NATIONAL NEWS

Women’s commission, NALSA launch pan-India legal awareness programme for women
The National Commission for Women (NCW), along with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) launched a pan-India Legal Awareness Program for Women titled “Empowerment of Women through Legal Awareness” to impart practical knowledge about legal rights and remedies provided under various women related laws, thereby making them fit to face the challenges in real-life situations, said a press release by Ministry of Women and Child Development.

  • The programme aims to cover all the States and Union Territories across the country through regular sessions to make women aware of the various machinery of the justice delivery system available for redressal of their grievances.
  • The project will sensitize women and girls about their rights as provided under the various laws including the Indian Penal Code.

India’s largest landfill biogas plant launched in Hyderabad
Ramky Enviro has inaugurated one of the world’s first and India’s largest landfill gas-to-compressed biogas plant at the Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste (HiMSW) site.

  • The project is focused on the conversion of landfill gas into compressed biogas as an automotive fuel.
  • The project offers significant benefits such as carbon sequestration and reduced emissions of GHGs into the environment and contributes to the greening of the automotive industry.

Rural Development Ministry launches initiative to enable rural Women’s Self Help Groups to earn at least one lakh rupees per annum
The government has said that two crore 50 lakh rural Self Help Groups women will be provided livelihood support in the next two years. The Rural Development Ministry said, the government has launched an initiative to enable rural Self Help Groups women to earn at least one lakh rupees per annum.

  • The Ministry said, based on various models existing across the country, a detailed advisory has been issued to the State Governments.
  • Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, poor women from different cross-sections of class and caste form Self Help Groups and their federations, providing financial, economic and social development services to their members for enhancing their income and quality of life.

Centre constitutes 20-member EGoS to monitor development and implementation of PM Gati Shakti NMP
The Centre has constituted a 20-member Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS), which will be a monitoring mechanism for the development and implementation of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP).

  • The Cabinet Secretary, Rajiv Gauba will be its Chairperson. The  Members of this Empowered Group include Chairman, Railway Board,  Secretaries of  Road, Transport and Highways,Civil Aviation; Petroleum aNd Natural Gas,  Power; Telecommunications; Coal,  Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizers and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
  • The terms of reference of  Empowered Group of Secretaries is to review and monitor implementation of the Plan to ascertain the logistics efficiency and adopt framework and norms for undertaking any amendments in the Plan.

Education Minister launches Bhasha Sangam initiative for schools, Bhasha Sangam Mobile App & Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Mobile Quiz
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched Bhasha Sangam initiative for schools, Bhasha Sangam Mobile App and Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Mobile Quiz.

  • Bhasha Sangam is an initiative of the Ministry of Education under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, to teach basic sentences of everyday usage in 22 Indian languages.
  • The idea is that people should acquire basic conversational skills in an Indian language other than their mother tongue. Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Quiz game is targeted towards children and youngsters for helping them learn more about different regions, states, culture, national Heroes, monuments, traditions, tourist locations, languages, geography, history and  topography.

Madhya Pradesh government announces scheme to provide free residential plots to families
The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a scheme to provide free plots of land to families who don’t own one, so that they can lead a dignified life.

  • Under the Mukhyamantri Awasiya Bhu-adhikar Yojna, the state government will provide plots to families that don’t have land to build their own homes, the official from the public relations department said.
  • The scheme has been implemented with the objective of ensuring that every family has the right to a dignified life with basic necessities, Chouhan said, adding that a residential plot will help people get loans from government schemes and banks. The scheme has been started to provide residential plots to the eligible families on Abadi land in each Gram Panchayat.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070: PM Modi at COP26 Summit
India will achieve net zero emissions latest by 2070, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

  • By 2030 India will ensure 50% of its energy will be sourced from renewable energy sources. India will reduce its carbon emissions until 2030 by a billion tonnes. India will also reduce its emissions intensity per unit of GDP by less than 45%.
  • India would also install 500 Gigawatt of renewable energy by 2030, a 50 gw increase from its existing targets, Prime Minister said.

‘VAX’ named Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year 2021
Oxford English Dictionary has announced ‘vax’ as Word of the Year 2021 after words related to vaccines spiked in frequency this year.

  • Words related to vaccines spiked in frequency in 2021 due to the pandemic. Double vaxxes, unvaxxed and anti-vaxxer have all seen a surge in use.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI eases current a/c rules for exposures below Rs 5 cr 
The Reserve Bank of India eased current account rules for bank exposures less than Rs 5 crore, allowing lenders to open current account, cash credit and overdraft facilities without any restriction.The regulator asked banks to implement the changes within one month.

  • For  borrowers, where the exposure of the banking system is less than Rs 5 crore, there is no restriction on opening of current accounts or on provision of CC/OD facility by banks, subject to obtaining an undertaking from such borrowers that they shall inform the bank(s), as and when the credit facilities availed by them from the banking system reaches Rs 5 crore or more.
  • For borrowers where the exposure is more than Rs 5 crore, will continue to maintain current accounts with any one of the banks with which they have cash credit or overdraft facility, provided that the bank has at least 10 per cent of the exposure of the banking system to that borrower.

