NATIONAL NEWS

Govt revises premium to 436 for flagship insurance schemes PMJJBY, PMSBY
The government has revised the premium rates of its two flagship social security schemes, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, PMJJBY and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, PMSBY. Premium rates for PMJJBY has revised to 436 from the earlier premium of 330 rupees per annum. For the PMSBY, the revised premium will be 20 rupees instead of the existing 12 rupees per annum.

  • The revised premium rates will come into effect from 1st June 2022. This is the first revision in the premium rates since the inception of both schemes in 2015.
  • Union Finance Ministry said, this step would encourage other private insurers to come on board for implementing the schemes. The Ministry said, a target has been set to increase the coverage from 6.4 crore to 15 crore under PMJJBY and from 22 crore to 37 crore under PMSBY in the next five years.

NABARD Chairman launches My Pad My Right programme in Leh
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, NABARD, Chairman Dr GR Chintala launched My Pad My Right programme, in Leh, Ladakh.

  • The programme launched by Nabard’s NabFoundation with machinery and materials of a cost of Seven and half Lakh rupees. Dr GR Chintala announced to sanction One more lakh to upgrade the machinery to make sanitary pads suitable to the demands of women of different age groups.
  • This will help women to participate in country’s economic development.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Canadian PM Trudeau announces new law to freeze sales on handgun
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government introduced legislation that would put a freeze on importing, buying or selling handguns.

  • We are capping the number of handguns in this country, Trudeau said.
  • The regulations to halt the growth of personally owned handguns is expected to be enacted this fall.
  • It will be illegal to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada, the prime minister said.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

GST revenue collections touch Rs 1,40,885 crore for May
The Gross Goods and Services Tax, GST revenue collections in the month of May 2022 remained at one lakh 40 thousand and 885 crore rupees. This is the fourth time when the GST collection crossed 1.40 lakh crore mark since its inception and third month at a stretch since March 2022.

  • Of the total GST collection in May this year, Central Goods and Services Tax, CGST collection is over 25 thousand crore rupees, State Goods and Services Tax, SGST is 32 thousand crore rupees.
  • Integrated Goods and Services Tax, IGST is 73 thousand 345 crore and cess is 10 thousand 502 crore rupees.

FIH World Rankings: Indian men slip to 4th spot, women rise to 6th
The Indian men’s hockey team slipped to the fourth spot but the women’s side gained a place to rise to number six in the latest FIH World Rankings.

  • At the top, Australia (2842.258) and the Netherlands (3049.495) continued to be the world’s number one ranked teams in the men’s and women’s ranking.
  • In the men’s category, the Netherlands (2465.707) replaced India (2366.990) in third place based on its impressive results in the FIH Pro League.
  • In women’s world rankings, Australia (2440.750), England (2204.590) and Germany (2201.085) remain in third, fourth and fifth place.

India defeat Japan 1-0 to win bronze at Asia Cup Men’s Hockey
In Asia Cup men’s hockey 2022 at Jakarta, team India produced a gritty performance to beat Japan 1-0 and claimed the bronze medal. An early goal from Rajkumar Pal and some fine defending works was enough for this young Indian side to overcome Japan in an engrossing game.

  • India captain Birendra Lakra wins the player of the match award for his sturdy defensive work.

Indian women’s shooting team bags gold medal in 10m air rifle event at ISSF World Cup 2022 in Baku
Indian women’s shooting team of Elavenil Valarivan, Shreya Agarwal and Ramita have bagged a gold medal for India in the 10m air rifle women’s team event at the ISSF World Cup 2022 in Baku.

  • This was India’s first medal at the ISSF World Cup in Baku. The trio from India defeated Denmark 17-5 in the gold medal match. Tokyo Olympian Elavenil Valarivan shot above 10 in all the 11 series’ in the final.

PM Modi expresses anguish on passing away of INA Veteran from Malaysia Anjalai Ponnusamy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish on the passing away of the distinguished INA Veteran from Malaysia Ms Anjalai Ponnusamy.

  • In a tweet, Mr Modi said, people will always remember her courage and inspiring role in India’s freedom movement. He expressed condolences to the family and friends of the 102 year old INA Veteran.
