PM Modi unveils nine highway projects worth over Rs 14,000 Cr in Bihar; Says over 6 lakh villages will be connected by Optical fibre network

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of nine highway projects worth 14,258 crore rupees in Bihar through video conferencing.

  • These highway projects involve a road length of about 350 kilometres at a cost of four thousand two hundred 58 crore rupees.
  • The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Optical Fibre internet services where all the 45 thousand nine hundred 45 villages of Bihar have been connected through Optical Fibre Internet Service. The project would also entail implementation of one wi-fi and five free of cost connections to Government Institutions like Primary Schools, Anganwadi Centres, Aasha Workers and Jeevika Didi.

Govt launches Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan in 272 most affected districts

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has formulated and is implementing a National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) for 2018-2025.

  • The Plan aims at reduction of adverse consequences of drug abuse through a multi-pronged strategy.
  • The activities under the NAPDDR include awareness generation programmes in schools, colleges, Universities, workshop and provisioning of treatment facilities and capacity building of service providers.

MoU signed between AYUSH Ministry and WCD Ministry for controlling Malnutrition as a part of POSHAN Abhiyaan

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Women and Child Development in New Delhi for controlling Malnutrition as a part of POSHAN Abhiyaan.

  • The MoU will see some time-tested and scientifically proven Ayush-based solutions being adopted for controlling malnutrition in the country.

Tamil Nadu CM launches 3,401 mobile public distribution outlets in state

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy launched 3401 mobile public distribution outlets in the state.

  • The ‘Amma Mobile Ration Shops’ as they are called mainly serve families in remote, hilly and far-flung areas.
  • For a full-fledged ration shop, a minimum number of eligible beneficiary families are made mandatory.
  • The Chief Minister also introduced fortified rice distribution through the public distribution system in Tiruchirapalli district on a pilot basis.

Nutrition park to be set up in Chandrasekharapuram, Namakkal

Steps are being taken up to set up a nutrition park in Chandrasekharapuram, Namakkal near Trichy said by State Social Welfare and Nutrition department Minister Dr V Saroja.

  • This is part of the National Nutrition Month programme being undertaken in Tamilnadu.

Kerala Agri varsity introduce Jeevani, a new health drink

Aimed at enhancing the immunity levels of people, the Department of Post-Harvest Technology, Kerala Agricultural University has introduced Jeevani, a health drink in the market.

  • The product has been formulated from horticultural crops with proven health benefits and immunity boosting properties such as aonia (Indian gooseberry), lemon, ginger, turmeric and black pepper.
  • Jeevani is 100 per cent natural and devoid of any preservatives, synthetic food additives or artificial colourants

Southern Railway’s Chennai Division launches Freight Seva app

The Chennai Division of Southern Railways (SR) has launched an in-house mobile application – Freight Seva – to serve customers better.

  • The app will be a one stop destination for information needs, and have requisite details for access by freight customers.
  • The app has a query module wherein customers can seek clarifications regarding goods/parcels dealt in Chennai Division.

HOCL, a PSU under Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers gets BIS certification for all its products

Hindustan Organic Chemicals Limited, HOCL, a PSU under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has been granted Bureau of Indian Standards, BIS certification for all its products.

  • All the products of the company are widely being accepted, especially in the Pharmaceutical industry where the highest product quality is called for.
  • HOCL is also an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified Organization

IIIT-Bhubaneswar students make first-of-its-kind ventilation device to ease mild breathing issues

IIIT Bhubaneswar students developed a new low-cost device ‘Swasner’ to aid COVID-19 patients.

  • They have designed a hyperbaric chamber, first of its kind ventilation device to ease breathing. ‘Swasner’, the device to let patients breathe more conveniently.
  • Shaped as a bubble enclosure for the head, the device works on the principle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy which is mainly used for treating diving-related illness and other medical complications.

