Govt launches project for development of villages along Ganga river

The centre’s ambitious ‘Ganga Gram’ Project, aimed at holistic development of villages situated along the bank of the holy river, was launched in New Delhi. As part of its clean Ganga mission – Namami Gange, the Ganga Gram project is an integrated approach for the holistic development of villages situated on the banks of the holy river with the active participation of villagers

Environment ministry launches pilot project for beach clean-up

Ministry of Environment and Forests has launched a pilot project named “Blue Flag” for beach cleanup and development. The objective of the project is to enhance standards of cleanliness and upkeep basic amenities at beaches.

  • Under the pilot programme, each of the coastal State/UT has identified a beach, to be funded through the ongoing Integrated Coastal Management Programme.

India is the 5th most vacation deprived country globally

According to a survey of Expedia Vacation Deprivation Report 2017, globally India has been ranked as the 5th most vacation deprived country due to heavy work schedule, with 60 percent respondents corroborating with the view.

  • South Korea stood at number one position with 82 percent, followed by France (66 percent), Malaysia (65 percent) and Hong Kong (64 percent).

Indian Coast Guard commissions sixth Samarth-class OPV, ICGS Sujay

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned its sixth and final 105M Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), ICGS Sujay during a ceremony in Goa, on Dec. 20.



INTERNATIONAL NEWS

UN Security Council imposes new sanctions on North Korea

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved tough new sanctions against North Korea in response to its latest launch of a ballistic missile that Pyongyang says is capable of reaching anywhere on the U.S. mainland.

  • The resolution adopted by the council includes sharply lower limits on North Korea’s refined oil imports, the return home of all North Koreans working overseas within 24 months, and a crackdown on ships smuggling banned items including coal and oil to and from the country.


BANKING & FINANCE

Banks, ‘select financial institutions’ lost Rs 16,789 cr in 2016-17

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) “Fraud Monitoring Reports” showed that the scheduled commercial banks including “select financial institutions” lost Rs 16,789 crore due to frauds in 2016-17.

India and Germany signs loan Agreement for Pare Hydroelectric Plant

A Loan agreement and a Guarantee agreement for providing additional funding of Euro 20 million was signed between India and Germany for the project ‘Pare Hydroelectric Plant’ under Indo-German Bilateral Development Cooperation.

SEBI hikes FPI investment limit for Govt debt

To boost inflows of foreign funds into Indian capital markets, regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) raised the investment limit for FPI in central government securities to over Rs 1.91 lakh crore from January 1, 2018.

  • Currently, investment limit for foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) is Rs 1,89,700 crore.

Amazon acquires home automation startup Blink

In a bid to ramp up its connected home line-up, online giant Amazon has acquired a startup named Blink that builds wireless home monitoring systems, including connected Wi-Fi home security cameras.

UK tops Forbes’ list of best countries for business in 2018

The United Kingdom has topped Forbes’ rankings of best countries in the world for business in 2018 for the first time, up from fifth last year. The list ranks 153 countries on 15 factors including property rights, innovation, taxes and red tape. The UK is followed by New Zealand and the Netherlands, while India was ranked 62nd on the list.

Shooting Excluded from 2022 Commonwealth Games

Shooting has been excluded from the events list, for the 2022 edition, and instead a mixed-gender Twenty20 cricket event for the games.

  • The host nation can pick upto seven such sports. Hosts Birmingham has picked judo, table tennis, wrestling, gymnastics, diving, cycling and 3v3 basketball.

Mumbai, Gurugram girls win Mrs India contest

Mayanka Patel from Mumbai and Poonam Gaur from Gurugram were crowned Mrs India-Pride of Nation in two different categories at the grand finale.

  • Mayanka was announced winner in Group A category that had participation of girls in the age bracket of 21 years to 34 years while Group B (34-45 years) saw Poonam taking the crown at the event.

Zee Cine Awards 2018

Zee Cine Awards 2018 took place recently, marking the presence of almost all the big stars from Bollywood. The winner’s list includes Varun Dhawan, Sridevi, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, and Golmaal Again team grabbing the highest recognition.

BOOK LAUNCH

Book on Gauri Lankesh’s writings launched

A book containing selected writings by late journalist Gauri Lankesh was launched three months after she was gunned down outside her home in Bengaluru by unidentified men. The book, The Way I See It — a Gauri Lankesh Reader, has been edited by writer and sociologist Chandan Gowda.
