NATIONAL NEWS

Punjab launches e-stamping facility; abolishes physical stamp papers of all denominations
The Punjab government decided to abolish the physical stamp papers in an attempt to bring efficiency and check the pilferage of State revenue.

  • Following this, stamp paper of any denomination can now be obtained via ‘e-stamp’, which includes computerised print-out from any stamp vendor or from banks authorised by the State government.
  • Earlier the e-stamping facility was applicable only to a value of above ₹20,000, but the government is extending this facility to stamp papers for all denominations starting from ₹1.

PM Modi inaugurates Centre for Brain Research at IISc Bengaluru
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) and laid the foundation for Bagchi Parthasarathy Multispeciality Hospital at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

  • The CBR is developed as a one of its kind research facility and focuses on conducting vital research to provide evidence-based public health interventions to manage age-related brain disorders.

Beneficiaries of the PFRDA pension scheme increased by 24%
Subscribers under the two flagship pension schemes administered by PFRDA rose by over 24 per cent from a year ago to 5.32 crore as of May 31, 2022, official data showed.

  • The number of subscribers in various schemes under the National Pension System (NPS) rose to 531.73 lakh by the end-May 2022 from 428.56 lakh in May 2021 showing a year-on-year increase of 24.07 per cent.

Israel, Haryana Government sign Joint Declaration on Water Cooperation
The Haryana Government and the State of Israel have signed a joint declaration in the field of integrated water resources management and capacity building.

  • Dr. Satbir S. Kadian , Engineer-in-Chief cum Project Director Atal Bhujal Yojana Haryana shared that Israel is partnering with Haryana to transform Water Sector and accomplish SDG -2030 Goals.
  • As part of this joint declaration, MASHAV will share knowledge, capacity building and Israeli technologies for the development of Haryana in the water management sector.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI suspends license of Millath Co-operative Bank due to inadequate capital
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that Millath Co-operative Bank Ltd., Davangere, Karnataka, had its license suspended leading to a shortage of capital. As a result, the bank will cease to conduct banking operations on June 18, 2022, at the close of business.

  • The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Karnataka has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

RBI spent more to print ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 notes in FY22
Selling price of bank notes in the denomination of ₹20, ₹50, ₹100 and ₹200 has gone up in FY22. However, for notes in the denomination of ₹500, the prices have remained unchanged.

  • Selling price for 1,000 pieces of ₹50 recorded a maximum increase of around 23 per cent in FY22 over FY21, while that of ₹20 registered the lowest increase of a little over 1 per cent, according to information sourced through RTI from the Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Ltd (BRBNML).
  • Although notes of ₹500 denomination are the highest in terms of volume (34.9 per cent of all denomination) among all the paper notes in circulation, and also in terms of value (73.3 per cent of value of all denomination), their selling price has not seen any change in FY22 and FY21.
  • Interestingly, even as RBI spent ₹4,984.8 crore, which is 24 per cent more than it did in FY21 (₹4,012.09 crore), the total supply was lower. The overall cost of printing currency in FY22 was the second highest, after an all-time high of around ₹8,000 crore during the year of demonetisation (2016-17).

Lic Launches Dhan Sanchay Savings Life Insurance Plan
The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has launched a new plan called Dhan Sanchay, which is a non-linked, non-participating, individual savings life insurance plan that provides both protection and savings.

  • This plan offers financial assistance to the family in the event of the life assured’s untimely death within the policy’s term. It also offers a guaranteed income stream from the date of maturity until the end of the payout period.
  • The first two alternatives require a minimum Sum Assured of Rs.3,30,000/-, the third option requires a minimum Sum Assured of Rs.2,50,000, and the fourth option requires a minimum Sum Assured of Rs.22,00,000.
  • There are no limitations on the maximum Premium. The minimum age for entrance varies depending on the Policy term selected.
  • The death benefit payable on the death of a Life Assured during the policy term after the date of starting of risk but before the stipulated date of maturity is known as the Sum Assured on Death.

Govt declares ICICI, HDFC, NPCI’s IT resources as critical information infra
The government has declared the IT resources of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and UPI managing entity NPCI as ‘critical information infrastructure’, implying any harm to them can have an impact on national security and any unauthorised person accessing these resources may be jailed for up to 10 years, according to an official notification.

