EChO Network launched to catalyze cross-disciplinary leadership in India

EChO Network, a national program to provide a template for cross-disciplinary leadership in India with the specific focus of increasing research, knowledge, and awareness of Indian ecology and the environment was launched in New Delhi.

  • The initiative has drawn in partners from Government, industry and academia, with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India steering the program under the guidance of Prof. Shannon Olsson, Director, EChO Network.

Central government to organize 100 ‘Hunar Haats’ in next five years

Government has decided to organize hundred Hunar Haat across the country in the next five years to provide market exposure and employment opportunities to artisans, craftsmen and traditional culinary experts.

  • Hunar Haat will be organized in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Dehradun, Patna, Indore and other places.

Indian Coast Guard conducts ‘Swachchh Samundra NW-2019’

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted a two-day regional level pollution response exercise named ‘Swachchh Samundra NW-2019’ at sea off Vadinar in Gulf of Kutch.

  • The exercise was conducted to validate and reinforce the response mechanism for oil pollution incidents and enable the Indian Coast Guard to fine-tune the actions required in such eventualities.

World’s first Global Refugee Forum held in Geneva, Switzerland

The first ever Global Refugee Forum held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event, which is held at Ministerial level, will be co-hosted with Switzerland and co-convened by Turkey, Germany, Ethiopia and Costa Rica.

  • The aim of the forum is to give impetus to efforts to achieve the compact’s objectives and translate international solidarity into concrete action.

Eight West African nations rename common currency to Eco

Eight West African countries have agreed to change the name of their common currency to Eco and severed their earlier currency CFA Franc’s links to former colonial ruler France.

  • The CFA Franc was initially pegged to the French franc and has been linked to the euro for about two decades. Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo currently use the currency.

Ashleigh Barty and Rafael Nadal were named International Tennis Federation’s (ITF) World Champions in singles for 2019.

  • Former world number one Andy Murray, who underwent hip surgery in January, was named ATP’s comeback player of the year

Maisnam Meiraba Luwang wins Bangladesh Junior International Badminton Series

India’s shuttler Maisnam Meiraba Luwang beat Ken Yong Ong to won the Men’s singles Bangladesh Junior International Badminton Series 2019 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Harinder Pal Singh wins men’s title in 3rd leg of HCL-SRFI India Tour

Indian squash player Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu clinched the men’s title after defeated Tomotaka Endo of Japan in the third leg of the HCL-SRFI India Tour Squash Tournament in Mumbai.

  • Hana Ramadan of Egypt beat England’s Lucy Turmelwon the women’s crown in the same event.

Abhinav Lohan wins Bengaluru Open Golf Championship

Abhinav Lohan lifted PGTI title securing a narrow one-shot triumph at the Bengaluru Open golf championship. It was Lohan’s first title on the TATA Steel PGTI and second win of the year

Mirabai Chanu bags Gold in 6th Qatar International Cup in Doha

Former world champion, weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the women’s 49kg category gold medal to open India’s account at the 6th Qatar International Cup in Doha.

  • Chanu bagged gold with an effort of 194kg in the Olympic qualifying event, with the points which will come in handy when the final rankings for Tokyo 2020 cut are done.

Cuba names Manuel Marrero Cruz as first prime minister

Manuel Marrero Cruz was named Cuba’s new prime minister, the first person to take up the post since it was abolished in 1976 when Fidel Castro became president.

  • Marrero, who has served as tourism minister for 16 years and is an architect by trade, helped boost Cuba’s economy by making tourism one of the engines of growth.


OBITUARIES

Writer Chandrakanth Karadalli passes away

Renowned children’s book writer and Rajyotsava award winner Chandrakanth Karadalli passed away in Bengaluru. He was 70.

  • He wrote around 35 books, 15 of which come under children’s literature. He won the Karnataka Rajyotsava award in 2019 and the Bala Sahitya Akademi award from the Union government. He had also bagged the State as well as national ‘Good Teacher’ award.

National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day is observed on 22 December every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan for his substantial contributions to the world of mathematics.

  • Ramanujan also discovered his own theorems and compiled as many as 3900 results independently.In his short life, Ramanujan had a wealth of ideas that have transformed and reshaped 20th century mathematics.
