NATIONAL NEWS

National workshop for Population Research Centres

Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has organized two-day workshop for Population Research Centres (PRCs) in New Delhi to highlight various features off its fagship schemes for concurrent management.

  • PRC scheme was started by MoHFW in 1958 with establishment of 2 PRCs at Delhi and Kerala. Now it has established network of 18 PRCs spread over 17 major States/UTs. Of these, 12 are attached to various Universities and 6 are in research institutions of national repute.

Two-day Yoga Mahotsava being celebrated

A Two-day Yoga Mahotsava, a Curtain Raiser for International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2019 was inaugurated by the Vice-Chairman, NITI AYOG Rajeev Kumar at New Delhi. Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) under Ministry of AYUSH is organising the Yoga Mahotsav-2019 to sensitize the masses for celebration of IDY 2019. On this occasion Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha announced two Applications ‘Yoga Locator’ and ‘Bhuvan App’ related to International Day of Yoga 2019.

  • On this occasion, Secretary, AYUSH announced the launch of ‘Yoga Locator’ application which is specially designed for IDY to record and show Yoga events across the world. He also informed about ‘Bhuvan App’ which has been designed in collaboration with ISRO. It will provide geo time location and documentation. He presented ‘Yoga for Heart’ as theme for IDY 2019.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

UN extends sanctions against South Sudan

The UN Security Council has extended an arms embargo and sanctions on South Sudan for a year, despite resistance from African countries, Russia and China. A US-drafted resolution was adopted yesterday by a vote of 10 in favour with five abstentions. Resolutions in the 15-member council require a minimum of nine votes for adoption.

  • The measure renews until May 31, 2020, an arms embargo on South Sudan along with an assets freeze and global travel ban slapped on eight South Sudanese nationals for their role in fuelling the war.

Financial Literacy Week 2019 organised by RBI

Telangana Agriculture Commissioner Rahul Bojja inaugurated ‘Financial Literacy Week 2019’ at Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Hyderabad. The Financial Literacy Week is an initiative of RBI to promote awareness on key topics every year through a focused campaign.

  • Financial Literacy Week 2019 will be observed from June 3-7 on the theme of ‘farmers’ and how they benefit by being a part of the formal banking system.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

FICCI survey forecasts India’s GDP growth at 7.1% for FY20

The country’s median GDP is forecast at 7.1 per cent for FY20 and 7.2 per cent for FY 21. The industry body FICCI’s economic outlook survey said that the minimum and maximum growth estimate stood at 6.8 per cent and 7.3 per cent, for 2019-20.

  • Inflation is expected to remain moderate and the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate is projected at 3.1 per cent in 2019-20, While, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has a median forecast of 4 per cent for 2019-20.

RBI sets up committee on corporate loans

The Reserve Bank of India constituted a task force on development of secondary market for corporate loans. The six-member task force will have T. N. Manoharan, Chairman of Canara Bank, as its chairperson and will submit its report by the end of August 2019.

  • The terms of reference of the task force would include review of the existing state of the market for loan sale or transfer in India as well as the international experience in loan trading.

Pakistan to host 2020 Asia Cup

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in its meeting in Singapore reasserted its decision to award the 2020 Asia Cup to Pakistan, casting serious doubts on the participation of defending champions India. The tournament, which may be organised in T20 format, will be held in September ahead of the World T20 in Australia.

  • It was also decided in the meeting that the tournament will be shifted to another venue if diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan do not improve. India had defeated Bangladesh in the final of the previous edition held in the United Arab of Emirates (UAE).


APPOINTMENTS

Admiral Karambir Singh takes over as Navy Chief

Admiral Karambir Singh assumed charge as the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff. Admiral Singh is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. 

  • He is also the first helicopter pilot from the Indian Navy to lead the naval armed forces. Having commanded missile corvette INS Vijaydurg, guided-missile destroyers INS Rana & INS Delhi during his almost 40-year career, he will be Navy chief till November 2021.

Ex-President Pratibha Patil Conferred Mexico’s Highest Civilian Honour

Former Indian President of India Pratibha Patil has been conferred the “Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca” (Order of the Aztec Eagle) the highest civilian award of Mexico given to foreigners. 

  • The Ambassador of Mexico to India, Melba Pria, conferred the award on Patil who created history as this country’s first woman President (2007-2012), at a special ceremony held in the MCCIA Bhavan, Pune. Patil, 85, becomes only the second Indian head of state to get the award. Earlier, the late President S Radhakrishna had been conferred this honour.


OBITUARIES

Godfather actor Carmine Caridi passes away

Actor Carmine Caridi, best known for portraying Carmine Rosato in The Godfather: Part II, is passed away. He was 85. The actor’s character in The Godfather: Part II played a key role in the territorial feud with Frank Pentangeli, played by Michael V. Gazzo.

  • He also starred in TV shows including Phyllis, Starsky and Hutch, Taxi, NYPD Blue as Detective Vince Gotelli and Fame as Angelo Martelli.
