Assam govt signs MoU with SBI to provide housing, educational loan at subsidised interest rates

To provide housing loan and educational loan at subsidised interest rates to the employees of the state government, a MoU was signed on between the Assam government and State Bank of India

  • The MoU has been signed for providing loans for Housing Higher Education Loan to the State Government Employees at very nominal rate of interest.
  • The government will provide interest subsidy at the rate of 3.50% for housing loan and at suitable rate to make education loan at 4%.

Cabinet approves proposal for Amendments to the NABARD Act 1981

The Amendments, include provisions that enable Central Government to increase the authorized capital of NABARD from Rs 5000 crore to Rs 30000 crore and to increase it beyond Rs 30000 crore in consultation with RBI, as deemed necessary from time to time.

  • Also includes Transfer of 0.4 per cent. equity of RBI in NABARD amounting to Rs. 20 crores to the Government of India.

Cabinet approves amendment to Right to Education Act

The Union Cabinet has approved amendment to the Right to Education Act to ensure that all teachers acquire minimum educational qualifications.

  • It also extends the period for untrained teachers to acquire stipulated qualifications by four years, that is, up to March 31, 2019.

Cabinet approves Indo-US MoU on partnership for Cyber Security

The Union Cabinet has approved the Indo-US MoU that intends to promote closer co-operation and exchange of information pertaining to the Cyber Security in accordance with the relevant laws, rules and regulations and on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit.

  • The MoU was signed between the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-ln) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the US Homeland Security Department on cooperation in the field of Cyber Security

India ranks 87th on energy architecture performance: WEF

India has marginally improved its position to 87th place on a global energy architecture performance index, but ranks among the worst for pollution.

  • Switzerland topped the annual list released by Geneva- based World Economic Forum (WEF) and was followed by Norway, Sweden, Denmark and France in the top five. India’s rank improved three places from 90th last year.

India to conduct survey for new rail line with Bangladesh

New Delhi will carry out a survey to lay one more new railway line between India and Bangladesh to access the Chittagong international sea port and ease connectivity with the landlocked northeast region

  • Of the 125-km line, five km falls in India and the rest in Bangladesh. The proposed railway line via (Bangladesh’s) Feni town aims to access the Chittagong international sea port for the benefit of the mountainous northeast India.

Google, MeitY launch initiatives to proliferate digital awareness

In line with the government’s vision to proliferate the digital growth and empower citizens digitally, Google and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have announced ‘Digital Payment Security alliance’ initiative that aims to create community awareness on safe and secure digital practices.

  • Google, in collaboration with the MeitY also announced “Digital Unlocked” initiative that aims to train one lakh artisans per year across India and enable them to tap into newer markets through improved visibility of their products on internet.

Open defecation-free Goa by Gandhi Jayanti 2019

Goa Governor Mridula Sinha has announced that by October 2, 2019, when the country celebrates Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, Goa may well see a complete end to open defecation.

‘Swasth Uttar Purva’ initiative to boost healthcare in NE

Aiming to improve public health efforts in the North Eastern region of India, the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) in collaboration with the Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has  launched “Swasth Uttar Purva: Healthy North East” initiative.

  • The initiative will help catalyse trained workforce by imparting appropriate training in delivering healthcare.
  • The first phase will be implemented in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram.

Airtel to acquire Tikona’s 4G business for Rs 1,600 crore

Bharti Airtel has announced an agreement with Tikona Digital Networks to acquire the latter’s 4G business, including the Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum and 350 sites, in five telecom circles for around Rs 1,600 crore.

Bangladesh to join India’s South Asia Satellite initiative

Bangladesh has signed an agreement with India to formally join New Delhi’s ‘South Asia Satellite’ initiative, through which the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will launch a communication satellite for serving the South Asia region.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier announced the launching of the satellite during the 2014 SAARC Summit in Kathmandu as a “gift to India’s neighbours”.
  • This satellite is a reflection of India’s commitment to the development of the South Asian region and an expression to share its expertise and technology for the benefit of the region.

China’s economy ranked strongest: Report

China’s economy has been ranked the top performing in terms of overall strength and vitality in The Asia Competitiveness Annual Report 2017 released at the Boao Forum for Asia

French Mathematician Yves Meyer Wins Abel Prize for ‘Wavelet Theory’

French mathematician Yves Meyer known for his pioneering work on a theory used for applications ranging from image compression to the detection of gravitational waves from the merging of black holes has earned one of the world’s top prizes in mathematics.

  • Meyer was honored largely “for his pivotal role in the development of the mathematical theory of wavelets”.

ISSF World Cup: Ankur Mittal bags gold in men’s double trap

Indian shooter Ankur Mittal clinched his first World Cup gold medal by defeating Australian James Willet in the finals of the men’s double trap event at the at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Acapulco, Mexico