Google Pay, Visa partner for card-based payments with tokenisation

Google Pay will enable safe and secure omni-channel experiences to help consumers use NFC capable Android devices/phones to make contactless payments at over 2.5 million Visa merchant locations, scan and pay at more than 1.5 million Bharat QR-enabled merchants and pay bills and recharges from within their Google Pay app using their card.

  • Through Tokenization, Android users can use their debit or credit card to make payments through a secure digital token attached to their phone without having to physically share their credit or debit card details.
  • The feature will also facilitate use of tap-to-pay feature on near-field communications (NFC)-enabled point of sale (PoS) terminals and online merchants.

Fed Cup to be re-named Billie Jean King Cup in her honour

The Fed Cup is all set to change its name to Billie Jean King Cup announced The International Tennis Federation.

  • Almost six decades after King helped the US to win the inagural Fed Cup, the tournament becomes the first tennis competition to be named after a woman.
  • Fed Cup was launched in 1963. It is a premier international team competition in women’s tennis.

Centre appoints 3 new secretaries

The Centre appointed new Secretaries for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the National Commission for Backward Classes, and the Department of Pharmaceuticals.

  • 1984 batch Kerala cadre Indian Administrative Services (IAS) Officer, Anand Kumar will be the new Secretary, National Commission for Backward Classes, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • S Aparna, the 1988 batch lAS officer from the Gujarat cadre will be the next Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
  • Apurva Chandra, 1988 batch lAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, will be the new Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Anil Dhasmana appointed as new chief of NTRO

Central government has appointed former Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Anil Dhasmana as the head of the country’s technical intelligence agency head. 

  • Dhasmana, a 1981 batch IPS officer, has been appointed as National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) for two years.
  • Dhasmana succeeds former Intelligence Bureau officer Satish Jha who demitted office.

Chef Vikas Khanna’s Next Book To Give Insights Into His ‘Feed India’ Initiative

Michelin Star chef Vikas Khanna announced his next book titled “Kitchens of Gratitude”.

  • In this book he will write about his Feed India initiative, one of the world’s largest food drives serving meals to the underprivileged amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, said by publishing house Penguin Random House India.
  • The book, “Kitchens of Gratitude”, will be released in 2021 under the ‘Ebury Press’ imprint.


OBITUARIES

Former Mumbai cricketer Sachin Deshmukh passes away

Former Mumbai cricketer Sachin Deshmukh has died from Coronavirus (COVID-19) at Vedanta Hospital in Thane. He was 52 years old.

  • Lt.Sachin Deshmukh was a brilliant cricketer. In his time, he won the Ranji Trophy for both Mumbai and Maharashtra.
  • Sachin Deshmukh created a unique record for scoring 7 centuries in 7 matches at the time.
  • He was a superintendent of Excise and Customs in Mumbai, which is now known as GST and Customs.

Assam Musician Bibhuranjan Choudhury passes away

Renowned music composer Bibhuranjan Choudhury died after a prolonged battle with cancer, coupled with other complications, his family said. He was 71.

  • Choudhury, who composed the music of Guwahati Doordarshan”s first serial ”Jibonor Batot”, retired as the superintendent of the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation.
  • He had composed music for numerous TV serials, stage plays and radio productions in a career spanning over several decades.

Winston Groom, Author of ‘Forrest Gump,’ passes away

Winston Groom, the writer whose novel “Forrest Gump” was made into a six-Oscar winning 1994 movie that became a soaring pop-cultural phenomenon, has died at age 77.

  • Groom served in the Army’s Fourth Infantry Division from 1965 to 1969, the university said. His service included a tour in Vietnam – one of the settings for “Forrest Gump.”
  • He wrote 16 books, fiction and nonfiction.

International Day of Peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September to educate and create public awareness among its people in matters and issues related to peace. This year, the day is extra special as it marks 75 years of the International Day of Peace.

  • The theme of the International Day of Peace 2020 is “Shaping Peace Together.”
