NATIONAL NEWS

Cabinet approves Minimum Support prices for copra for 2023
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for copra for 2023 season.

  • The MSP for Fair Average Quality of milling copra has been fixed at Rs. 10860/- per quintal and for ball copra at Rs. 11750/- per quintal for 2023 season. This is an increase of Rs. 270/- per quintal for milling copra and Rs. 750/- per quintal for ball copra over the previous season. This would ensure a margin of 51.82 percent for milling copra and 64.26 percent for ball copra over the all India weighted average cost of production.
  • The announced MSP of copra for 2023 season is in line with the principle of fixing the MSP at a level of at least 1.5 times all India weighted average cost of production as announced by the Government in the Budget 2018-19.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India, Japan to conduct first-ever air combat exercise – Veer Guardian 23
Indian Air Force (IAF) and Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) are set to hold their maiden bilateral air exercise, Veer Guardian 23, from January 16 to 26 at Hyakuri air base and Iruma air base in Japan.

  • To promote mutual understanding and strengthen defence cooperation between the Air Forces and enhance JASDF’s tactical skills,” the JASDF said on the aim of the exercise.

Spain passes new transgender bill, allows anyone above 16 to change legal gender
Spain’s lower house of parliament has passed a law allowing people over the age of 16 to change their legally registered gender without any medical supervision, putting the country on track to become one of the first few to allow transgender people to change their status with a simple declaration.

  • The bill was approved by 188 legislators, with 150 voting against it, and will now move to the Senate. If it is left unchanged, as expected, it will become law within weeks.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

IMF projects 6.8% growth in current fiscal for India
Projecting a growth rate of 6.8 per cent and 6.1 per cent in the current and the next fiscal respectively, the International Monetary Fund said that India is navigating a “very difficult” external environment.

  • In her virtual conversation with reporters, Choueiri Nada, IMF’s India Mission Chief, reaffirmed that India continues to be the lone bright spot in an otherwise bleak picture of the world economy.


APPOINTMENTS

Centre appoints former SC Judge Hemant Gupta as head of New Delhi International Arbitration Centre
The Centre has appointed Justice Hemant Gupta, who retired recently as a judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chairperson of the New Delhi International Arbitration Centre (NDIAC).

  • Along with Justice Gupta, Ganesh Chandru and Anant Vijay Palli have been appointed as part-time members of the NDIAC.
  • The aim of the NDIAC is to conduct arbitration, mediation, and conciliation proceedings.

Beth Mead wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022
Beth Mead has been awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 as she was the player of the tournament and top scorer at Euro 2022.

  • Beth Mead defeated Germany in the finals at Wembley to win England’s first major women’s football trophy. The 27-year-old competed against Ben Stokes and Ronnie O’Sullivan for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2022 award.

NHPC wins ‘Best Globally Competitive Power Company of India – Hydropower and Renewable Energy Sector’ at PRAKASHmay ‘15th Enertia Awards 2022’
NHPC Limited has been awarded as Winner of ‘Best Globally Competitive Power Company of India – Hydropower and Renewable Energy Sector’ at PRAKASHmay ‘15th Enertia Awards 2022’. Shri U.S. Sahi, Executive Director (EMS/CC/CSR), NHPC received the award on behalf of NHPC at a glittering function held at New Delhi Institute of Management, New Delhi.

  • The Award has been conferred to NHPC in recognition of its leadership in the hydropower sector with a gross asset class renewable energy capacity of more than 7000 MW.
  • The award also recognizes that NHPC has more than 5000 MW of projects under construction and an ambitious 7000 MW plus plan for Solar capacity addition.

Indian scientist Prof. Thalappil Pradeep receives VinFuture special prize 2022
Indian scientist, Prof. Thalappil Pradeep, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras received VinFuture special prize in Hanoi for innovation of a low-cost filtration system to remove arsenic and other heavy metals from groundwater.

  • Thalappil has been awarded the ‘Special Prize dedicated to Innovators from Developing Countries’ for his development of a low-cost filtration system to remove arsenic and other heavy metals from groundwater.

UIDAI Headquarter Building wins top Green Building Award
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Headquarter in New Delhi has won the prestigious GRIHA Exemplary Performance Award 2022, a top national level Green Building Award.

  • GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) is a national rating system for green buildings in India. UIDAI HQ has been declared a winner among the existing highest rated building category.
  • UIDAI believes and promotes the idea of recycle and reuse to reduce carbon footprint. It has been harnessing solar power to meet a portion of its energy consumption. It is recycling and reusing water and has been adhering to sustainable waste management practices.

The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2021-22 jointly won by Sudeep Sen and Shobhana Kumar
The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2021-22 has been jointly won by Sudeep Sen for his genre and formbender Anthropocene: Climate Change, Contagion, Consolation (Pippa Rann Books & Media, 2021) and Shobhana Kumar for her haibun collection A Sky Full of Bucket Lists (Red River, 2021).

  • The winners, awarded $10,000 and a Rabindranath Tagore statuette, were picked from a shortlist of 11 at India International Centre, with the Tagore Prize for social achievement going to Sanjoy K Roy, producer of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
