Amid lockdown, Guj govt’s water conservation scheme begins
Amid the lockdown for the coronavirus outbreak, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani gave the green signal for the third edition of his government’s ‘Sujalam Sufalam Jal Sanchay Abhiyan’ , a conservation plan to deepen water bodies in the state before monsoon.

  • The scheme, which will continue till June 10, will see the deepening of lakes, check dams and rivers by removing silt, and it will be done with people’s participation as well as under MNREGA.

SVP Institute becomes first to carry out plasma research in view of Covid-19
Ahmedabad based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Science and Research became the first authorized study centre in the country to carry out plasma research under trial in view of Covid 19. The MoU was signed between ICMR and the institute in this regard

  • The institute has successfully identified the potential donors for the research and started collecting their plasma.
  • Meanwhile, the Institute has also successfully done the C Section delivery of 30 year old Covid 19 patient which is first such case in the state.

MHRD e-launches national program “VidyaDaan 2.0”
The Union Human Resource Development Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank e-launched VidyaDaan 2.0 program for inviting e-learning content contributions in New Delhi.

  • The programme has been launched due to the increasing requirement  for  e-learning content for students(both school and higher education) especially  in the  backdrop of situation arising out of Covid- 19 and also due to  the urgent need to integrate digital education with schooling to augment learning.

Kerala’s Pathanamthitta launches Tiranga vehicle for rapid screening of symptoms
The Administration of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala has launched a vehicle called ‘Tiranga’ (Total India Remote Analysis Nirogya Abhiyaan) for rapid screening of COVID-19 symptoms.

  • The vehicle is provided with thermal scanning, an infrared thermometer mounted on the bonnet, a two-way microphone system by which individuals inside and out of doors the vehicle can ask one another, a mobile camera which will click photos of their identity cards.
  • The vehicle has been painted with tricolour so that people would immediately recognise it as an initiative of the government and leave the health workers alone

Karnataka govt launches “Apthamitra” app and helpline number
Aimed at empowering people in its fight against coronavirus, the Karnataka government launched “Apthamitra” helpline with an exclusive toll free number and a mobile app, aimed at providing required medical advice and guidance for those in need.

  • The ‘Apthamitra’ helpline will work from 8 AM to 8 PM, with helpline Centers at six locations in Bengaluru (four centers), Mysore and Mangalore(Bantwal) with total of 300 seat capacity are being set up.


ARCI develops advanced tool “NanoBlitz 3D”
Scientists from International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI) an autonomous institute under the Department of Science &Technology,Govt. of India in collaboration with Nanomechanics Inc., Oak Ridge, USA have jointly developed an advanced tool called NanoBlitz 3D for mapping nano-mechanical properties of materials like multi-phase alloys, composites, and multi-layered coatings.

  • The tool NanoBlitz 3D has also been found to yield excellent results on a wide range of material systems, including glass-fibre-reinforced polymer composites, dual-phase steels, softwood and shale.
  •  It enables the performance of a large array, typically consisting of 1000s high-speed nano-indentation tests, wherein each indentation tests takes less than one second to measure hardness and elastic modulus of a givenmaterial.

IIIT-Delhi develops ‘WashKaro’ app to warn about COVID-19
Researchers at IIIT-Delhi have developed an app which warns people about a coronavirus containment zone nearby and helps them check whether a news item about the pandemic is genuine or fake.

  • The WashKaro app, developed by professor Ponnurangam Kumaraguru and Dr Tavpritesh Sethi of the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-Delhi) along with five students, is currently available for android platforms.


Bajaj Auto’s Rakesh Sharma takes over as IMMA President
The International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA) said it has appointed Bajaj Auto Executive Director (ED) Rakesh Sharma as its president.

  • Sharma succeeds Johannes Loman, Director of PT Astra International Tbk and Executive Vice President Director PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) Indonesia.
  • Sharma had been previously holding office as vice-president in IMMA, elected in May 2019.

PV Sindhu named ambassador for BWF’s ‘i am badminton’ campaign
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) named Indian shuttler PV Sindhu as one of the ambassadors for its ‘I am badminton’ awareness campaign.

  • The campaign provides a platform for which players are able to express their love and respect for badminton by advocating and committing to clean and honest play.
  • Besides Sindhu, other players included are Canada’s Michelle Li, the Chinese duo of Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong, England’s Jack Shephard, Germany’s Valeska Knoblauch, Hong Kong’s Chan Ho Yuen and Germany’s Marc Zwiebler who is in Athletes’ Commission Chair.


Midnight in Chernobyl’ author Adam Higginbotham wins William E. Colby Award, $5K prize
Adam Higginbotham’s “Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster” has won E. Colby Award and a $5,000 prize.

  • Higginbotham has received the William E. Colby Award, given for an outstanding book on military or intelligence history


Tom and Jerry, Popeye director Gene Deitch passes away at 95
Oscar-winning animator Gene Deitch, credited with directing episodes of world-famous cartoons Tom and Jerry and Popeye, passed away at the age of 95 in his apartment in Prague.

  • Eugene Merrill Deitch, was known for directing some of the most popular animator cartoons, including Popeye the Sailor Man, Munro, Tom Terrific and Nudnik.
  • Deitch’s won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1960 for his film Munro. He received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation in 2004

World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on April 23 each year. The day is celebrated by UNESCO and other related organisations across the world to honour authors, books worldwide, to promote the art of reading etc.

  • The World Book Capital 2020 is Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.
  • The slogan for world book and copyright day 2020 is “KL Baca ‘ “Caring Through Reading”.
