Bharatiya Mahila Bank to merge with SBI

The Government of India has decided to merge the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with the State Bank of India (SBI) to ensure greater banking services outreach to a larger number of women, at a faster pace.

  • The decision to merge BMB with SBI has been taken in view of the advantage of the large network of SBI among other things.
  • Some time back, government has given approval for the merger of 5 associate banks with SBI leaving the BMB decidion which has now been approved.

ICICI Bank launches ‘Mera iMobile’ for rural customers

Private sector bank ICICI Bank Ltd announced the launch of a unique mobile banking app ‘Mera iMobile’ for rural customers that will allow them to access banking services as well as information on agri services.

  • The app allows users in rural areas to avail as many as 135 services, some of which are unprecedented in the industry.

Uttarakhand HC recognises Ganga as India’s 1st living entity

The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday recognised river Ganga as the first living entity of India. Following the order, India’s longest river will now enjoy all rights provided by the Constitution of India as a living person.

  • This reportedly makes Ganga the world’s second river after New Zealand’s Whanganui River to be given such a status.

Five-month-long economic blockade of Manipur comes to an end

The nearly five-month-long economic blockade on the two National Highways of Manipur by the United Naga Council has come to an end.

  • This comes after successful tripartite talks among the representatives of the Centre, new BJP State Government and the UNC at Senapati District Headquarters
  • The blockade was imposed on NH-2 and NH-37 by the United Naga Council on 1st of November last year to protest against the creation of seven new districts by the erstwhile Okram Ibobi Singh-led Congress government in the state.

Private township becomes first in the country to go cashless

 Essar’s Nand Niketan at Hazira in Surat district of Gujarat has become India’s first private sector township to go cashless, using mobile wallet for performing digital transactions.

Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has launched the “Kahin Bhi-Kabhi Bhi” medical services for ESIC beneficiaries of Delhi/Noida on a pilot basis.


India’s longest tunnel to be opened for regular traffic soon

India’s longest road tunnel built on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway will open to traffic very soon.

  • The work on the 9.2 km-long twin-tube tunnel, which is part of a 286-km-long four-lane project on the highway, started on May 23, 2011 in lower Himalayan mountain range, and cost Rs 3,720 crore.
  • The tunnel, which is located at an elevation of 1200 meters, will be the first in India to be equipped with world class “integrated tunnel control system” through which ventilation, fire control, signals, communication and electrical systems will be automatically actuated.

Five Indians in WEF’s 2017 young global leaders list

Five Indians, including Paytm Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Shruti Shibulal of The Tamara Hospitality, have made it to the World Economic Forum’s 100 Young Global Leaders list.

  • The other individuals who represented India in the list include Ambarish Mitra Founder and CEO Blippar, a mobile phone app business valued at USD 1.5 billion; Hindol Sengupta, Editor at large Fortune India and Rwitwika Bhattacharya — Agarwal Founder and CEO Swaniti Initiative.

India ranks 122nd in happiness index

India ranked 122nd, behind terror-riven Pakistan and poorest-of-poor Nepal in the global list of the happiest countries, according to a United Nations report.

  • India came down by three slots, as last year it was placed at 118th spot.
  • Norway took the top spot from Denmark as the happiest country in the world.
  • The World Happiness Report was released to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness on March 20.

Vodafone-Idea Cellular merger to create India’s largest telecom

In one of the biggest mergers in the telecom space, Vodafone India and Aditya Birla Group-promoted Idea Cellular announced their much-awaited amalgamation.

  • Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, will be its Chairman.
  • The merger will create an entity with over Rs 80,000 crore revenue.

Snapdeal appoints Jason Kothari as FreeCharge CEO

E-commerce major Snapdeal announced the appointment of Jason Kothari as the Chief Executive Officer of FreeCharge and a commitment to invest an additional USD 20 million in the company.

Dubai launches world’s fastest free airport Wi-Fi

Dubai Airports, which manages both the Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airports, has launched the world’s fastest free Wi-Fi service across its terminals with speeds up to 100 Mbps. Called the ‘WOW-Fi’, the service provides Wi-Fi speed about ten times faster than many households have in the UAE.


Japan 1st country to elect transgender man to public office

Japan has become the first country in the world to elect a transgender man to a public office. The 25-year-old Tomoya Hosoda was elected as a councillor for the Japan’s Iruma after winning 21 of 22 seats in the elections.


Mumbai lose its permanent status in BCCI

Mumbai lose its permanent status in the Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI. The new constitution of the Indian cricket board, finalised by the Committee of Administrators appointed by the Supreme Court of India also granted full membership with voting rights to all the North Eastern states, as recommended in Lodha Panel reforms.