  • The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), in the notification dated June 16, declared the IT resources of ICICI Bank as critical infrastructure under Section 70 of the IT Act, 2000.
  • In a similar worded two other notifications, Meity declared IT resources of HDFC bank and UPI managing entity National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) as critical infrastructure.

DBS Bank India acquires 9.9% stake in Svakarma Finance
DBS Bank India Ltd. said it has acquired a 9.9% stake in Svakarma Finance, a non-deposit taking, non-banking finance company, for delivering relevant financial solutions to micro enterprises through a combination of direct lending and co-lending.

  • DBS Bank India’s strategy for its expanded franchise across over 300 locations and over 500 branches envisages significant growth in SME and consumer businesses.

Max Verstappen wins Canadian Grand Prix 2022
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen narrowly claimed his sixth victory of the Formula 1 season after withstanding pressure from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix.

  • For the second time this season, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez was forced to retire from the race due to engine problems, while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton grabbed his second podium this campaign in third.

Ruth Ozeki wins Women’s Prize for Fiction for ‘The Book of Form and Emptiness
The prestigious literary prize was awarded to Canadian-American author Ruth Ozeki for her novel “The Book of Form and Emptiness.”Now in its 27th year, the Women’s Prize for Fiction is given to a female English-language writer from anywhere in the world whose voice rings true.

  • Ozeki’s philisophical story is about a 14-year-old boy and his relationship to the objects in his house, which talk to him after the death of his father.
  • As the winner, Ozeki takes home 30,000 pounds sterling ($36,000 or €34,900) and a bronze figurine called Bessie, both of which are funded by an anonymous donor. The recognition will, in turn, help the author sell her books and further bring her name to the public.

UNESCO Recognises Use Of ICT Under PM eVidya Scheme
The Ministry of Education initiative to use ICT under the “PM eVidya” scheme during the Covid pandemic has won UNESCO’s recognition, officials said.

  • The PM eVIDYA programme was initiated as part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’ by the ministry in May 2020 which unifies all efforts related to digital, online, on-air education to enable multi-mode access for imparting education by using technology to minimise learning losses.
  • This award recognises innovative approaches in leveraging new technologies to expand educational and lifelong learning opportunities for all, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Goal 4 on Education.

Prime Minister’s Awards for Outstanding Contribution towards the Development and Promotion of Yoga-2021
The Prime Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution towards the Development and Promotion of Yoga, one of the most coveted honours in the field of Yoga, has been announced for the year 2021. Two individuals, namely Shri Bhikkhu Sanghasena Leh, Ladakh and Shri Marcus Vinicius Rojo Rodrigues, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and two organisations, namely, The Divine Life Society, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand and the British Wheel of Yoga, United Kingdom are the recipients of the same.

  • The awards for the Outstanding Contribution towards the Development and Promotion of Yogawas announced by the Prime Minister of India on the occasion of the 2nd International Day of Yoga celebrations at Chandigarh on 21st June, 2016.
  • The winners will be felicitated with of a Trophy, Certificate and a Cash Award each. The value of each Cash Award would be Rs. 25.00 lakh.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

New Advanced Light Helicopter Squadron 840 CG inducted in Indian Coast Guard
In the Indian Coast Guard, a new air squadron was created in Chennai by the name 840 Squadron, initially with an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mark-III aircraft.

  • The aircraft was received with the traditional water cannon salute, in presence of Inspector General AP Badola, Commander of the eastern Coast Guard Region. This is the first such aircraft to be positioned by the defence force in the eastern region.
  • Three more ALH aircraft will be added in the inventory of the new Squadron shortly, says the Coast Guard. The aircraft are having Beyond the Visual Range detection, using modern radars. It is equipped for target neutralisation operations, using its mounted Heavy Machine Gun.


OBITUARIES

Well-known photojournalist R Raveendran passes away
Veteran photojournalist R. Raveendran passed away. Mr. Raveendran, 69, was the recipient of numerous photography awards and is known for his iconic photo of Rajiv Goswami setting himself on fire during the Mandal agitation in the Capital.

  • He has worked in AFP and ANI. He started his career as a teleprinter operator in AFP 1973 and then became a photographer. He was presently working with ANI as Photo Editor.