  • Through the exclusive defence service salary package–Power Salute–Axis Bank will offer numerous benefits to all ranks of the Indian Navy, veterans and cadets.

YES Bank launches co-branded credit card ‘FinBooster’ with BankBazaar
Yes Bank announced the launch of co-branded credit card FinBooster in partnership with BankBazaar.com.

  • The card, FinBooster, built around credit fitness tracker, will empower customers to keep track of their creditworthiness while also improving their score basis review of factors impacting their credit score through an intuitive CreditStrong app subscription.
  • It is complimentary for the cardholder for the first year.

RBI eases current account rules for exposures less than five crore rupees
The Reserve Bank of India eased Current Account Rules for bank exposures less than five crore rupees allowing lenders to open current accounts, cash credit and overdraft facilities without any restriction. The Apex Bank asked banks to implement the changes within one month.

  • The RBI said, in its guidelines that for borrowers, where the exposure of the banking system is less than five crore rupees, there is no restriction on the opening of current accounts or on the provision of CC/OD facility by banks, subject to obtaining an undertaking from such borrowers that they will inform the banks, as and when the credit facilities availed by them from the banking system reaches five crore rupees or more.
  • It added that borrowers where the exposure is more than five crore rupees, will continue to maintain current accounts with any one of the banks with which they have cash credit or overdraft facility, provided that the bank has at least 10 per cent of the exposure of the banking system to that borrower.
  • The banking regulator also permitted banks to open and maintain inter-bank accounts, all accounts with institutions like EXIM Bank, NABARD, NHB and SIDBI account attached by orders of Central or State Government and investigative agencies without any restrictions.

Sebi forms IT project advisory committee to provide technical expertise
Sebi has constituted IT Projects Advisory Committee that will advise the markets regulator on projects aimed to utilise advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics and cloud computing.

  • The seven-member committee, headed by Abhay Karandikar, a director at IIT Kanpur, will provide guidance to upgrade existing Sebi’s IT systems and solutions with the latest IT practices, techniques, tools and technologies, an update available with the regulator showed.
  • It will provide technical expertise to Sebi in various stages of IT solution procurement as members of the Tender Evaluation Committee.

J&K team for deaf clinches 1st position in World Deaf Judo Championship
In yet another shot in the arm of J&K sports performance, the J&K team for deaf clinched 1st position in World Deaf Judo Championship held at Paris Versailles, France.

  • Rakshanda Mehak who is part of the Indian team for the deaf clinched the bronze medal by defeating the South Korean team in the semifinal.
  • Worth to mentioning, our National Girls team has won a bronze medal while Nirchara Umed of Haryana is below 57 KG category, Divya Tiwari of Uttar Pradesh is below 52 KG category and Rakshanda Mehak of J&K have added one more feather in the crown.

Harbhajan Singh, Javagal Srinath among 18 new Honorary Life Members of MCC
Harbhajan Singh and Javagal Srinath have been announced among the 18 new Honorary Life Members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) alongside England players Sir Alastair Cook, Marcus Trescothick, Ian Bell and Sarah Taylor.

  • Apart from the Indian duo, the MCC honoured Hashim Amla, Herschelle Gibbs, Morne Morkel and Jacques Kallis from South Africa. Australia’s Damien Martyn and Alex Blackwell of Australia were also honoured while Ian Bishop, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan were named from the West Indies.
  • Rangana Herath of Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe’s Grant Flower and New Zealand’s Sara McGlashan completed the list.

Kerala’s Kochi wins award for sustainable transport system
The city of Kochi in Kerala, widely known as the Queen of Arabian Sea, has won the award for the city with the most sustainable transport system in the country.

  • The award was given away by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi.
  • During the last decade or so, there has been a conscious effort in Kochi and its suburbs to shift towards a green and people-oriented mobility — be it the Kochi Metro Rail, Kochi Water Metro, the Kochi Open Mobility Network or setting up the first solar powered airport in the world.


OBITUARIES

Former Australian Test Star Ashley Mallett passes away 
Former Australia all-rounder Peter Philpott has died at the age of 86 following a long battle with illness.

  • A leg-spinner and middle-order batsman, Philpott played eight Tests for Australia in the mid-1960s, claiming 26 wickets at an average of 38.46. In 76 first-class games, he took 245 wickets and made 2,889 runs.
  • Former New South Wales captain Philpott made his test debut in the 1964-65 series in the West Indies where he captured 18 wickets. Against England in a home Ashes series, he took 5-90 in the first innings of the first test in 1965.

The book titled “John Lang: Wanderer of Hindoostan, Slanderer of Hindoostanee, Lawyer for the Ranee” book by Amit Ranjan has been released recently.

  • The book is about John Lang’s life, his exploits, and literary works.He was an Australian journalist and lawyer who settled in India in the 19th century. He fought many cases against the British and also represented Rani Laxmibai in her legal battle against the annexation of her kingdom of Jhansi by the East India Company (EIC).
