets

The New Development Bank (NDB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have agreed to collaborate and exchange information in recognition of their mutual goal to foster sustainable development and infrastructure in the emerging markets of their respective regions of operations.

Japan commits 371 billion Yen assistance for infrastructure projects in India

Japan will provide 371 billion Yen or Rs 21,590 crores as official development assistance (ODA) to India for various infrastructure projects, including the dedicated freight corridor.

India becomes associate member of International Energy Agency

India has joined the International Energy Agency as an associate member, a development that the IEA said makes the prestigious Paris-based body more relevant and reflects the country’s move to the centre stage of the global energy dialogue.

Govt. launches eChallan, mParivahan mobile apps to report traffic violations

The government has launched two mobile apps, echallan and mParivahan, that provide access to various services and information, and enable citizens to report any traffic violation or road accident.

  • eChallan is an integrated enforcement solution to manage traffic violations through an Android-based mobile app and back-end web application, for use by the Transport Enforcement Wing and Traffic Police
  • mParivahan “is an empowering app for the citizen which provides access to various services, information and utilities related to the transport sector, bring convenience to citizen and transparency in the system.

Radhamohan Singh inaugurated International Center for Foot and Mouth Disease

Union Agriculture minister Radhamohan Singh inaugurated the International Centre for Foot and Mouth Disease (ICFMD) at Argul in Khurda district near the capital city on the occasion of Odisha’s foundation day on April 1. This centre will conduct research on how to control foot and mouth disease (FMD) of cattle and buffaloes.

Pradhan launches BS-IV grade fuel distribution across India

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan formally launched the BS-IV grade fuel distribution across the country.

  • Pradhan termed the initiative as the beginning of a new era to reduce environment pollution.

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirms target of BS-VI fuel by 2020

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed that his Ministry aimed to implement introduction of Bharat Stage-VI compliant fuel in the country by 2020.

  • Earlier, the Supreme Court order slapped a ban on Bharat Stage-III vehicles which came as a big blow to automobile companies.

Life imprisonment for slaughter of cows in Gujarat

The Gujarat Assembly amended the cow protection law, making it stricter by providing life sentence to those found guilty of slaughter of cows.

  • Since 2011, people involved in cow slaughter, transportation and selling of beef were penalised with a Rs 50,000 fine and a jail term of up to seven years under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act.

Uttarakhand High Court declares glaciers, forests as ‘juristic person’

The Uttarakhand High Court, which recently accorded the status of “living human entities” to the Ganga and Yamuna river, has now extended the order to include a wide range of natural entities within the ambit of a “juristic (non-living) person”.

  • A division bench of Justices Rajiv Sharma and Alok Singh of the High Court declared all the glaciers, including Gangotri and Yamunotri, rivers, streams, rivulets, lakes, air, meadows, dales, jungles, forests wetlands, grasslands, springs and waterfalls as living entities. Following the order these will have some legal rights on a living person.

Tamil Nadu gets Rs 2,014 cr central assistance

The central government has released an amount of Rs 2,014.45 crore as financial assistance to Tamil Nadu affected by drought and cyclonic storm.

Kanha tiger reserve becomes first in India to get official mascot

Kanha has become the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot — Bhoorsingh the Barasingha — to present the hard ground swamp deer as the spirit of the reserve and spread awareness to save it from possible extinction. Barasingha, or swamp deer, is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh.

  • The Kanha tiger reserve, spread over Mandla and Balaghat districts, is the only place in the world where the species exists.

Rajiv Kumar Chander appointed India’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN

Rajiv Kumar Chander was appointed India’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations Offices in Geneva.

  • Chander belongs to the Indian Foreign Services batch of 1983. He is the Consul General of India in Vancouver at present, a post he has held since August 2015.

Sachin Tendulkar launches own mobile app

Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar launched his Android and iOS app called 100MB. The app has been developed by Pune-based technology firm JetSynthesys. The app allows users access to their personal social media account within the app and access to exclusive information and interaction with Tendulkar.

Grant Elliott announces retirement from international cricket

New Zealand all-rounder Grant Elliott has confirmed his retirement from international cricket after signing a deal to play in England’s T20 competition.

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu released the book titled “Indian Railway- The weaving of a National Tapestry” jointly authored by Shri Bibek Debroy (Member, NITI Aayog) Shri Sanjay Chadha (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce) & Ms. Vidya Krishnamurthi.

  • In addition, Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu also launched Hi-speed free Wi-Fi services for the visitors at National Rail Museum.

El Salvador becomes first country to ban metals mining nationwide

El Salvador, Central America’s smallest nation, has become the first country in the world to ban metals mining nationwide following a long-running dispute with a Canadian-Australian company over an environmentally questioned gold project.
